Amazon.com has AR accessories - fkleinbu - 05-12-2012 Like I said.. I'd use way too much ammo.. I have a buddy in Houston who has a couple FA firearms.. A Thompson and a Sten (the Sten is also silenced).. At a recent get-to-gether, I shot 2 magazines through the Sten, and that was more fun than sex.. Well not exactly but you get the picture.. I was only doing short bursts, but still a mag would only last about 30 seconds.. I could have gone through 500 rounds easily.. I'd use waaayy tooo much ammo.. flk k Amazon.com has AR accessories - ibgp3 - 05-12-2012 txgunner00 Wrote:That is correct and not limited to Amazon. Most dealers have disclaimers like "NFA rules apply" but there is no obligation to verify the purchaser can legally posses the upper. I have personally educated a few people in this subject post purchase. Fortunate for them they didn't get caught. He was shooting off duty on a weekend at a local range when two gang banger young "men" walked in with an AK. They fumbled around with it a while then let loose with several full auto bursts. The RO ran over to stop them and my buddy showed his badge and asked for their paper work. None- they claimed to have got it from a "friend". They were that stupid and deservedly went to jail. There a few other similar cases I've had personal experience with. Amazon.com has AR accessories - Variable - 05-13-2012 txgunner00 Wrote:9mm SBR uppers are super fun. I don't have one myself (yet) but a buddy of mine does as well as a registered FA lower. THAT's a good time.Yep, I used to shoot a lot of 9mm through my M11 and MP40, but I sold the MP40 and the M11 hasn't seen the light of day for a long time. I still use my registered sear in AR's a fair bit though. We used to have 9mm MP5's at work, and then they got MP5/10s, but they take a back door to the AR in my book. We also have SBS Rem. 870s, but they gather a lot of dust compared to the Colts as well. 9mm is great cost wise, but I read something that flipped on a lightbulb in my head one day: A 9mm ball round weighs almost the same as a 55 gr. M193 ball round.... After that I ditched every thing in 9mm larger than a Glock 34 (except the M11), and have stayed focused on 5.56 and Grendel ever since. The M11 is certainly fun and cheaper to shoot, and it is more controllable with a suppressor (CAC-9), but I choose to get more carbine practice these days. A Colt Commando will be harder to control on auto fire, but it doesn't need as many rounds to get the job done to start with.LOL A Colt DOE gun would be welcome in my stable for fun though. I just wouldn't want to pay what they go for these days!

There are blackouts on the serial number in the picture. If I registered it thru an FFL as a pistol, would I be off the hook? Amazon.com has AR accessories - fkleinbu - 05-13-2012 ibgp3 Wrote:AR 15 Pistol posted for sale on-line. Is there any way to know if this is as advertised? Oh not this thread again <grin>.. Opinions vary, but if it were me (and this is just my opinion), I'd just buy a stripped lower from an FFL, make sure it is listed as a "Pistol" or "Other" on the (no longer) yellow sheet.. Then swap the Internet purchased pistol to the new lower, and you will be good to go.. Others have posted you can legally convert a rifle to a pistol, and that might be the case.. However in my book, I don't want to be one of those with 10 years and a $25,000 fine sitting in my safe <grin>.. flk k Amazon.com has AR accessories - BjornF16 - 05-13-2012 LOL...I think what fkleinbu is really saying is there isn't an easy way to verify the lower receiver was never originally a rifle. That ad has a lot of information listed, but a lot of it is useless. I would want to know, as a minimum, more about the barrel (twist), the buffer weight, trigger, how many rounds fired, etc. I'm also currently "shopping" for a pistol. My approach is to find (or build up) a good quality upper. I started a thread here. My suggestion, to play it safe in fkleinbu's book, would be to purchase a new stripped lower (adding pistol buffer) or new pistol configured lower from an FFL dealer, then purchase a pistol upper of your choice. There are other threads on the Grendel forum that speak to barrel length/reliability for 5.56 pistols/sbr's. Based upon some of the expertise on this site, I'm leaning towards a 11.5" barrel for reliability (might