Hey fellas I just recently had a 6.5 grendel built ended up having to rent a 6.5 sammi reamer after my smith got it all together and head spaced the throat is so shallow that it won't even chamber a factory 123gr amax round. After checking my oal with my gauge and the bullet on the lands it measures 2.21" far to short. So needing to find a 6.5 throat reamer to rent or buy any help would be appreciated thanks.

Who made that reamer your gunsmith used, because a SAAMI reamer will not do that unless it's out of spec, or worn ragged.

Luke, I'm to get a SAAMI spec reamer made soon. I can rent it , on the cheap- you will need a more competent smith tho.
.300 chamber okay with you? AR style- AA designed for forgiveness In the chamber if , dirty , etc.

The reamer was from reamerrentals.com and made by ptg I let them know about it today and they sent me a throat reamer at no cost so I'm good to go. The way they talked they've had this happen before she was quick to say she was gonna ship it straight to ptg. My smith actually looked at it a little closer before he shipped it back today and apologized for the issue said he should have caught it himself before hand. He's a very compatent smith it was just a simple overlooked mistake and of course there's nothing he could've done about the reamer outside of the throat it chambered it very nicely. But my smith ask me to seat a bullet to the oal length I'd like and he would thoat it to those specs so I'm kinda glad it worked out like it did. This way I'll have more of a custom chamber for sure. I seated the 123gr Amax to 2.38" oal this should give me plenty of room for a bit more powder and help with pressures as well. I appreciate the offer sneaky one I really do but looks like things should work out just fine. A good heads up though for anyone that rents a reamer to check it out good before hand everyone makes simple mistakes every now and again easily done.

I'd like to get your guys opinion of throating my grendel to 2.38" oal of a 123gr amax to long or should this be as good as I'm thinking for my rig. As far as functioning in my mag no worries there if I can't get the mag modified that much it won't bother me any I can always load them shorter if needed.

I think there has been some discussion as to whether the PTG reamer is actually a SAAMI reamer. Seems they were the one's that made the reamer for the Liberty barrels that were short throated IIRC. I apologize in advance if I am wrong.
If you want a SAAMI reamer Manson Reamers seem to be the Go To folks.

Be very careful poking that throat reamer in there, they remove metal very fast. I,d have to agree its best to have the throat cut with the chamber.

2.38" for the 123gr AMAX is way short. I can load that to 2.275" if I want to, but there is no reason for it. 2.260" working COL should be what your chamber allows if it's SAAMI.
The 123gr AMAX is more on the pointy side of ogives, so if it is constrained to that short of a COL, you're screwed with any of the tangent ogive bullets.
Tell your smith to order from Manson in the future when other customers ask for 6.5 Grendel, and you will get a correct reamer. For me personally, no matter what caliber I'm discussing with a smith, the moment he mentioned PTG, it's a deal-breaker for me. I have yet to see a consistent .308 or .223 chamber from them, even if you pay for the "match versions" with specific throat lengths. You will often get the exact opposite of what you ordered, and this complaint is very common among competitive shooters and their smiths.
PTG is fast and cheap. You know how the saying goes about picking one of 3.
I was discussing a .338 Federal build with a smith a few years ago. He insisted on using a PTG reamer since they were so easy to get. I walked away and never talked about it again with him, and that shop plus the parts suppliers lost probably $2000 on a job that would have happened with a Manson reamer.

The reamer wasn't my smith's idea this was my responsibility I only told him what I was wanting after taking him my new action and blank and told him I'd have the reamer sent to him from 4-D products. Not sure what they use for sure but after waiting 3weeks on a reamer that was supposed to be there 3 days after I'd left the smith's that day I cancelled let my smith know and he actually recommended I use White Rock so I called them but they didn't have one in 6.5 grendel. So at this point to be honest the only other place I knew of was reamer rentals and had no idea they even used ptg myself I had read multiple times that there specs are off but they shipped it same day and it arrived 2 days later all seemed right with the world finally compared to dealing with 4-D but as we know now it wasn't. It is what it is the chamber looks nice and is in spec outside of the throat.

JGS Tools have saami reamers too, I'm not the greatest when looking at drawings. But from my eyes by looking at the drawing it's Saami.

Did yoy mean 2.38" or 2.238" ?. The first will give an uncomfortably long jump when seating to the SAAMI maximum length of 2.26". As LRRPF52 said, 2.238" is still too short to comfortably accept factory ammo.

I recently went through this after buying a chambered barrel from Krieger. The chamber had zero freebore and a 123 gr scenar was jammed .040 into the lands at an OAL of 2.260. Krieger referred me to JGS who made their reamer and JGS sent me a print of their SAAMI spec reamer. I compared the JGS print against the SAAMI minimum chamber drawing and they were identical. The chamber came out fine and the barrel shoots great.
Be careful using the term SAAMI spec. SAAMI defines the minimum dimensions. The minimum dimensions may not be the right dimensions for your application.
