Open Carry? - PrecisionFirearms - 10-19-2015
Open Carry is State Protected here in Wide Wonder West Virginia. I am small frame person and barely weigh 145 lbs. Concealed carry with a Pistol that fits my hand is very hard to do comfortably. I open carry. Best advice is dress accordingly, Act accordingly! Avoid getting into shouting matches, swearing, drinking, etc. Dress respectfully. I personally wear 5.11 Tactical Clothes all the time. About the only time I don't is to Church. I have been carrying a FN FNS9 for about 2 years now every day pretty much every where I go. Folks never bother me, even L/E just nod and walk right past me. Little Kids though, they stare and say "he's got a gun", I just smile that them and act normal. They just learned that gun doesn't mean bad.

I had never heard of Alien (or at least it never caught my attention if they have advertised in my magazines), but lo and behold, I saw (or became aware of) their ad in the September issue of American Rifleman (which I am just getting around to reading) over the weekend. Looks interesting - glad I read your mention of the brand bwaites, or I would likely have overlooked them again.

UPDATE: I had a customer come to my office last Friday and he was open carry! I remarked to him that I had just noted on a forum that I had only seen one other person in Charlotte carrying open in 35 years. He said he had been doing it for about two years but that he is selective where he carries open. He said he avoids "busy" places" like the mall and grocery stores. But I agree with Customcutter in trying to avoid being the primary target. If a criminal is intent on shooting one or more people and he is not totally incapable of rational thought, he is likely to want to take out the threat most likely to thwart his plans - and spotting another guy with a gun, would try to shoot him first. I'd rather have the extra time to be able to asses a situation and have the drop on him rather than the other way around, so I'll keep concealed.

The converse may also be true....seeing an open carrier may make him decide to not start at all!

Seeing several rounds from concealed carriers impact his face will help him with any further decision making processes. There's a certain fear of the unknown. Where I live, everybody that has half a brain cell left figures that most people around here are armed, many heavily armed. We're polite, will go out of our way to take care of you if in need, but you might want to pick another State if crime is your way of making a living.
You can carry concealed in schools in Utah, and many trainers offer free courses for teachers and school employees. The State Legislature is comprised of 85% Utah CFP holders, and one of the State senators, an older Marine veteran, has trained most of them.
I would emphasize safety again when dealing with firearms. I witnessed countless safety violations with some other patrons of a range where we were conducting training last weekend, and a 10yr-old boy was needlessly killed the weekend before that out hunting with his family when one of his hunting companions was removing a rifle from an ATV, and fired the rifle, striking the boy and killing him.
ALWAYS keep a firearms pointed in a SAFE DIRECTION.
ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
ALWAYS keep a gun unloaded until ready to use.
Be Aware of your backstop, target, what's around it, and the ballistic potential of your cartridge/firearm system.
After watching some guys flag each other to the back of the head, lower back, and general cavalier handling of handguns at the range, we encountered a family who were not wearing any eye protection in the Cowboy town, to include an unattended 3yr-old boy. They were blasting away at the large steel targets in the bays, some of which are only 7yds away, and one boy was hit in the face with a ricochet within .5 seconds of me telling them they needed eye pro.
"Oh, he'll be fine." Plink, "Ahhhhhhhh!"
I was flagged to the face and chest immediately after that by one of the kids holding a loaded rifle as I attempted to equip the family with all of my extra eye pro.
Later on, they asked us to stop shooting, because....
"We're missing a kid!"
The little 3yr-old had wandered off, and could not be located. After a frantic search, he was found inside one of the shooting bays alone, sitting on top of the mock-up horse with saddle. They then moved on to the restricted LE range and shot out one of the windows. You can't make this stuff up, and I have several witnesses, one of whom is a forum member. It was madness.
What does this have to do with open or concealed carry? If you haven't received an NRA course on firearms safety, I strongly advise that you do so. They are substantially different than the substandard safety training we received in the military, with priorities on what order you ALWAYS do certain things, started with safe direction. Most courses have taught to ensure a gun is unloaded, which often leads to some moron determining that condition by pulling the trigger, and people that aren't gun educated don't know exactly what unloaded means, or how to determine it.

I too have witnessed un believable safety violations at our shooting range and in the field. Like driving on our streets there are safe defensive drivers and there are irresponsible drivers. I also encourage everyone who carries to get quality training and compete in a shooting sport like USPSA. With quality training and competition, safety is practiced over and over so safe firearm handling becomes ingrained and automatic. Having OCD when it comes to firearm safety is not a bad thing. I live in NV where open carry is ok. I say Ok because theres not law against it. As long as you know the rules you are fine, Signs hold no weight of law and business can only ask you to leave and if you fail to comply you can be tresspassed. "public" buildings (defined as government buildings open to the public) have no right to trespass you. For us Nevadans who don't like going anywhere unarmed we are forced to open carry in public buildings because they can regulate the concealed carry of firearms with a metal detector or signs at each entrance, but they cannot regulate open carry.
There is always opencarry.org if you want alot more info, almost every state has a group or two that meets up for open carry lunches and such.

