I posted that I am new here and new to 6.5 grendel. I have read allot of the posts in this forum about suppresors etc. Let me start by telling you the purpose of this build. Im married. My wife complains that my bolt actions kick to hard, are to heavy, and to loud. So I decided to build my first AR for her. Of course im building it to where I will enjoy it. With that said, AR being semi auto will not kick as hard as my bolt actions, suppressors will make it quieter, and SBR will make it lighter. These are all the things I am telling her and using as an excuse to make the purchases.
Now why did I pick 6.5 grendel? Cause in my opinion which this may upset some of you, a 556 is not a round I would personally hunt deer with and some of the larger rounds will kick harder. This weapon is primarly going to be used for hunting.
So like I said before, I have read allot of the posts about suppressors and it seems everyone likes the Thunderbeast. So I went on their website and did some reading and then called them to ask about the minimum barrel length requirements. Unfortunately according to them their cans cannot go on a 10.5 inch barrel which is what ive been leaning towards. Your thoughts on barrel lengths are appreciated here. So which cans would you guys now recomend for a 10.5" barrel? Understand that budget is not unlimited. Ive heard of steel cans that weight a little more for as little as $250 all the way up to big $$.

Edit: adding question. Would a can made specifically for 6.5g suppress more then a 308 can on a 6.5g?

Because of the pressure and heat at the muzzle of such a short barrel, you're going to want a strong can meant for SBR use, or you can build your own and change out baffles accordingly.
If this is for hunting, I'm not sure what kind of volume you will be shooting, but a modest shooting schedule isn't too bad on decent cans.
Once you start blasting away, your first baffle will really take a beating. Inconel does really well in this regard.

A buddy I hunted with 2 weeks ago was using a 300 blkout and told me his can was super heavy but only $250. I didnt ask him at the time what kind it was. I unfortunately do not shoot often. My 270 that I hunt with has about 50 rounds through it in 4 years. I go to the range at the beginning of season. Fire 2 rounds at 200 yards to make sure its still centered and then I only shoot it at animals. So volume wont be really high. My shotgun on the other hand has been shot a ton.
When you talk about building my own can and changing out baffles. Thats like speaking a foreign language to me as this will be my first suppressor.

What area of the country will you be hunting? Personally I wouldn't go shooter than 11.5". I just sold my sdn-6 and I'm currently in the market for the new Surefire Socom Mini to go on my Grendels and 5.56s.
Thunderbeast do make awesome cans! Unfortunately the margin for error in design is very low on titanium cans compared to steel cans. Hence, why TB is more conservative.
Also I do recommend a heavy buffer and a stock with at least the option of a thicker rubber pad (magpul, etc) to make shooting it more enjoyable for the wife.
5.56 is a great round for even hunting if you remain within the limitations of the round.

I use the silencerco specwar 762 on my 6.5 grendel.
Very rugged and, to my ears, the quietest can out there.
Now, I don't shoot subs, but even supers are very quiet.

Since we know the gun is going to have a certain overall length that will be a combination of:
* Barrel length
* Suppressor length
* Stock length
I personally think 12.5" with a short can is another way to go. You also get more velocity with the 12.5". That's what I'm looking at anyway. With a 5" can, we're looking at the same overall length as a 10.5" with a 7" can, but the 12.5" will be much lighter.

Razor or Surge by Rugged Suppressors Probably will work, email them to see. If not then Dead Air Sandman S will definitely work. Since they don't have minimum barrel length restrictions.
The Surge is nice since you can have a can that's either 7.5" or 9", but the Razor is only 6.4"

I have a 12.5" and love it. It just balances very nice and feels great. Even with my heavy 24oz cyclone on the end it feels good. I bought a Tbac ultra 7 for it and just waiting for the stamp to come to the dealer, it was approved on the 3rd. With a 12" barrel and a light can you won't be disappointed.

Ive looked up allot of the suppressors recommended and unfortunately most of them are just a bit out of my price range. I did find a Huntington Arms Kestrel can on sale for $549. Not sure if thats a good deal or not. It is heavy at 25 oz and long at 8.5 inches but does anyone have any experience with this can?

I wanted to be in the $600 range pre tax. I've honestly had such a hard time finding compatible suppressors and short barrels that I just decided to go with a 16" barrel. Alexander arms had one for sale on their site but it's threaded 9/16-24 which requires a $90 adapter so does anyone have any other barrel recommendations?

As a suppressor maker I can tell you that you get what you pay for. The cheap cans are cheap for a reason and with the short barrel you're talking about you are asking for trouble. As you cut the barrel down you are dumping higher and higher pressure into the can as well has more heat. Heat is the enemy and pressure is the killer. As you raise the temp of the metal the strength drops. With the shorter barrel your muzzle pressure is higher. This can be a big problem.
Another problem with short barrels is bullet yaw. The shorter barrels don't stabilize the bullet as well because for the same twist rate you're going to get less velocity. All bullets yaw at least a little when they clear the muzzle and they can take a bit to true up. As your barrel gets shorter the amount of yaw increases and so does the time it takes to straighten out. This can cause baffle strikes and that is one of the most common problems found with suppressing short barrels in rifles.
I've done a few repairs on customer cans and the common element in the damaged cans is short barrels. Normally its a ding in the last baffle and endcap but I've seen some where it looks like the bullet tumbled from the muzzle out. As long as the tube is not damaged the cans can be fixed but the cost can be high. I've seen 2 cans that were popped by customers who thought rapid fire with a 500 dollar can was cool. Normally the parts blown off the can go sideways but its possible for them to come back toward the shooter or the line as well so think about liability when you think about short barrels. If you want to go short you need to buy a can where the manufacturer has said it will handle it. Its a good idea to ask as well. Some will and some won't do well so ask.....
