Personally i would, as doing all the machine work including dies and reamers myself the only cost (other than my time) for me was the cost of material for reamers and die.
All other parts would be the same if building any other AR caliber.
I do think it offers a decent performance increase over 224 Grendel ...from what i read on net and not having any personal experience with one.
As i said this is my first go round with Grendel case of any form.... but sometime in future "plan" to chamber barrels for other calibers based off my reamer design.... which i come to find out after the fact is pretty close to a Grinch from what info i have been able to find... so what i first thought was my idea is actually ...someone else's old idea...

I picked up some 40 gr Nosler and ran a ladder with 8208 and Benchmark. The 8208 was best as i figured and was a little surprised it got as high a velocity as it did. 4141 fps was the highest velocity. Primers looked great .
The short oal (.100" jump) , light bullets and +3 gas system would not let bolt cycle far enough to eject and or feed. Would need to open gas port so will shoot these in something else.
Accuracy was also surprisingly good for such a long jump. 3 shots .46" ctc @ 100 yds.
I also took an IMP case and necked up to 6.5 to see if I thought it would be worth building one. I can get roughly 3 gr more powder under a 95 VMAX (30 gr BM is compressed according to Hodgdon) so should be worthwhile to build one. I hope the Ruger predators chamber is small enough to be able to be cleaned up with my IMP reamer for a direct comparison.

Since drilling the gas port in the 14 twist I have approx. 100 or so rnds through it. It feeds fine except for loads like the 40 gr mentioned above or fireforming loads that do not cycle the bolt far enough to eject spent vase and or does not pick up the next loaded round.

Got home from work with just enough time to put a 12 break in rounds through the 8 twist on my Ruger bolt action. Just shot fireforming loads which have proven to shoot pretty good from AR barrels.
50 gr Bulk Rem.HP ahead of CFE 223.
I always let the barrel tell me how many 1 shot/cleans are needed before shooting a 3 clean then a 5 and clean.
This one was rather good from the start other than the sludge CFE produces.
Shots 8-12 produced a .42 ctc group so think it's going to shoot.
Since its an 8 twist I throated it for 80 Eldm's @ 2.3 which put bearing surface just above neck/shoulder junction and will still feed from uncut AR mag which the RAP has.

Loaded up some 80 eldm's for the bolt gun over Varget and R16, both light loads just to get a few more rnds on barrel .
Only had time for 12 rnds before dark.... all 3 shot groups were under 1/2" with best at .34".
Varget loads was 3011 fps ,R16 was at 3035 fps .
Primers and case expansion #'s show plenty of room to increase powder charges. R16 fills the case up pretty good , I know i can increase charge weight but not sure if will have enough room for top velocities with 80's.
I obtained little over 3000 fps with 88's/R16 in 7 twist AR but dont know if if the 8 twist will stabilize the 88's.
I messed up really..... should have run the 8 twist on AR as the 80's are optimumn at 2.30-2.31 which will easily work from SS AR mags without notching mag.
The 88's need to be at 2.39 for bearing surface to be above neck /shoulder junction which would work better in the Bolt gun.
Will probably order another 7 twist blank for 88's in bolt gun.
But happy with accuracy of all 3 barrels and expect all to get better with more rounds downrange .
Hoping to get 80's to 3150+ from bolt gun...we shall see.

Shot a few 88 ELDM'S through the 8 twist barrel @ 2920 fps.
The .46 ctc group is evidence they are stabilized, although I'm sure the B.C. is being compromised with less than ideal twist rate.
Will have to test at extended ranges to see how much is compromised and if they remain stabilized at longer distances.
It will help some once barrel is fully broken in and do some load development at higher velocities.

Wouldn't ya know i get home at a decent time and it's drizzling on and off..... Westex sent me an email urging me to try 2000MR about the same time I got home from work...
I had been wanting to shoot some 75 gr bullets so figured I would load a ladder with 2000MR....I got to 3179 fps before rain moved in again.
When it stop raining I continued the ladder and got up to 3246fps before it started drizzling again.
Case/case expansion and primer still looked good but velocity jumped up quickly with last load shot so is probably about all I will push it .

Those are pretty impressive velocities out of a small case. That 40 grain load is sizzling.

