6.5 Grendel Preferred Loads - Zeneffect - 01-25-2022

I've only tested the 108 scenar with norma 202 and couldn't get the gun to cycle well. Willing to try some cfe though as I have pleanty of that and not much desire to use any since discovering the wonders of lvr.

I can run it through quickload if you can provide some details like cartridge overall length and case capacity

The guys in this forum talked me into reloading a while ago and I am really thankful for that. I got off to a great start with my Lee turret kit and loaded the recommended load in top of thread but with ELDM 123 grain (instead of AMAX) with the 28.5 grains of IMR 8208XBR and shot sub-MOA right out the chute. I thought reloading was real simple: just find a good recipe that someone posts and duplicate it. Well, a lot of time and expense later, I've learned a lot in finding the ideal load for all of my rifles, but I've been using that originally suggested load data for my go-to round in my Grendel. I've had great results out to 500 yards. But I had to switch to the ELDM 120 grain this time around since the 123s weren't available and I remember Johnny (Shannon) had great luck with these, so I decided to give them a try with both Accurate 2520 and IMR 8208. Well, I got the best results ever shooting groups at 100 yards.

The first group shot high, so I adjusted scope and shot at same .75" target and got a .22 MOA group at 26.8 grains (2400 fps) but I'll be fine tuning the load at 27.7 gr (2470 fps - last group to right) since it seemed to be in a more stable zone (comparing velocity and POI of groups before and after) and still shot very good group. Only shot 3 shot groups due to component scarcity and cost these days, but this gives me enough data to hone in and find best load.

I really do appreciate all the help I have received from the very knowledgeable people in this forum. Also, the barrel used above was a group buy barrel.

Worstletter Wrote:25.4 gr of CFE BLK and Hornady 120gr ELD with a COAL of 2.230. Velocity between 2450 and 2490 fps.

Not sure how this one slipped by.

Do NOT use CFE BLK in 6.5 Grendel, especially under a 120gr. CFE BLK is a fast powder more appropriate for 300 Blackout, 6.8 SPC, and 7.62x39.

H110 is another really common powder for 6.8 SPC, .300 Whisper/Blackout, and 7.62x39, but there is zero load data for it in 6.5 Grendel.

I’m not aware of any published load data for it in 6.5 Grendel.

The only bullets I can think of that it might work with are the driving band solids from GS Custom, like the 95gr HV, but again, no data exists with that combo either.

Sorry to derail for a bit there, but that has to be recognized.

The only load data I have handy is the Hornady manual. It calls for WSR primers. I have CCI and CCI SR Magnum primers. Anyone have any data using CCI magnum primers?

6.5 Grendel Preferred Loads - BillS - 03-24-2022

Do you think matters if I use CCi standard smr primers or can I use magnum smr primers? Hornady load manual says WSR. Primers are hard to come by.

6.5 Grendel Preferred Loads - Zeneffect - 03-24-2022

I prefer the magnum primers personally. Just use the magnums and work up like normal, nearly everyone here uses them successfully.

In an AR-15 with floating firing pins the primers with thicker cups help reduce the hazard of a slam fire. Magnum primers like CCI 450 are commonly used by forum members. BR4 bench rest primers have thicker cups as do military CCI 41 and Federal AR primers.

Works for short barrels better but you're correct there's no published data.

You're correct there's no published data for CFEBLK. This powder is only ideal for short barrels less than 12". Sorry if my post didn't make that clear.

Let's be clear about interior ballistics! A shorter barrel length DOES NOT make a fast powder safe if it is dangerous in a long barrel!

Maximum pressure happens before the bullet moves more than an inch or so.

Hence the safety warnings about CFE BLK apply to all barrel lengths!

You can remove the post that won't offend me. I have shot with CFEBLK in a long barrel as well with 123gr projectiles. Seems fine to me "ideally" there are better powders. With my parameters of a very short COL and minimum case fill I agree it's probably not a good idea. This combination was a result of the times we live in and the availably of options. This load is not listed anywhere in any form. Did I experience the woahs of testing? Yes and rightfully so. This load will destroy brass in a autoloader if it's pushed to far. The resilience of the parent case is the rule not the exception to the cartridge, as I will claim it can handle anything you put into it. I gave this forum a gift of an individual's effort to inform the people of another option. If it's taken away so be it. If you don't believe me try it. I will once again reiterate that this is an advanced load that beginners should step away from and there are better options. This in no way should deter anyone from trying something on there own and experimenting with your abilities and practices.

I worked up this load.

COAL 2.26
Bullet: 120gr Sierra Match King
Powder: TAC 27.3gr
Primer: CCI 41
Brass: Lapua

6.5 Grendel Preferred Loads - Smtimelevi - 04-14-2022

Hornady 1x, CCI 41
130gr ELD-M
31.3 gr LeverEvolution (compressed)
2.265 coal
1/2 Moa at 100yds.

Did a ladder starting at 30.5gr and ending at 31.6gr of lever. Benched, bipod, rear bag. 18” Odin works factory upper. None of the lever groups were over 1 Moa at 100. That rifle has been known to shoot a 4 Moa group if it doesn’t like a power, so makes me really like LeverEvolution

Groups circled in blue are the Lever with 130 ELD-M

The black circled are 123 SST with BL-C2

I’ll update with a picture later.

Have you chronographed that load? I bet it's cookin'.

6.5 Grendel Preferred Loads - Smtimelevi - 04-14-2022

I have not, need to get a chrono. I’m estimating 2600 fps. Give or take 40 fps. No pressure signs. I actually had pressure signs on a batch of H335 with 123 SST that didn’t shoot near as well.

Smt,

130gn at 2600fps - Are you shooting that out of an AR?

6.5 Grendel Preferred Loads - Smtimelevi - 04-15-2022

Yes, 18” barrel. Is that a high estimate? I’ve seen reports here of people getting 2550 ish with a similar load.

6.5 Grendel Preferred Loads - Klem - 04-15-2022

Sm,

Yes, it's pretty high. If that velocity is correct and we know it's only an estimate, it will be an overload. If true, your gun is being hammered. The weakest link in AR's are the bolt lugs which will likely crack sooner or later. Unfortunately, AR's are not as robust as bolt guns, which means they are not as forgiving to overpressure.

Be also aware, in this calibre overpressure can occur before typical signs like flattened and cratered primers. Like the 338LM the Grendel case is designed to take more of the pressure share than other calibres. But the pressure is still there; pounding the bolt lugs even though the spent cases look OK.

Understood. I didn’t have load data in any of my books, Cfe 223 was the closest thing so I browsed around on here for a load. I may have been getting too much info from Bolt gun guys