take the Nestea plunge for a 10.5" from LMT configured as Mk18) in 1:7 twist. Of course, I keep eyeballing the AA 10.5" upper... ![]() Just my $.02. But there could be many reasons to de-register (none of which I am currently in or have ever been in). The most likely scenario I can see is if I passed away leaving my wife the SBR (as part of my gun trust) and she didn't want to deal with the "hassle" and reconfigured to rifle to sell quickly. I know this thread has moved forward, but I wanted to get your opinion on this. Back in 2001 I contacted the BATF and they made it clear that if the rifle was not configured [stored] to be a SBR, then the NFA regulation was a non-issue on a registered SBR. So why de-register...EVER? Just put a >16" upper on it and be done with it - as it can be sold/transfered as a normal rifle with no paperwork. Now, for what ever reason, you can always revert back if you choose, but there is no reason to [ever] de-register an NFA SBR. If you move to a non-NFA state or "will" an NFA firearm in a trust, etc. - the simple task of converting it to a non-NFA configuration is an easy one and requires no paperwork. If you file paperwork to de-register and then choose to go back, you have to start the whole process all over again with the wait and an additional $200 stamp. 90% of my AR rifles are registered as SBR's; however, only about 20% are actually configured in an SBR configuration. My logic can be compared to early 1986. There will be a day when NFA firearms are no longer allowable and are only grandfathered in. I am slowly making every AR rifle I own a registered SBR even though it is not currently configured that way (I just will ammend my form 1 as I see fit). History will repeat itself, and we will most likely lose our ability to posess SBRs at some point in time. So, to the best of my knowledge, there is absoutly no reason to de-register an NFA rifle if all you have to do is change the configuration to >16". If you have a golden egg- why give it up? What are your thoughts/opinions? Amazon.com has AR accessories - keith13b - 05-14-2012 BjornF16 Wrote:Of course, I keep eyeballing the AA 10.5" upper... I have 2 on a form 1 - running a Spikes T2 Buffer - shoots like a dream - even with Wolf gold ammo! The thread pitch sucks, so adding a suppressor is a pain! Can't wait to finish my BLK build! Amazon.com has AR accessories - fkleinbu - 05-14-2012 These are purely hypothetical situations, but let's say Mary (we will call her) completes whatever steps necessary to obtain a SBR stamp in the state in which she lives.. She enjoys her new toy, but gets relocated to a state which does not allow SBRs.. She doesn't want to waste that $200 bucks so she just sells the short barreled upper, and gets a nice 16" upper.. Besides, she might just get to move back.. Off to the new state she goes.. "I live a crime free life, who will ever know" she thinks.. "I'm no idiot, l saved myself that $200 bucks".. (p.s. Sorry, I just had to put in the idiot bit for a bit of humor.. You initially did come across pretty strongly - I hope you can grin about it now).. Anyway, her new state turns out to have more crime, and one night she awakes to an unexpected noise.. She dials 911, and grabs that 16" rifle.. The bad guys hear her stirring, and head out the front door.. The Police show up, she gives them a statement, and as a routine they write down the type of weapon and serial number.. They thank Mary for her co-operation, and go file the report.. Being a thorough LEO, the numbers of the rifle are checked.. A hit.. Ops, the rifle is listed as a SBR.. But the state does not allow SBR.. Bigger ops.. How long a barrel did the rifle have.. Doesn't matter.. It is listed as a SBR.. This state doesn't allow SBRs.. But it's not an SBR anymore - the barrel length is 16" or longer.. It doesn't matter - it is listed as an SBR.. Mary gets a return visit.. It's not a visit to let her know they caught the guys who were in her house, but that she now will get 3 squares a day for the next 25 years and loses everything.. But at least Mary didn't waste that $200 bucks.. Alternate ending.. The break in never happens.. Mary meets Ted and they get married.. But Ted doesn't like guns so they pretty much stay locked up.. That is until Mary suddenly gets hit by a drunk driver and meets an untimely death.. Ted, though