< 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - Kswhitetails - 09-25-2020 Agreed. I've been looking, but nothing so far. Out of curiosity, I started looking for an example of a 30-30, which Grendel was always compared to. Couldn't find that either... I've been looking for legitimate chamber temperature measurements, and haven't found any yet. I know the laws of physics... but temperature of gasses during combustion under pressure makes simple calculations complex... brain smoke commence!~ < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - grayfox - 09-25-2020 As a "what-if" to all you engineers out there... I think the gas velocity until the bullet exits is roughly equal to bullet velocity, during acceleration which would put it all at up to about 2500-3000 ft/sec, and all roughly in the same ballpark. Until bullet exit, then due to venting of the remaining pressure it escapes at 2-3x initial bullet MV, for that brief time. Wouldn't most of the erosion therefore happen after bullet exit, during that high-pressure vent? If so then gas volume/temperature and pressure at time of exit would relate to erosion. For a 243 compared to smaller diameter/case volume/barrel volumes such erosion would be high: high volume through a narrow pipe... grendels, with less case volume and typically shorter barrels as well as lower final exit gas pressure, would tend to make it low, or lower. A theory anyway. As to temperatures, I would guess that particle velocity has more to do with erosion that particle/gas temperature. Temperature would mostly affect pressure... thus velocity. But velocity would rule. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - Fess - 09-25-2020 I think that it is important to note that the throat sees not only combustion gasses, it sees powder particles as well. The larger the case volume-to-bore diameter, the more abrasive particles at high temperature and pressure will be sand-blasting its way past the throat. On a related topic, I have seen comments from precision shooters that state that aligning the moving mix of gasses and burning powder with a long neck helps reduce throat erosion. I have mainly seen this from proponents of 6mmPPC and .338 Norma Magnum. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - grayfox - 09-25-2020 The thing about a long throat, that would make sense. Erosion is a violent mechanical stripping away of material, like sand blasting. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - Lemonaid - 09-26-2020 I will start a thread "King of the Grendel round count" to try and get data on what to expect as far a barrel life. Parting shot (yes attempted humor) on this, Revolvers have small amounts of powder (357 mag 8.0 max of cfe pistol at 32,500 psi) and lowish pressure compared to rifles and yet they experience flame cutting. So I would think the less time it takes to get to peak pressure the more damage done. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - Dino11 - 09-26-2020 Was at the range yesterday and just by chance their was a rep from Hornady coaching another shooter on honing his skills and helping him set up his rifle for use in PRS. He came over to me and asked me how I liked my 6 ARC, he noticed the ammo boxes and the spent brass laying on the ground right next to him. He was not an engineer but had a lot of good knowledge to pass on. One of the topics we touched on was barrel life, I brought it up due to this thread. His reply was he was not an engineer and did not know all the specifics but assured me that I was not going to shoot out my barrel in 3000 rounds. That was one of the requirements the DoD specified was the barrel had to last. The military guns have full auto capabilities and they needed something with life in it. He also stated that the DoD had a lot of specifics that this platform had to meet. He was not sure what was engineered into this platform, and that many different calibers and materials used were taken into consideration. Development took over two years. So what it comes down to the DoD would never had excepted a platform that burnt a barrel out in 3000 rounds, it would have never lasted through training one soldier. I asked him what I could expect, he could not give me a definitive answer on that question. On Monday I am going to call a number the gentleman passed on to me to speak to an engineer to get some educated answers. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - StoneHendge - 09-26-2020 Wrong thread < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - Texcl2 - 09-28-2020 I have never really given my 18 black hole barrel a proper benched test for accuracy but I know my target has a 1 black dot and I can keep all my rounds in that dot at 100 yards with my reloads and a calm day from stable field positions such as shooting prone off a bag or off the hood of a truck or over a log. I typically shoot 5 shot groups because thats what my mag holds. Wasnt an expensive barrel. Its a 5p model. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - Snapper314 - 10-21-2020 Would a barrel from JP Rifles be considered among these 1/2 MOA brands? < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - StoneHendge - 10-21-2020 Snapper314 Wrote:Would a barrel from JP Rifles be considered among these 1/2 MOA brands? My 22" can when I can. Unfortunately the latter isn' as often as I like. With that said, I doubt you'd see a JP on the paper shooting circuit. But there are plenty of them on the PRS circuit. