6.5 Grendel Preferred Loads - Armadillo66 - 04-20-2018
Is the 127gr Barnes LRX too long? I was thinking about trying some loaded longer than mag length for some single shot, first round out hunting loads.
I was particularly curious about using the 127 Barnes and Lever revolution or the 8208.

I hope someone here can point me in the right direction, first time posting, since joined. Just zeroed at 200y, using a Leopold Mark AR 6x18 mil. dot scope.

Muzzle velocity is really helpful for ballistics data.
If you have a good 200 yd zero, you could check rise/drop at 100 and 300 yds and then toy with the ballistic calculators to close in on your actual data.

One could further refine his suggestion by first asking What is the longest range one could reasonably expect reliable expansion with this bullet?
Second ask What is the longest range one might be willing to take a shot at game with that load? (Needs to be shorter than the answer above.)
Then, try to find a place to shoot where a paper target can be positioned at least as far out as the answer to the second question. Then shoot at this range to get the drop and again at an intermediate range (likely your nominal sight-on range).
Then adjust the velocity in your ballistic calculator to match within an inch or so the two ranges where you have actual drop information.
The exercise will place one within minute of deer at all ranges closer in than the max rnage for which a shot might be taken.

I had better groups with "Load #8" below with 3 shots inside a 1" square with the 2 remaining touching off to the left (poor technique) but I think I will give myself a bigger safety margin and work with 28.2.

Re-shot both "Load #5" and "Load #8", the 28.4 seemed a bit more accurate but I realized by then that my rate of fire was having a negative effect on group sizes along with me jerking the last couple of shots.
My 28.2 load was very consistent and I think I will do a little more case prep ie chamfer, de-burr etc.

Finally found my long range load
Star line Brass ,cci 450 primers , 123gr smk with 28gr of AR Comp. shot .68 5 shot group at 115yards with a SD of 6.37 avg 2492fps.
Loaded at 2.55 oal and 1.660 to ojive
Faxon match 20 barrel out of a gas gun

I finally got my 6.5 under 1" today in fact it is right at 1/2" its a 18" BCA barrel, bullets are seated at 2.270 with 28.7 gr of 8208 123 gr Hornady SST CCI 41 primers and Hornady brass. Every thing up to this load was 1 1/2" or larger. There does not appear to be any excess pressure as I have compared the fired rounds with factory cases and both measure the same as well as appear the same. I have a couple questions I see many of ya'll use CCI 450 primers where I use CCI 41s do you ever have doubles? I have a POF trigger in my AR and have experienced doubles with Remington 7 1/2s and Winchester SR primers. Since I switched to the 41s I have not had a double. I had the same problem in my AR 10 also till I went to the 34s by the way that's a hoot running 5, 308's out in a burst. Sure gets every ones attention on the line.
My next step will be to load 10 cases with this load to see if I have any stretching issues or primer pocket issues. I'm a little concerned as this load is a bit over the 28.5 most are using.

Since I could not find any cci450 primers, but did acquire some cci41's, I to am curious how the two compare? I am under the impression the 41's are a "military spec" of the 450's ??

I don't know what your problem may be with slam fire "double fire" but I have run CCI 400, 450, BR-4, Rem 7 1/2, Winchester silver color, have heard that the new brass color primers have had slam fire issues, Wolf SRM in 4 different ARs that have 3.5 lb POF triggers and another one that has a CMC 2.5 lb trigger with no problems. Is your trigger the problem or is it the free float firing pin. If it is the trigger releasing you need to fix that. A long long time ago when I first started loading for my M1 Garand I learned not to use Federal 210M primers because I got slam fire. I know what it feels like to shoot a BAR with a 2 and 3 round burst. Never had a problem with any other make primers in it either.

Hello All,
I am new here, been reading a lot. I picked up my first Grendal AR on Saturday. It has an Odin Works 18" barrel and matching bolt. I had 3 types of ammo when I went to sight in my scope. I started with Hornady Black 123, then Federal Barnes 130. The rifle shot like crap, 1.5 MOA at best. I thought I had a lemon. The last ammo I used was Hornady 123 SST, this ammo was solid .5 MOA. Anyone else have experience like this? I unfortunately had purchased 500 rounds of the black... I plan on reloading for this when I have brass so my question is does anyone have a load that mimics the SST load as a starting point for me? I will keep trying the black as I can't return it, maybe it will get better

I have seen inconsistent accuracy on a new barrel. Some barrels improve with use, I wouldn’t give up on the Hornady 123 grain ELD-M Black just yet.

Yeah that is what I am hoping. It only has 60 rounds on it. The groups seemed to tighten up at distance, so maybe it will break in.

I have an 18" Odin that was purchased with a matching bolt as well, and I see similar results. My rifle prefers the SST's over the ELD-M's. Can't explain why, but after a couple of boxes of the ELD-M's, I gave the remaining few away to a bud with a Howa Mini.

Good to know. Wish I would have known that before I bought 500 of the ELDs, LOL. Do you have a load worked up with the SST's?

I have an 18" Oden barrel and the only factory ammo I have shot is 123 SST and it would average between 1 1/2 to 1 3/4" five shots at 100 yards. With certain handloads it shoots 1/2 MOA. It really likes 120 Sierra Pro Hunter, Hornady case, CCI 450, 28.5 IMR 8208 COAL 2.250 with a medium Lee Factory Crimp. It runs average 2540 fps. I have only had this rifle a little over 3 months and have not had the weather or time to try all the loads I want to try.

31 Grains of CFE, with CCI 450's at a COAL of 2.250 gave me an average of 2459 fps. Factory ammo averaged 2460 when measured. These loads, like factory, shoot under MOA when I do my part.

This is not the norm. If you do a general search here on the SST, you will find more often than not, people can not get them to group under an inch, whereas the ELD Black ammo is the goto for accuracy.