heartbroken, starts to sell off the things he no longer wants in the house.. He puts an add up in the local paper.. Ted is very happy when the guy buying the rifle is an off duty LEO because he know it will not turn up in the wrong hands.. At the station the next day, the LEO casually runs the rifles numbers to make sure it wasn't stolen or used in a crime - it is really too bad civilians cannot do this easily.. Anyway it turn up as being registered as an SBR, and now Ted, poor anti-gun Ted could end up in Jail, but Mary did not waste the $200.. It just isn't worth it.. When it comes to guns, it is best to stay squeaky clean and never put yourself into a position which could lead to unexpected results for you, or a loved one.. Go way beyond what is required.. It doesn't matter if you are even proven innocent in the end.. Personally the $200 bucks is chump change.. Just look at the pin head in Florida.. He started out that night really thinking he was doing good, and probably was.. Without going into who was at fault, he is now in a real mess and will lose everything even.. Worst of all he will have to live with the fact he killed that kid.. It just isn't worth it.. That is just one man's opinion.. Your mileage will vary.. Personally, I also think I have said enough on this topic.. Flk ar Amazon.com has AR accessories - Variable - 05-14-2012 My only real quibble with the above would be that I don't believe NFA status is reflected in any of the normal checks (NCIC, etc.) that are available to regular law enforcement. A weapon that isn't reported stolen won't show up period. That being said, if I wanted to check NFA status I could call Martinsburg and find out. They would give me a hit back if I requested it and something popped up in the registry. I could be wrong, but that's how it is to my knowledge. Either way, I would still treat an NFA arm as exactly that (NFA)-- regardless. While I think the whole NFA registry is a ridiculous mess and a burdensome farce foisted on us by the anti-gunners, it isn't worth getting burned over either. Amazon.com has AR accessories - txgunner00 - 05-14-2012 I'm not sure how individual states look at it but as far as the feds are concerned, if it's not configured as an SBR, it's not an SBR. Unless it has a <16" barrel on it, it's just a standard receiver. That said, I wouldn't want to be the test case in court defending that argument. Not here to argue, but I do respect your interpertation. Amazon.com has AR accessories - keith13b - 05-23-2012 I found the link the BATFE referred me too (day late & a $ short) - so if others following this thread have questions - many can be answered here: RE: http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/national-firearms-act-short-barreled-rifles-shotguns.html#interstate-transpotation Q: Does the installation of a barrel over 16 inches in length (SBR) or 18 inches in length (SBS) remove the firearm from the purview of the NFA? If so, is this considered a permanent change? Installation of a barrel greater than 16 inches in length (SBR) or 18 inches in length (SBS) will remove the firearm from the purview of the NFA provided the registrant does not maintain control over the parts necessary to reconfigure the firearm as a SBR or SBS. Q: Is it necessary to send notification to ATF and receive acknowledgement that the SBR or SBS has been removed from the purview of the NFA before it may be sold as a GCA firearm? There is no requirement for the possessor of a registered NFA firearm to notify ATF that the firearm has been removed from the purview of the NFA. However, ATF recommends the possessor notify the NFA Branch of such changes in writing so that the possessor is not mistakenly identified as the owner if the firearm is later used in a crime. If, at the time of transfer, the firearm does not meet the definition of a SBR, it should be transferred without filing the NFA transfer application and without payment of the transfer tax. Q: May I transfer the receiver of a short-barrel rifle or shotgun to an FFL or to an individual as I would any GCA firearm? Yes. A weapon that does not meet the definition of a NFA “firearm” is not subject to the NFA and a possessor or transferor needn’t comply with NFA requirements. The firearm is considered a GCA firearm and may be transferred under the provisions of that law. |
