a real long shot - LRRPF52 - 08-12-2011 appleseed-kdc Wrote:FYI... Interesting article indeed. Note the velocities he was launching some very spear-like projectiles with... "The 80gr Amax are running 2825ish fps. The 75gr Amax 2950ish fps." Those are way higher BC projectiles at way higher velocities than you will get with any comparable bullet through the Grendel. He was using a custom .223 bench gun with an amazingly-accurate barrel, which he claimed shot below 1/8th MOA at 200yds, which is what the bench crowd looks for in a good pipe. Also notice the weather constraints that severely limited his firing strings. Most people that get into the Grendel are doing so for some practical purpose. Since the weather is usually practically not practical, our 1st-round or ethical hit distances are much more prudent. It is what it is. That being said, it might be fun for strictly academic purposes to sit around and wait for a perfect wind condition to get rounds on target at 1600yds. For those that need to make practical shots in given wind conditions, with time-critical windows of opportunity, there won't be any laughing either way, just shots at much shorter distances...like 400-700yds, with the occasional folks that like to shoot at 800+ in mild wind conditions. The biggest advantage one will gain from such a pursuit will be in watching wind conditions, and seeing their effects on projectiles at extreme distances. To each is own as to how they spend their time. Interesting to see the results. a real long shot - bwaites - 08-12-2011 Actually the 80 grain AMAX has only a .453 BC and the 75 grain a .435. A long tube Grendel will pump the 123 AMAX/Sierra/Lapua out at around 2750 FPS. With their BC's, the drop and drift numbers are within an MOA or two, with the drop advantage to the .224 and the drift advantage to the 6.5. He was using a rifle that would be hard to match with a Grendel AR, though, with a barrel that was well proven to give exceptional accuracy. I would like to see the Grendel Panda put together by Bob Stokes shoot some hot loads at that range though!

Don't recall hitting the steel, but it was fun to try for a couple cylinders to see where the slugs splashed into the berm.Been there, done that -- rocks at long distance with a .44. Lot's of fun! a real long shot - LRS_Ranger - 08-14-2011 Reading this thread, it inspires me to shoot at the 1400 yard line next time I go out to the spot. I have really good results on a 12 inch steel at 950 yards; I'll be interested to see what happens at 1400. I imagine I'll have to shoot a sighter and then follow up before the wind changes... a real long shot - LRRPF52 - 08-15-2011 bwaites Wrote:Actually the 80 grain AMAX has only a .453 BC and the 75 grain a .435. The listed BC's for 123 AMAX aren't the same at such low velocities out of the Grendel, and are probably higher on the .224 AMAX's at those velocities out of the bolt gun. I guess it's basically an academic argument, because I probably won't be attempting any shots with a Grendel past 1k. With my current set-up in the 16", I won't feel comfortable shooting past 600, unless the wind is dead or slow and predictable. a real long shot - MrSurgicalPrecision - 08-16-2011 This thread gets me to thinking about some GS customs single loaded into my 24" Grendel barrel. HMMMM? a real long shot - PumpActionJackson - 08-16-2011 you wont do it.......
a real long shot - jwilson1985 - 08-22-2011 mrsurgical ive also been thinking about some of the gs bullets..... i havent had a chance to get out to my intended distance yet ...done 1k a few times just havent had a good spotter with me and we have been busy following alot of the 3g guys we sponsor. im on work comp so its not like i dont have the time lol ,just hope to at least try b4 my surgery

At that distance I'm only interested in: 7WSM 7mmRemMag 300 WSM 300 WinMag 338 LapuaMag a real long shot - jwilson1985 - 10-31-2011 true but it can be done ,though i was already beat to it with a 1600yard shot with a 24" grendel a real long shot - oxn316 - 10-31-2011 any links, i was thinking about shimming my scope a little more. lol 1200 is all i can get to right now. a real long shot - jwilson1985 - 10-31-2011 i like the scope rimgs but they r high ...just google moa rail or rings a real long shot - LRRPF52 - 10-31-2011 oxn316 Wrote:any links, i was thinking about shimming my scope a little more. lol 1200 is all i can get to right now. When you start pushing out that far on a regular basis, it's time to invest in a high-end optic with plenty of elevation travel, even with an MOA base. You'll want more than 85 MOA plus a 20 MOA base to start playing in that ball park. Basically, look at Vortex Razor HD, NightForce, & USO for starters, then get into S&B or Premier. The glass quality will also really help with target resolution and aiming accurately. It's serious coin, but shooting at those distances reliably is what it is. DTA makes different MOA cant, 1-piece bases. a real long shot - oxn316 - 10-31-2011 LRRPF52 Wrote:When you start pushing out that far on a regular basis, it's time to invest in a high-end optic with plenty of elevation travel, even with an MOA base. Im running a viper scope, so i think i will stay at 1200 for a while. maybe a rem 260 and a NF when the funds allow for the longer stuff. a real long shot - yb182z - 11-09-2011 I know this may not be news, but practice, practice, practice. Get to know your rifle. When I was a kid, I would spend every summer at my cousin's farm. His neighbor had horses- and a field with lots of groundhogs. Once or twice a week we would take his Marlin .22LR and head over to his neighbor's house. His neighbor would give us a bunch of .22 rounds and pay us for each groundhog killed- and buy us pizza for lunch. My cousin and I would spend hours shooting; not just groundhogs, however. We would set up targets from probably 25 feet out to the end of the pasture. One day we took aim at the old defunct fire whistle that had to be 500-600 yards away (maybe more) at the bottom of a ravine. We must have shot at that thing for 2 or 3 days before we hit it. But once we started hitting it, we were able to do it about 60% of the time. Moral of the story- Know your rifle and practice. a real long shot - jwilson1985 - 11-10-2011 yes that and know what you can do,thats why it still amazes me when people say the grendel is no more the a 600-700 yard cartridge.1 of 2 things they dont have enough trigger time behind it and are mad when the cant hit past that or the have read to many b.s statements on forums. i base all my info off of what i have personally seen,or done...Point the 762x51/308 has worse ballistics and velocity, then the grendel yet the military still uses and considers it a 1000 yard cartridge.point being as you stated know your own limits a real long shot - jessegibson1978 - 01-04-2012 You can use a canted base and Burris rings with the plastic inserts to gain around 40 moa total. I think that most range limitations people are referring to are from energy figures and velocity to get reliable bullet expansion. However it sure would be fun to try at a mile. a real long shot - LR1955 - 01-05-2012 jwilson1985 Wrote:yes that and know what you can do,thats why it still amazes me when people say the grendel is no more the a 600-700 yard cartridge.1 of 2 things they dont have enough trigger time behind it and are mad when the cant hit past that or the have read to many b.s statements on forums. i base all my info off of what i have personally seen,or done...Point the 762x51/308 has worse ballistics and velocity, then the grendel yet the military still uses and considers it a 1000 yard cartridge.point being as you stated know your own limits JW: How about a description of your test? Things like target size, rifles used, sighting systems, environmental conditions, ammunition used (both 6.5 and .30 caliber), controls used, statistical analysis, etc. I am also sure that Stan is interested to see how you define a service grade Grendel and particularly service grade ammunition. LR1955 a real long shot - acelungger - 01-21-2012 Hey JW, If you will wait untill it gets warmer, since I live in S.E.
