Mel -

For your game, you're way beyond the run of the mill rack barrel. You should absolutely be checking out PF and looking at Krieger, Lilja, and Bartlein. All 3 are far beyond what you're looking at money wise, but you're far beyond the envelope of "typical" or rack Grendel game. You'll be very disappointed with anything Stoner or BCA for sure. I say that with a bit of chasing experience of my own. You're welcome to avoid my input, it'd be expensive as far as AR barrels go. You're just chasing the wind though, without at least giving yourself the very best equipment you can muster.

You'll spend it eventually, start up front with the pain, the fun comes quicker and lasts longer.

Good luck.

I've read that in Grendel, you just won't gain much in the way of velocity beyond 24, which is already extremely rare. Not many of them get built, because they don't do much more than the 20s. In your case though, that extra FPS would absolutely be worth the investment I think. It'd be up to you.

I can tell you, a heavy long barrel changes the game. It's like shooting a missile rather than a rifle. Harder to explain than that. The recoil impulse becomes more linear, more of a ting than a bang... hard to explain.

A good - fantastic - brake would be well worth the investment. A Fat bastard or similar maybe... Hellfire? IDK...

You'd want the rest SOLID... it's expensive to build this right. Huge billet receiver, maybe a DPMS slick side would be of good use though too... Definitely a good bi-pod, ATLAS or better.

Jewel trigger. Light break no take up. Light as in oz, not lbs...

Finally, LAPUA brass. You'll thank yourself when you start pushing your loads. Which you should do with an absolute abundance of caution, this isn't a SOCOM...

IDK man, I'm intrigued. You're already proving the push, and putting good work out. Now, you just need to build the amazing stick and push. Unfortunately, this is where the effort to do so becomes exponentially more consuming... time and money. Way more investment for sure.

Good luck! You're obviously enjoying yourself, and are proving it to work. I say go for it all.

ive been doing some reading and research i deffinatly want to build it just comming up with a parts list atm , this is going to happen soon though .
i had 0 plans to run a brake on this my suppressor is spoiling me alot it is so nice not to have to have ear plugs/protection everytime i pick my rifle up and my form 1 can has proven itself to be just as accurate as without the can , and i still have an ultra in jail

f1 has some really nice upper/lower sets id love to use for this but i dont think this is the pbuild for one of those sets lol , if i can find a nice side charging upper i can use for this thats prolly what ill end up going with

You just described what it feels like to shoot my CZ varmint grendel.

I'm useing the hypertap brake on that rifle. Super effective and everyone next to me hates it lol.

I wish I had the altitude Mel has, would love to see what my 129 ablr handload would do at 2k.

Mel you need a spotter? Lol.

haha i do actually , i gave up on trying to get mine out to spot me at 2k and thats why i was going to attempt it last night on my own until scope issues popped up.
only brake ive ever used was the 6.5 caliber brake i stole off my creedmoor that sucker works good but omfg is it loud

Suppressor does similar things, but it changes the experience. There's something great about a loud and proud bark and a following impact hundreds of yards away.

ar stoner 24" / jse 22" bull barrel ? - mel - 06-13-2020

man so after work today ive been searching for some billet side charging uppers and anything worthwhile is out of stock , on a side note made myself a brass anealing fixture/setup while i had some downtime at work

also if anyon is aware of a cheap but decent 19.25 handguard preferably keymod for my 20" plz let me know

i give up searching for parts tonight ima load up and go pest hunting lol

ar stoner 24" / jse 22" bull barrel ? - Kswhitetails - 06-13-2020

Hit up Mark over at PF. Samurai Arms makes them that long. Even 20"

Turns out it's Mlok only. Dont know if he'd do 19.25, or keymod.

Also, found out he has HB Samurai barrels out to 24" in Bull configuration. These are $250, and I believe are Criterion. Could be wrong on that, thats what I remember, and am probably mixing things form multiple posts.

I'm excited for you, this looks fun.

ar stoner 24" / jse 22" bull barrel ? - mel - 06-13-2020

I'm packing it in for the night didn't expect to burn threw ammo tonight only brought out 10 rounds .... 9 critters down dbl tapped one or it would have been 10 . Prolly had enough time left to get 10 more

I'll throw up some vids when I get home

Sorry for the diversion, but with all the mass of the super long barrels discussed, what does a muzzle brake bring to the table? Serious question, all I know about brakes is tinnitus. I’d rather give my money to TBAC than a hearing aid company.

ar stoner 24" / jse 22" bull barrel ? - Kswhitetails - 06-13-2020

The brake at that point is about making recoil linear and almost non existent. At the bullet weight and velocity Mel is running things, it becomes more important than we would usually tend to discuss here. Mel has proven he's capable, and willing to push the envelopes, in my opinion. A long HB Grendel with no brake would be incomplete in my mind, the same way an ELR rifle on a bigger scale is, and for the same reasons. The suppressor would surely help here, but it adds a new dynamic set of variables to the system, and makes me worry about too much leverage on the barrel for an AR15 upper. Especially a Stainless and Inconnel can like my own. His I think are aluminum - and Titanium to come...

Really though, in the semi-auto, there's less to be gained from a brake. However, I still personally would forego the suppressor for the brake. It'd clean up the end of the rifle, and let you tune the harmonic to a T. That's harder to do without a direct thread suppressor. I'm not sure what Mel has planned there, I'm assuming a QD, but could be wrong.

mines aluminum, stainless and ti, it is direct thread i was going to do a QD but decided against it for the form 1 can im not against running a brake and im sure ill be going back and forth when shooting, may even have to put in another form 1 and do an all ti can for this

I got a billet side charging upper from PF. The bore through this receiver is tight... had to thermal fit my Wilson Combat 20" barrel.

I don't remember where it is on the site. I found it a few months ago & bookmarked it. Back when I was looking for side charging uppers for my Grendel I found some left side uppers but I can't recall who made them or where I found them. I had them bookmarked as well but deleted them when I decided to get the one from PF. Besides, all the left side uppers were out of stock when I was doing my search. I started my search with "side charge AR 15 upper receivers" on google...

BCA also has a right side upper. I went with the PF upper because I can use a standard AR charging handle if by some chance something went wrong (lost or broke) with the charging handle on the BCG.

Another left handed side charging upper:

https://www.gibbzarms.com/product/g4-left-handed-side-charging-upper-receiver-enlarged-ejection-port/

Disclaimer-I have zero experience with this product, but just noticed it was in stock. Possibly a good option for a suppressed build or a pistol.

ar stoner 24" / jse 22" bull barrel ? - Rosecrans1 - 06-14-2020

Mel, you may or may not get the significant increases in MV with a 28" barrel on your bolt rifle. The increase in the barrel length still acts as additional chamber area before the bullet exits the muzzle. Your gas pressures are diminishing after that initial spike. I would guess you hit a point of diminished returns though it may or may not be at that barrel length. It may also increase your chamber pressures too. Just be careful out there!

Just thinking............with a Magnetospeed at the end of a 28" barrel, from a distance, people will think you're a civil war reenactor! Rolleyes

ar stoner 24" / jse 22" bull barrel ? - muvef - 06-14-2020

Stay away from JSE barrels. They have a long throat, type 1 bolt (mine cracked and the replacement was junk) and the chamber isn't SAAMI spec.
