True, I've seen barrels that won't shoot accurately until fouled as well. But those same barrels will then degrade as the fouling accumulates.
The course of fire I shoot most often is called the Regional Match Course of Fire which is 88 shots, 80 shots for record and two sighters for each of the four stages. Most good barrels will shoot this many shots with very good accuracy. But even really good barrels will degrade after a few hundred shots. I've seen accuracy taper off after 120 shots with some barrels and others that maintain good accuracy through 250 or so shots.
One of the big matches we hold, awards a cold bore zero challenge coin, for anyone who shoots and X for the first shot of the day, and in the winter we start at 600 yards. It isn't uncommon for some of the competitors to find ways to fire a few fouling shots before the match starts even if it means pulling over and dumping a few into the ditch along side the road.
Luckily for me, my current Kreiger barrel will put the first one in the X and the 22nd one as well, as long as I do my part and dope the conditions accurately.
