Fur Friendly Grendel Load - 1750Shooter - 02-16-2016

Anybody have a fur-friendly load for their Grendel? I'm currently using the Prazi 120gr HP & under 300yds it cuts them almost in half! I'm hoping for something using the Nosler 100gr bullet & 8208. Thanks for any input.

There are both loads and a a substantial chapter describing different weights and designs of bullets along with recommendations for hunting. One of the paragraphs deals directly with your question.

Personally when I think fur friendly, I think 17 cal - 25 or 30 grain HP from a 17 HH, 17 FB or 17 REM very small hole in and no exit. Only options for a 6.5 Grendel that come to mind that may be remotely fur friendly in my way of thinking would be a full metal jacket or a 100 grain Barnes TTSX or another all copper option. Larger entrance wound and large or larger exit wound.

Norma makes a 120 FMJ if you can find them and PPU has 110gr FMJ load. There is also the Wolf FMj load. One of them should work. I can't remember who it was on here but they were using 95gr VMAX and reported no exit wounds when shooting coyotes with it.

Like to know more about this 95 gr V-max load? If it works great! Personally I will have to see it to believe it. As a 243 65 V-max load is very hit and miss as exits are often very messy. Just would like to know more details i suppose.

Hmmmmm, I think I need to water test my 85 grain Sierra Varmints, 90 grain TNT and compare them to the 95 grain V-Max. The 95 grain V-Max stopped in the 3 gallon jug of water. Most pistol JHP defense loads I've tested over the years stop in the 3 rd jug of water.

That may not be all that surprising since the bullets are expanding as intended. When that happens, bullet weight Has the most influence on depth and hole size.

I don't remember the exact post, I believe it is in the hunting section. A member posted about shooting Coyotes with it and I was imagining huge exit wounds or 2 piece dogs and I asked about the exit wounds. The OP responded that he did not have exit wounds with the load he was using.

Sneaky, to answer your question, any exit hole much bigger than a quarter becomes hard to blend the fur after sewing it up. I use 2#- 4# fishing line depending on the animal.

The Wolf FMJ steel case ammo comes to mind. You could pull some bullets and re-weigh the charges to ensure better accuracy if that was a concern.

Lapua has a pelt-harvesting bullet, the 100gr FMJ.