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - bamban - 10-26-2020 I chamber my own barrels and I support the TX JRs High Power Team by spinning their barrels from Shilen donated Select Match blanks. I also do barrel work supporting my brother's benchrest shooting. I give him a one day service. Must have chambered a 30BR for him from every barrel manufacturer out there. I was schooled by a retired benchrest gunsmith, so I treat all barrels as though they go to a benchrest rifle. I never owned a Grendel till a local gunsmith friend gave me a take off bolt gun barrel that I repurposed it into an AR Grendel. I cut off the old 6.5x47 chamber, turned the fat section into an AR dimension and chambered it. Here is one check I do on the chamber. This one is checking the area ahead of the leade angle, the most important part of the chamber to make sure the bullet goes in straight. https://youtu.be/EWS7StHQ80c I also check the rest of the chamber for runout. Watch "12 Aug 2020 Chamber Runout To The Neck" on YouTube https://youtu.be/3XZvLCJZ-lQ As you might notice the tenon does not a have the threads, I do that last after I set headapace by adjusting the shoulder on the chamber that purposely cut about 0.010 deeper. Easier to adjust chamber by cutting the shoulder instead of running the reamer to final headspace FYI, for the bolt I just chucked up couple of old GI M16 bolts and machined the face for the Grendel dimension, and bought a Grendel extractor. On the Grendel barrel I never had the time to do load development, I just threw the load and on brass I processed from somebody's absoleted Lee die set. He upgraded to fancy match set. I sent the target that I shot at 200 yards when I was zeroing the scope to a friend. He ran his target calculating app on the groups. Those rounds were the only ones I shot through the barrel since. I only have a little over a box of once fired brass. The 2000MR load looks very promising. Once I get more brass I will start tweaking the load. I believe I can tweak this to agg nicely at around half minute. My only limitation for running heavier/longer bullets is the barrel, it is only a 10 twist. I may look for some 100 grains hunting bullets if I can find any 120s. FYI, I am not in the business, just a hobbyist. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - lazyengineer - 10-26-2020 grayfox Wrote:As a "what-if" to all you engineers out there... This is exactly what I think. In industry, I learned the most erosive fluid on a pipe is actually gas, more than a liquid. And there is a trend in AR pistols I've seen hinted that shorter barrels erode out faster than longer barrels, which at first seems counter intuitive, until you factor in the fact that a short barrel means a larger mass ejection of very-high velocity gasses (and erosive still unburned powder) ejecting to atmosphere once the bullet leaves. It's one of the reasons I prefer running a slightly fast powder, vs a slightly slow powder now (when I have to choose). And yes, I think you hit on barrel life factors as well, with diameter. Which is why 6.5 barrels outlast the same round necked down to 6mm. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - lazyengineer - 10-26-2020 bamban Wrote:I chamber my own barrels and I support the TX JRs High Power Team by spinning their barrels from Shilen donated Select Match blanks. Of all things Grendel, the bolt system is its biggest Beowulf. Those lugs are weaker and strained to the limit. When made right, that limit still works, but the margin of error is low, unlike with .223. It won't kaboom, but lugs and extractors break in Grendels more than typical - especially if not new and to spec. The BFT group buy Grendle bolts aren't that expensive, and have relief cuts on every lug, that I like. I haven't broken a Grendel bolt yet, but I've broken at least 3 extractors so far. I'm starting to lose count. (But not BFT'S Team Extractor yet!) < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - bamban - 10-26-2020 lazyengineer Wrote:You're going to love it. Do these bolts require a compatible barrel extension? For high power competition application we use these barrel extensions (BE). I used the same one my Grendel. Though these are longer by 0.300, and the threads are 20 TPI, instead of 16, they are still compatible with M16 GI bolt dimensions. https://www.whiteoakarmament.com/competition-barrel-extension-m4.html These BEs are ever so slightly larger in OD compared to the original ones. When coupled to a Bravo Company upper, I have to heat up the receiver face to slide the extension in, thus providing a tight fit without any heroics like Locktite to fill the slop in the BE to upper fit. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - lazyengineer - 10-26-2020 bamban Wrote:Thank you for the bolt suggestion, I will definitely get one. It's a standard AR barrel extension. I think the design spec on Grendel was to be as compatible as possible with standard AR parts, so I'm pretty confident it's just a basic AR barrel extension at least - you should be fine there. Though it looks like the WOA version requires some customization of the barrel threads as part of its design. The nuances of which shouldn't be affected by Grendel aspects any. And like you, I too have switched to BCM uppers for their tighter fit. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - lazyengineer - 10-26-2020 bamban Wrote:Thank you for the bolt suggestion, I will definitely get one. I think you meant to say "barrel extension", and not "bolt?" Yes, they are the same. Though the nuances to make the WOA non-standard version work will still apply the same regardless of calibre I'm sure. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - grayfox - 10-26-2020 In lots of forum experience, bam uppers are tight and need to heat them up. As to bolts, the standard bolt face depth is 0.136, I think the 556 bolts are 0.125. So chambers will have to handle the one or the other. Bfts bolts are the std depth. So you want to make sure you stay with those dimensions. A 0.125 bolt face depth and chamber will work but Id think you want to go with the 0.136 depth. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - bamban - 10-26-2020 grayfox Wrote:In lots of forum experience, bam uppers are tight and need to heat them up. The M16 GI bolts I opened up are cut to 0.136 depth. I modified 2 to have a spare. I will buy that one suggested here and chamber another barrel. I have a 28 inch 6.5x284 that I used for 1000 yard matches that I can harvest a good 20 inch in the middle from it to turn into an AR barrel. < 1/2 MOA 6.5 Grendel Barrel? - grayfox - 10-27-2020 Dang auto correct! I meant bcm of course. |
