Upper Question - A5BLASTER - 06-07-2021

BVickery1974 Wrote:Barrel: 16" Lilja
Upper: Aero M4E1 (ordered blem)
Gas Block: Sentry
BCG: Maxim

That is my plans so far.

I have heard good trigger, what will be a good one to pair with it?

Ssa-e anything else is rack grade lol

Upper Question - Klem - 06-07-2021

Ssae

Upper Question - BVickery1974 - 06-07-2021

Thought so.

So updated 6.5 Build:

Upper - Aero M4E1 w/o Forward Assist
Barrel - 16" Lilja w/ Mid-Length Gas System
Gasblock - .750 SLR Sentry Adj. GB
BCG: Maxim
Rail: Aero Enhanced Handguards Gen 2 (will allow use of the Sentry)
Muzzle Device: Leaning towards VG6 Gamma

Lower: Aero M4E1
LPK: Geissele LPK
Trigger: Geissele SSA-E (will start with basic trigger, then add in before scope)
Buffer: A5 Buffer kit with A5H1 buffer
Stock: B5 Sopmod
Grip: BCM Gunfighter Mod 3
Optics: May throw red dot on for now and save for something like a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16X44MM FFP RIFLE SCOPE

Feedback, comments, and most importantly, anything I am missing?

Upper Question - Lastrites - 06-07-2021

Triggers are sort of personal, lol but $87 for the LaRue Tactical Mbs2 is a very nice trigger for a great price.

Upper Question - StoneHendge - 06-07-2021

Alert the media! I agree with both A5 and Klem on something. SSAE.

Upper Question - Growler - 06-08-2021

montana Wrote:Dimpling can have accuracy issues if the set screw is tightened down too tight. 20 inch pounds is recommended with the set screw in the dimple, "with this type of gas block" instead of the standard 25" pounds.. Clamp type is preferable if accuracy is paramount...

Would be interested in direct observations on gas block type affecting accuracy. It makes sense—a setscrew is a stress concentration, which could localize and increase barrel deformation as more of a point effect than the area of a clamp type.

Has anyone had direct experience with improved accuracy with the same barrel by changing from a dimpled set screw gas block to a clamp on gas block?

I haven’t used a dimpled gas block yet, but I picked up the SLR jig, as that seems to provide the most repeatable method to accurately locate a dimple available to the end user.

Upper Question - StoneHendge - 06-08-2021

Growler, I don't think it can be measured, but intuitively, a set screw can affect drift of zero if the force of the screw on the barrel changes (loosens) over time. That's the primary reason I stay away from them, as well as handguard mounting systems that place direct or indirect force on the barrel.

Upper Question - Zeneffect - 06-08-2021

Larue mbt2s. Best trigger for the money. If you can spend more high speed national match or timney calvin elite... be careful with the timney as it has a 1.5lb break that is both awesome and potentially dangerous if you have bad habits.

A real world study would be good. Talking to many smiths, shooters, etc, the problem also occurs with pinned blocks too. Some people have a habit of dimpling their barrels too deep and then cranking on the set screw, "which has negative implications on the bore itself" along with accuracy.

I only used the clamp type blocks for my Grendel builds and precision directed AR builds..

The SLR jig is a great jig to keep the gas ports concentric to each other. I still use a bore guide to verify before drilling, but it has always been spot on.. On a side note, you will know which rifle barrel makers have the toughest steel when dimpling. D.D. HFB has the hardest I have tried so far..

I think you have a great build planned there. I like using BCM upper receivers for a super tight barrel-to-receiver fit, but it's not absolutely required. You can occasionally find the blemished ones on sale to save a little money.

Triggers are entirely subjective, but here is my take:
1. Geissele makes excellent triggers. If you're going to spend Geissele money, get the SSA-E over the regular SSA.
2. LaRue MBT-2S triggers are pretty comparable to the Geissele SSA, but significantly less expensive. They are my favorite value for general purpose rifles. I sold my SSA to buy 2 MBT-2S triggers. And then I bought some more. At under $100, they're hard to beat. Skip the MBT-1S single stage.
3. Hot take: TriggerTech might make the best triggers for the money. After shooting my hunting buddy's R700 with TriggerTech, I picked up their Competitive 3.5 lb trigger for my Mk12 and it has been a revelation. It's called a 2-stage, but the first stage is so short, it might as well be a single stage, and the action is so smooth that it feels even lighter than advertised. It breaks like a tuned 1911 trigger and is a dream to use. I liked it so much that I just ordered a TT Adjustable for my 6.5 Creedmoor AR and I can't wait to test it out.

Upper Question - BVickery1974 - 06-09-2021

Need to check in on this. May pick up the larue to start and if needed move over to my other ar and put in the geisselle.

Upper Question - BVickery1974 - 06-11-2021

As I order my stuff, and now even more excited in that I can pay for day use at the local 1200yd range, I am curious on whether adjustable gas block is way to go or normal. I do eventually plan on running it suppressed, especially while hog hunting. I really would like to dial in the rifle and seems Adj. would be the way to go.

Got my Larue on backorder right now.

Upper Question - BVickery1974 - 06-17-2021

She is starting to come together. I just have her loosely assembled, will be going over to a friends hose who has the tools and equipment to do this properly.

Still waiting on Aero Enhanced Handguards VG65 Gamma and Larue Straight Bow trigger. I will probably grab an SSA-E during black friday.

Upper Question - NightStalker - 06-19-2021

Think the Criterion barrel is an excellent choice. I’ve always believed accuracy starts with the barrel and build around it

Upper Question - BVickery1974 - 06-19-2021

Actually got the Lilja 16" from SIgma Six arms.

Upper Question - BVickery1974 - 06-21-2021

Ok, think I may have taken the wrong muzzle attachment. I got the vg6 Gamma. Though, thinking about uses (IE, Hog hunting) is the Epsilon better since it does have the flash reduction. Will be hunting hogs in low light conditions at times.

Upper Question - PNWTargets - 06-25-2021

I have changed all my rifles to OSS flash hiders. I do have OSS cans to. Check them out

Haven't settled on a suppressor, but may go either YHM Resonator 2 or Sandman-S so staying away from the QD stuff for suppressors. I do like the OSS for AK's though. But I am in a holding pattern since there is a big push to make them illegal with NO grandfathering.