For sure am happy with velocities from small case.
The 40 gr load was from 22" barrel, have not tested in 27" yet.
Did some load development in 27" bolt gun Sun.
with 80 gr ELDM, got up to 3150 fps with R16 but accuracy was at 3100 fps.
5 shots at 100 was .42 so decided to test at longer range. With crops on can only get to 650 yds but better than nothing.
Got a 3 shot group just over 2" 2 of which cut each other. If I used flags and could read/correct for wind better could have been one HECK of a group!
Almost no vertical at 650 yds... can't wait for a calm day to shoot some long range groups!
This barrel is a turd velocity wise compared to the 22" 14 twist and the 27" 7 twist. , same loads with 88's are 75-100 fps less in 8 twist vs 7 twist . Was hoping it would speed up but hasn't yet.

Ok, this 8 twist is finally picking up speed, have 180 rds through it total.
Did a ladder with R16 and 88's , got up to 3073 fps but would be hard on brass..... 3000 fps is where I'll run it for now and hopefully will continue to get faster.
Shot the 88's at 650 yds, while accurate they were 1moa low from the 8 twist / ballistic app called for. The 80s are dead on what app calls for, so ordered a couple 7 twist blanks for 88's.

I think 6.5 twist would be too fast at the velocities I can run.
Even a 7 twist will spin 88 ELDM 8k+ more rpm than what Hornady suggest....so jacket failure could be a problem.
Doubtful until throat gets eroded/barrel gets rough as lots of guys run them at higher velocities/rpm than what I will be but Hornady says to keep them under 300k rpm.
I could slow them down but then would lose load density/consistency. 7 twist should be optimum.... math says so anyways , proof is always on target though.
Will be putting together a fireforming rifle on a mauser 98 action and an old 14 twist 223 takeoff to save on rds through good barrels.
With Norma brass I am pretty comparable to 22 BR capacity/performance so should get comparable barrel life 2 to 3000 rnds with the heavy bullets, more in AR platform as will be slower/lower pressures.

Took the bolt gun back to the 1000 yd range where this all began yesterday .
Was pleased with how it shot , even though im not the best at reading wind. Hits and misses where easy to spot even at 1000 yds.
The 4"×6" plate at 1000 was the only one to escape an 80 gr ELDM @3120 . Wind was only 6mph but was constantly shifting every and any direction except straight away.
.5 moa plates were easy enough under 1000 yd but wind wasnt as crazy .
I also had some 75 gr BTHP loads loaded with H4350 , H4350 while pretty close in burn to R16 is less bulky and can get more in case.
The H4350 pushes the 75 BTHP 3206 av with ES of 9 fps. This load shot very well also until we got to 1000 yd. The lower BC of 75 made the crazy winds harder to deal with.
8 twist must have picked up more in velocity , about half way through the day i had to take 1 moa off what app called for to make hits on steel.
All in all a great day on the range made even better on the way home when i stopped at a gun store and found 8lb of H4350 .... my shooting partner actually found it hid behind some shotgun powder!
Oh and didnt find anymore "interesting " empty brass either!

Chambered a 7 twist for 88 ELDM ....
I throated it for OAL of 2.385" which puts base of bearing surface at neck /shoulder junction.
After fireforming some more brass ,mainly for barrel break in i loaded some 88's over varget.... shots 57, 58 and 59 produced a ......096" ctc group.
While im pretty sure i can easily reach the next node....... this load is already at 2960 fps and should speed up with more rnds on barrel...... while this is only one 3 shot group... .096" is hard to ignore!
I will probably test more at this level then see what velocity is possible with the extra capacity of longer OAL after barrel settles down velocity wise.

Got aftet some yotes this weekend.... yesterday had one just over crest of hill.... hill was 399 and otherside of little valley was 633 guessed and dialed 500.... yote was evedently 450-60 and bullet went right over his back .....
Had an easy shot at 240 this morn, was standing straight away , south end was lifted skyward almost sending him end over end on impact!
Used the 24" 7 twist /88 ELDM/Varget load @3000 fps

I really like my 224 improved version ! It hammers hogs with 80 and 82 grain Bergers ! Running the OSS Helix suppressor makes the AR much nicer to shoot when you get a lot cleaner brass . I am going to have to try some long range shooting but really need a different scope to try that .

Awesome! I bet it does hammer hogs! I been joking saying im going to name my version 22 Hammer or DRT.... BUT it truly does hammer , on recieving end and accuracy wise!
I ran the 75's up to 3340 fps with H4350 in the Ruger..... primers had some cratering but does with lesser loads and Rugers are know for that.
I need to bush bolt and retest. Didnt have any ejector marks and case expansion numbers were good. Although i know this has to be a hot load.... as it is 223 WSM territory..... according to Hodgdon data and WSM is burning 8-10 gr more powder.
What about the other guy you know that was building one, he ever do any testing?
