After building my precision grendel, I wanted something to run wolf steel ammo almost exclusively. I already have a "carbine" lower that I use for my 5.56 that got me into ARs, so I just built an upper.
I tried to keep it as cheap as possible, Still a poor college student! But I'll free float it in the future and I'm considering cutting her down to 10.5" (If anyone has 10.5" Velocities, I would love to take a gander. I haven't been able to find them here)

1:9 carbine length chromemoly

I got her sighted in, and then put one round dead center of the head on some steel at 100 yards, but then I hand the rifle over to my date and any sense of scientific accuracy testing was done hahaha. It was worth the date though. Next time I take her out I'll try to get some rounds on paper for y'all.
All in all I love the rifle. I think I'll name her Janice!

This is from LRRPF52 in another thread. It is for 11.5" but should give you an idea about what to expect for a 10.5", slightly less than this.
11.5" with a 129gr ABLR gives you:
100yds 2066fps 1223ft-lbs
200yds 1928fps 1065ft-lbs
300yds 1796fps 924ft-lbs
400yds 1671fps 800ft-lbs

Awesome! I've thought about doing this, too! With the price of the wolf stuff it's a great idea if you have someplace to shoot the steel stuff. Did it do any notable damage on the 100yrd steel compared to standard rounds?

None at all, actually. Just noticeable coloration from the impact like shooting any other FMJs. After I spray painted the target, it looked good as new again. I would definitely recommend building one. I just bought 500 rounds at 26 cents a piece from sgammo.com. I can shoot a lot more at those prices!

I bought this double star barrel on the cheap. 140 dollars shipped. It was a sale at the beginning of the summer. Seems to be quality. One day, I'll put some quality ammo through it to test accuracy, but I had some of those wolf rounds keyhole as I was sighting in. I'm excited to take her out again here in the next few weeks. I'll post some groups for sure.
Also I know Anderson just started making grendel barrels. May be worth looking into. I'm running their bolt in Janice and it's .136. So I suspect it's a SAAMI barrel. May be worth a gander.

My Wolf blaster with a $195 AA barrel. Built for 3 gun, carbine courses, general blasting and home defense. Wasn't expecting too much, but it gets about 1.5-2.5MOA with the Wolf. Equal to or better than what all my 5.56 barrels ever did with M193, 855, or Wolf .223.

Went shooting with friends this weekend and brought my new DSLR. I can work on my photography, but this is by far the best pic of Janice I have. Thought I'd update since it's the Photo Gallery.
I tried my hand for the first time and painted the receivers with Brownell's Alumahyde II Coyote. I love the way it turned out personally. I dig the slight contrast with the Magpul FDE. I'm debating painting the scope as well. Let me know your thoughts!

Ok, since you asked
and I want to try and steer some discussion toward painting a scope. First off all I Really like what you did with that rifle (I'm not a fan of camo) Imo, it is hard to pull off a two tone paint scheme on an ar without it looking forced and/or unfinished. Very good use of color there.
Imo the mount and optic need to be painted to finish the job, but what color and what would be the drawbacks to painting a scope? Would it void the warranty, gum up an adjustment etc? Talk me into it or out of it.
I am going to paint at least one of mine someday. I hope I can pull it off as well as you did.

I've been happy with accuracy so far, but have yet to do serious paper accuracy tests. TBH I just hate getting in the snow when it's so cold right now haha. So I've just shot steel, and I'm taking 19 credits on the university right now, so the times I go to shoot have been fewer and farther between unfortunately...

That sounds like quite the compliment! I appreciate it as well as the feedback.
I have been thinking about painting the scope the same color as the receivers, maybe leaving the mount black. I baked the receivers after I painted them and asked Primary Arms if I could do the same to the scopes. They said no to the "heat treatment," but air dry should be fine. Taping it off shouldn't be too bad either. I think I'd stuff the ends with paper towels and then tape it off. I didn't ask about the warranty for PA.
I did ask SWFA since I have one of their 10x42SS scopes and they said it wouldn't void the warranty. It presents the problem you had mentioned with target turrets (the primary arms 1-6x just has turret covers that I leave there). I think I would crank the turrets down and then taping off the appropriate markings and not worry much more about it. I wouldn't hesitate to do it though!

I've two cases of the Wolf for the zombie apocalypse, but I mostly shoot the factory AMax 123s. $1 a pull does get pricey however. I've heard on another forum that the Wolf ammo will eventually damage the barrel. Does anyone have an opinion on that? I'd like to shoot more of it if it's not going to hurt my rifle.