I was shooting my AR 223 Sunday @ 300 yards and the only one on the range. The line is about 50 yards wide and I was set up on the right end. I flipped on the flashing lights (which are located about every 20 feet along the range), meaning the range was COLD, and went down range in my mini-van (not a small car) to reset some targets. I left my hearing protection on because I was the only shooter (Which I won't EVER do again) and while I heard some muffled gun shots, I didn't think anything of it, since we have pistol bays which are located along the left side of the rifle range on the other side of the berm which runs down the 300 yards of the range. When I got back, I noticed a group on the far left of the line and thought ,"hmm, they got set up fast" and asked them if they were ready to go live and they said yes. Then the safety range officer came over from the adjacent pistol range and asked me if I realized they had been shooting when the lights were on and had I been downrange? I went pale as I realized that they were shooting toward me when I was down range! Turns out they were new members and had just rushed up to get some sighting in shots in before the range closed and didn't bother to pay attention to the flashing lights or even look down range to check if it was clear or wonder where the shooter was who had a bench full of gear at the other end of the range. We have pretty rigorous safety training and new members must be shadowed by another member for six months before they are allowed to shoot on their own; this group broke MANY protocols and rules and there is a big sign with most of them not 8 feet in front of the bench where they were shooting. Still, there are some idiots who are just extremely careless.

We had the same thing happen to another member at our range. The culprit's membership was terminated on the spot. The care free days of going to the range without concern of other members is long gone. I try to shoot with a family member or friend so one of us can stay behind and keep an eye on any problems at the benches while the other works on targets. Glad to here you only got a scare.

I am having to write up my story and report it to our range board, since this was a serious infraction. The feedback I get is that the other member (a new member) has a number of inconsistencies in his version, and the Range officers corroborate mine as far as my safety procedures they observed that day. It's likely the new member will be terminated if he doesn't come clean. But the training procedures will likely become more strict (which they should be for newbies). Our club is 102 years old and there was NOTHING for miles around when it was originally built. Now there are subdivisions on all sides of it and we can't risk the chance of a stray bullet getting off the range property. The last known instances (where there was a complaint lodged) was when the Police were using the range to practice! At my other range yesterday, there was a member I didn't recognize shooting a revolver and he did like I have seen many revolver shooters do - he rotated the barrel up at a 45 degree angle while cocking it and had his finger in the trigger guard while he lowered it to complete the hammer cocking sequence and aim. I had to mention to him his unsafe way of cocking his revolver and he didn't even realize it. I admit that even when removing my carry pistol at the end of the day, I sometimes sweep another part of my body - it's just so easy sometimes to get a little sloppy.

Our county has a private range for their Sheriffs department's training. The city police were also allowed to use the county range for their training until the Sheriffs department had two separate firearm injuries. The last accident occurred when a Sheriff's dept. instructor accidentally shot one of his students resulting in a large law suit and settlement. Since then the counties insurance wouldn't allow the city police department to train at their range so they now train at our range. Today every member must go on line and pass a regulation and safety test to be admitted. This way no member can claim ignorance if they violate any safety procedures. Our range manager is a close friend of mine and is very strict with range violations. He is rightfully concerned with lawsuits which could terminate the insurance and result in the closure of our shooting range not to mention a tragic accident.

The police are asking people who have the Right to open carry not to do that during the Republican convention. I think the police are right..its foolish to go looking for trouble. Even when your are within your Constitutional Rights.
Even when Amnesty International is sending monitors to make sure that other people are allowed to exercise their 1st Amendment Rights...Life is unfair, and when your are armed I believe you should go out of your way to avoid trouble

I go out of my way for no man or no threat! The beauty of our freedoms and our 2nd Amendment is that I don't have to allow others to intimidate me.
There's a big difference in slinging your AR15 to get some attention and holstering a 45acp XDm on your hip.
I do agree that the LEOs have enough on their plates without someone adding to the protest with an AR15 slung on their shoulder.

I have had a CCW permit since available in Texas. The open carry removes the problem of violation for silhouetting the weapon.
If I am in a position to need the 1911, I had rather Noone know that I have it until it is in use.
Certainly in situatons like Cleveland, open carry is a "right" that should be tempered by common sense

With 35 posts on open carry, it seems that almost all the major points have been made. Nonetheless I feel compelled to comment.
Open carry is not the smartest choice for most situations beyond reminding all parties that is is legal and safe. Beyond that, open carry is a magnet for attention that most would prefer to avoid.
1) One will have more conversations with law enforcement officials. Some of us are comfortable having thse conversations but remember these conversations burn up time they need for other duties.
2) The open carry individual is the first target a shooter will serivce if he or he is smart. Most of us do not want to be targets!

Since cops have shot any number of unarmed individuals who were just imagined to have a gun, consider the danger to private citizens who actually have a firearm.........especially after Dallas and Baton Rouge.

At this point, I would hope every legitimate gun owner in America has reached the point where they find it in their heart to do EVERYTHING they can to make the job of our LEO's as easy as possible! There are bad cops, just like there are bad gun owners, and bad men among us. However, the VAST majority of cops are trying to do an incredibly difficult job against incredible odds. We should be doing everything we can to assist them.
