...... building the prototype of a new piston grendel carbine. Monolithic upper, knurled barrel profile, Satern hard steel barrel, AAC 51 tooth blackout flash hider. Need a 65 round drum mag for this if it works out
Spurred from the success with the piston DMR I am getting into this to see how well it runs.
19.11 hours though and still need to finish repairing the toilet in the shop. Broke loose from its moorings early this morning. I am afraid to ask how.

I think he used the monolithic, IIRC
I also know where he can get a drum mag, I just need to finish it up.
Chris was good enough to volunteer one of his for non destructive prototyping and testing.

I was set on avoiding the piston craze, but since Ares finally came through with my Shrike I guess I already own one piston AR now. I hope your project turns out really well. Shop latrine is firmly reinstalled. All new fittings and two 6" rawl bolts should hold the little bugger. Finished just before midnight on Friday and then got the gun finished up.
Ran it Saturday and everything works well except the feed ramps. I forgot to check for sharp edges and of course it has those because I forgot. Annoying but hardly catastrophic. Wind precluded any proper accuracy tests but it seems to shine at least to 300. I will dovetail the testing in with the piston DMR's we built. Recoils is not as soft as the longer action systems but is very linear. I am also not yet fully convinced with these actions but they do seem to shine.
One thing we have found is that for the extremely accurate rifles the piston must be cleaned per the barrel to maintian accuracy. Heavy carbon build ups from days of firing if allowed to harden and not removed do seem to open groups.

That makes sense, the FAL and other piston rifles also need to be cleaned if accuracy is expected.
I do not know where anyone got the idea that pistons don't need cleaning.
Maybe the bolt does not get as dirty, but something else does get dirty and need cleaning.
The only plus I can see is that the bolt does not get as hot, however there is a tradeoff in something else moving throwing accuracy off even if my a small amount.

Once again proving that in firearms design there is no free lunch, no perfect rifle. There are only compromises, pick which combination of compromises you like most!

That is an AA monolithic upper, one piece, machined to be rigid.

Very nice looking! Have you found any problems with accuracy? I know you said it was good to 300 but is that on a level with a DI action or is it good considering it is a piston?

With only limited testing it would not be correct to classify the accuracy of this particular weapon. We have a 20" Piston operated DMR style gun and with both Satern and Begara barrels they run as accurate as anything you can build with a gas tube. I was extremely supprised to see how well the gun shot as I expected to see a degredation due to the off axis forces and the moving mass.
To date this short gun has shown itself to be exceptional but with only limited ranges evaluated and only with 123 Scenar ammunition this is not anything more than an indication of potential.
The drum magazine is something I started at SHOT. I found that the head design guy at the company was someone I knew previously and we got to chatting. Not a done deal yet but something we are plating with.
