Light MG such as the M249 SAW that fires the 5.56x45? If we replace that with the 6.5mm GPC would that not be better?

However, the .338 LWMMG is really a niche weapon, with ammo much too heavy for the MMG/GPMG role, and lacking the range of a .50 HMG and destructive capability of a 40mm GMG. It'd be nice to have for a few dismounted infantry scenarios, and for arming some very lightweight vehicles, but it's poorly suited for general purpose use.

Not that I've heard. The original loading was the MK248 Mod 0 which consisted of a 190 grain SMK fired at 3,000 fps. This was recently replaced by the MK248 Mod 1 which fires a 220 grain SMK at 2,850 fps, which generates an average chamber pressure of 68,100 psi (with a maximum north of 70,000).

Actually the trajectory out to 1,500 metres is said to be pretty much the same as the .50 BMG ball (special sniper loadings of the .50 with low-drag bullets can beat this easily, of course, but they don't fire those from MGs) so I suspect that the effective range isn't that different, in terms of accuracy and dispersion. The hitting power is a lot less, though, of course, and it's too small to have bullets like the MK211 SAPHEI.
