Problems with Wolf Ammo - Bwild97 - 03-25-2012

You might try a chamber cleaning kit, if you don't already have one; there may be carbon deposits in the chamber causing the tight fit. My rifle carbon'd up real fast with the first box of ammo shot through it.

Problems with Wolf Ammo - Captk - 03-25-2012

The rifle has less then 100 rnds through it. I'll clean the chamber and see if that works. I didn't notice and markings on the brass, they all looked clean. I will need to get a chamber cleaning kit.
Thanks, Ken

Do you have a case gage you can measure your fired brass with? It should be able to tell you if your head space is within specs.

Problems with Wolf Ammo - Captk - 03-25-2012

I do not have a case gauge.
I did rustle up a chamber brush and cleaned the chamber.
I'll try this again next weekend.
I'm wondering if when the round picked up from the mag is it jamming the case in the chamber? Why would the first 8 rounds fire with no issues then almost every round either FTE or get stuck in the chamber?

If you want to send me a few pieces of your fired brass I can check them in mine.

Problems with Wolf Ammo - LRRPF52 - 03-25-2012

We already established that your fired case necks are .300"-.302".

What barrel length, 20"
Gas system length,
Buffer type/weight,
Bolt carrier weight,
And receiver extension tube length(buffer tube-carbine or rifle)

....do you have?

Your symptoms can be caused by a lot of things:

Gas system could be over-dwelt/fast-gassed
Gas system could be under-dwelt/fast-gassed
Gas block might not be installed properly
Chamber could be really rough
Extractor could have too much or too little spring tension

Thank you for the offer. Would you be able to check headspace using my brass in your rifle?

Ken

What barrel length, 19"
Gas system length, Rifle
Buffer type/weight, RRA Standard A2 stock set
Bolt carrier weight, Not sure
And receiver extension tube length(buffer tube-carbine or rifle) Rifle

Chamber could be really rough Chamber looks smooth
Extractor could have too much or too little spring tension Tension seems OK

Ken

I'd check them on my Wilson case gage.

If there is an AR15 carrier in there, you will want an M16 carrier. The 5.2 oz. rifle buffer should be plenty for you. Check to make sure you have a rifle-length recoil spring, and not a carbine in there. Here are some spring length specs:

TECHNICAL MANUAL
ARMY NO. 9-1005-319-23&P
AIR FORCE TO 11W3-5-5-42

RIFLE: 11 3/4 Inches (29 85 cm) minimum to 13 1./2 inches (34 29 cm)maximum

CARBINE: 10 1/16 inches (25.56 cm) minimum to 11 1/4 inches (28.58 cm) maximum.

I built the lower with a new in package RRA A2 rifle Stock set. I double checked the barrel, it's 19" long. Is there an easy way to determine AR15 vs M16 carrier?

It has an Enhanced AR15 carrier. Buffer spring is 12 3/4".

I have some extra power hammer springs, I could put one in if that would be any help.

Problems with Wolf Ammo - LRRPF52 - 03-25-2012

Get an M16 carrier. The extra power hammer spring will only make your trigger pull heavier, and accuracy would likely suffer. Did you have any failure to activate primers? The hammer spring does fight the rearward movement of the BCG, but should not be used to time your system.

I'm thinking that adjustable gas block and an M16 carrier will help you, since it sounds like your gas port is pretty large. A fast-cycling bolt is especially weird for Nebraska this time of year. Since you'll be dealing with major temp shifts over the year, the adjustable gas block might be of even more help for finding a sweet zone for your loads.

Problems with Wolf Ammo - Captk - 03-25-2012

No issues with primer strikes. I don't have an adjustable gas block, are you suggesting I get 1? I'll look for an M16 carrier, is the thought here the heaver carrier will slow down the cycling? I am in NY, not Nebraska, maybe you are mixing me up with the post form Nebraska?
This is turning into more then I might want to deal with. Need to decide if I want to sell the upper and ammo and move on or try to fix it. I'm looking around for an M16 carrier, hopefully that will fix the problem.
Thanks, Ken

I was looking for an M16 bolt and came across this. Adds weight to the existing carrier. Any one ever use one?

I do not own one myself but I one of my shooting buddies has one in his LMT .308. He speaks highly of it.

You could get the Tubbs weight, or a new M16 carrier for close to the same price. Yes, the idea is to provide more resistance with mass/weight to the increased gas pressure, especially if it has a large gas port.

Problems with Wolf Ammo - Captk - 03-28-2012

I ordered a Tubbs weight, it seems like it would add more weight and give mne the ability to vary the weight. I hope this works.
Thanks for all of the help, I'll try this Saturday. I did thoroughly clean the chamber and bolt.
Thanks, Ken

Problems with Wolf Ammo - Captk - 03-31-2012

Took the rifle out today with the Tubbs weight installed. I had to remove a small amount of material off the bolt carrier for it to fit. I started with wolf ammo, 1 round, 2 rounds, 3 rounds, 4 rounds, adding 1 round to the mag. I did have 1 problem with the round chambering but a slight pull on the charging handle and the rounds chambers. No issues with extraction until I had put 30 rounds through. Then I was right back to where I was last week with every round getting stuck in the chamber, this was with both the wolf and hornady ammo. I no longer feel this is an ammo issue. The first 30 or so rounds all fired and extracted fine. Any suggestions? It seems the chamber is getting quite dirty and causing the problem. I don't want an upper that can only go 20 - 30 rnds then malfunctions.
