What is your preferred Home Defense caliber, suppressed SBR or Bullpup - LRRPF52 - 01-05-2014 The question was brought up earlier, "If I have a barrel under 16" in length in my residence, and I also have other AR15 parts that could theoretically be assembled into a SBR, does the gun gestapo have a legal case against me?" An easy way of not having to worry about that, which also showcases the silliness of the ATF and 1934 NFA, you can simply purchase this device: ![]() https://www.sigsauer.com/SigStore/sb15-pistol-stabilizing-brace-552.aspx It even comes with a silly ATF compliance letter: https://www.sigsauer.com/upFiles/ATF-Compliant-Letter.pdf What is your preferred Home Defense caliber, suppressed SBR or Bullpup - KentuckyBuddha - 01-05-2014 stanc Wrote:I have to say, though, that I am shocked, amazed, and astounded that not one single person has opted for 6.5 Grendel. What you are missing is that the poster also said he did not have a pistol lower. So he couldn't even make use of the device you showcase. He had lowers with buttstocks and greater than 16" barrels, and was contemplating buying a shorter than 16" barrel/upper only. Every judge in the country would convict in that case. BTW, this in no way means I agree with the 1934 NFA. In fact, the only case I know of that challenged it in court was the SBS case that was rigged. Any volunteers to challenge it? What is your preferred Home Defense caliber, suppressed SBR or Bullpup - LRRPF52 - 01-05-2014 Because there is more projectile weight, there is more chance of complete perforation with anything that is high-power rifle, hence the beauty of 5.56 for CQB. Shoot a 45gr or 50gr varmint load in a 5.56 in the house from a gun with a polished and blended set of feed ramps, and you're golden as to tissue destruction with no over-penetration. With Level III-A penetration to boot! But I agree with Stanc...I'm surprised no one has selected the Grendel. 95 grain V-Max (sd = .195) versus 55 grain V-Max (sd = .157). What is the mv from 10.5" Grendel barrel with 95 grain V-Max? I didn't do any polishing and blending but I charged a magazine with 55 grain Varmint X rounds. Is there a danger that smaller pills won't feed well? Is there a danger that smaller pills won't feed well? Hollow point meplats can sometimes hang up on certain feed ramp configurations, because this is one area where you will rarely see a good mate-up with an M4 upper and M4 feed ramps. They are supposed to work together, and usually do with pointed pills, but hollow points can and sometimes do get jammed into the seam if the ramps are not blended and polished. What is your preferred Home Defense caliber, suppressed SBR or Bullpup - LRRPF52 - 01-05-2014 AR15 pistols are supposed to be marked as such, and if you buy one, it will say "Pistol" on it. They are transferred as pistols on the 4473. It's a stupid, pointless "law", that has zero effect on crime, while making things more difficult for good, upstanding citizens, not that I would ever label the unwashed masses of the horde with such a name. How would I go about getting those registered as a pistol lower. They don't have to be "registered" as a pistol. I think that was a trend several years ago, but there has since been an ATF "ruling" about pistols to rifles, rifles to pistols. As LRRPF52 alluded, you could have the majority of the components to make pistol lower and have the shorter barrel. Keep them together. Really just need the lower and the pistol receiver extension. http://www.atf.gov/files/regulations-rulings/rulings/atf-rulings/atf-ruling-2011-4.pdf Quote: Bjorn - I'm surprised no one has selected the Grendel. I've never seen one marked as "pistol". I bought one that was "registered" as a pistol a few years ago when there was a panic over ATF buffoonery. That fad has since faded. More often than not, the stupid ATF rulings just cause more confusion: Quote:Held further, a firearm, as defined by 26 U.S.C. 5845(a)(3) and (a)(4), is not made when parts in a kit that were originally designed to be configured as both a pistol and a rifle are assembled or re-assembled in a configuration not regulated under the NFA (e.g., as a pistol, or a rifle with a barrel of 16 inches or more in length). Does this mean that the pistol and rifle parts must be in a kit?...or does it mean that a firearm that can be readily configured as a pistol or a rifle (e.g. AR-15) can go back and forth? Quote:Held further, a firearm, as defined by 26 U.S.C. 5845(a)(3) and (a)(4), is not made when a pistol is attached to a part or parts designed to convert the pistol into a rifle with a barrel of 16 inches or more in length, and the parts are later unassembled in a configuration not regulated under the NFA (e.g., as a pistol). This is the ruling that alleviated the panic over "registering" pistol lowers. The concern was you couldn't make a pistol configured AR-15 and convert it into a rifle configured AR-15 without getting a license to manufacture (i.e. "make" a firearm). Quote:Held further, a firearm, as defined by 26 U.S.C. 5845(a)(4), is made when a handgun or other weapon with an overall length of less than 26 inches, or a barrel or barrels of less than 16 inches in length, is assembled or produced from a weapon originally assembled or produced only as a rifle. Such weapons must be registered and are subject to all requirements of the NFA. More confusion. Does this mean an AR-15 bought as a complete rifle can't be converted to a pistol?...I don't think so. The AR-15 can be assembled or produced as a rifle or pistol. Rulings from the link in post #49 (above). Obviously with .410 from point blank range you can get reasonable penetration. I in no way meant to disparage your credibility, I had no idea you meant from a .410 at 5 feet where obviously the disks would not work like a parachute and have a reasonable amount of distance to cover. I never felt disparaged, and consider your opinion every bit as valuable as my own. I just happen to disagree with your assessment. My thoughts on the effectiveness of this particular .410 is that the multiple wound channels are likely to inflict debilitating, game stopping injuries. In a home defense scenario, you'll be lucky to get a shot of at greater than 7-10 feet, and that would be well within the effective range of such a round. In the interest of full disclosure, I don't actually own such a weapon. It just looks effective, based on the data that I have seen. Perhaps I am overly optimistic, but there are several examples of the effectiveness of this particular combination that show it performing well at distances up to 10 yards. I don't know yor background, Kb, so I am not at all certain what you allude to, when you say you've "seen it for yourself". Naturally, real-world experiences have a greater bearing on such things, and I have none to refer to. What is your preferred Home Defense caliber, suppressed SBR or Bullpup - LRRPF52 - 01-05-2014 I've seen several engraved as "Pistol", although it might have gone to a serialized list at one point: ![]() They can't make heads or tails of what they're doing because NFA doesn't make Constitutional sense, nor does it make sense in Stare Decisis. It also defies logic since handguns are in wide circulation and can't be banned according to the Supreme Court now, but SBR's and SBS's are highly regulated. Furthermore, shotguns have a different arbitrary legal limit on the barrel length than rifles. Where's the legal justification for that? None of it makes any sense. Then show a court that a .22 LR AR15 with 16" barrel has a shorter OAL than a 14.5" AR15 in center-fire chambering, and ask the court what the intent of the law is. Then show them the overall length of an AR15 pistol, which has no special considerations other than being handled like a regular pistol.
