Broken 6mmAR Bolt - lazyengineer - 05-01-2019 SHORT-N-SASSY Wrote:Great idea ! But, let's go the route: Interesting. One of the appeals of the Grendel is that it runs on a standard AR; only thing different is BBL, bolt, and magazine (semi-optional on mag even). Changing out upper and lower receivers and BCG, all to satisfy a larger frame system, doesn't have the same curb appeal to me. I have a 6.5 Creedmoor AR10 for when I'm willing to trade convenient weight for power performance. My own Grendel goals are to go as far in the other direction; with as small and light weight and compact a package as mechanically (and legally) possible. So to me, switching up to a "medium frame" specialty receiver set, is not something I'm likely to ever do. Trade off is I can't push the pressures beyond 52k. I would have been more interested if they figured out a way to go half-way in between and still squeeze a slightly bigger diameter beefier bolt into standard BCG and receiver set. Maybe that can't be done, but that would be more interesting to me. THAT'S the appeal of the Grendel on the AR15 frame... It doesn't do anything for me if you have to add a couple pounds with the ANVIL based rifle....might as well build off the 308 case then. Now if someone from this board had a spare ar10 bolt laying around. They can send it to me and I can take some measurements and see if it would be possible to machine it down to fit a standard ar15 bcg. I built a 7lb 16" 308 AR10, it weighs less than my Grendel with a CF barrel. The AR10 shoots amazingly well too. Once you take take the Grendel cartridge out of the AR15 platform it loses most of it's appeal. Broken 6mmAR Bolt - SHORT-N-SASSY - 05-03-2019 Under the heading, What our sport shooting world needs is a lightweight 6.5mm Grendel CMMG MkW ANVIL rifle, I today sent the following email to Jeff Overstreet, CMMG Inc. : ![]() ![]() ![]() Broken 6mmAR Bolt - Msalm - 05-03-2019 I ‘tried’ with a 338 Federal. Turned the contour down, light stock and forearm, and it was still heavy....and bulky. Not near as nice as a 20” Grendel with carbon fft and ace skeletal stock. Broken 6mmAR Bolt - A5BLASTER - 05-03-2019 The only way to get the cmmg grendels to come in at ar15 weight standings is this. Replace all the internal parts that you can with either titanuim or aluminum parts. Remill the bcg to be really lowmass or have a custom shop build you a aluminum or titanium bcg in a lowmass configuation. Then take the lower and mill out the side plates of the mag area. Take the upper and have a custom shop mill in some slots along the length of the upper to drop weight their. Or have a custom shop mill you a lowmass style upper to replace the cmmg one with. Then loss the buffer and spring it comes with throw in the very best lowmass buffer and spring system made. Slap a adjustable gas block on the barrel after having the barrel re profiled down too .600 and the gas block area re profiled to .625 and then put on a titanuim adjustable gas block and a titanuim flash hider. Throw on the most stripped down basic stock they make and add a 10 round mag half loaded top it off with a red dot and bam a 7 pound cmmg grendel rifle. Are you could I don't know safe a bunch of money buy a chronagrah and work up sane loads and never break a bolt. I have a few irons on the fire right now but I'm gathering materials to do a bolt breakage test. Handloads will be set at 55k. And we going to see how many rounds it takes to break it. But then again it's not usable with the cmmg grendel bolt at ar15 mags. So it's useless in this discussion. Broken 6mmAR Bolt - LRRPF52 - 05-04-2019 A5BLASTER Wrote:The only way to get the cmmg grendels to come in at ar15 weight standings is this. If you're using a bolt with the mass of the LR-308 and CMMG Anvil bolt, you will depart from the 3:1 rule of carrier mass-to-bolt mass if you reduce the carrier weight. That can/will result in sluggish unlocking unless you gas it hard, and you still run into the issue of sluggish cyclic rate in the initial rearward inertia. This is one of the problems with the Remington Model 740 and 7400 semi-auto hunting rifles. The CMMG Anvil in Grendel also has a bit more mass than even a .308 bolt because of the reduced bolt face width for a narrower cartridge. Compound that with the fact that you have 10gr less of case capacity and lower working pressure than .308 Win., and you are really setting up for needing to make some gas system changes if you want to have a reliable action. I think for a 6mm AR, the CMMG Anvil makes a lot of sense where you aren't worried about bolt thrust, since the 6mm AR has more bolt thrust than 6.5 Grendel due to the bottle neck effect on back pressure. Broken 6mmAR Bolt - SHORT-N-SASSY - 05-04-2019 A worthwhile read: < http://www.ar15.com/forums/AR-15/ARCHIVED-THREAD-What-is-a-small-frame-308-/121-689061/?page=1 > Broken 6mmAR Bolt - A5BLASTER - 05-05-2019 LRRPF52 Wrote:If you're using a bolt with the mass of the LR-308 and CMMG Anvil bolt, you will depart from the 3:1 rule of carrier mass-to-bolt mass if reduce the carrier weight. Never knew they had a 3:1 bcg weight ratio to bolt. But how does that work because wouldn't a lowmass bcg in a ar15 be below the weight ratio as well. And suffer from the same gas issue you were speaking of. I may put that as a side project for later this summer. If I can't get my other projects sorted. I might buy a cmmg jerk the bolt and mill the bolt body down to fit a ar15 lowmass bcg I have laying around and then mess with getting the barrel to fit a ar15 upper, probably gave to mill the extention down a few thousands. I like too test stuff lol are break stuff lol maybe both lol. Broken 6mmAR Bolt - Kswhitetails - 05-08-2019 A5 - in the ar15, the overall variation and departure from the ideal of the ratio is much less pronounced than it would be for the Anvil. There's obviously a pretty wide envelope for the 15, considering all the variations that so many folks find relatively easy ways to make work, especially considering how many amateurs are out there putting together our Lego sets. 3.2-2.8:1 vs 6.5:1-ish etx... I'm no metallurgist. And I'm making a fool of myself asking; but why hasn't anyone made a super-steel bolt that would do what we're asking? Surely there's some kind of solution without re-inventing the entire wheel? Ti bolts with the proper heat treat, or Inconel blend? I'm sure it has something to do with the strength to flexibility ratio... I can tell you right now there is 2 grades of steel that could it it. But the finished bolt would be in the 200 dollar range. The problem isn't metal flex, it's the compression strength. Over repeated firings the steel molecules get so compressed and that's what causes the failure i.e. bolt lug breaking free. So it's not just the physical strength of the steal but the steals strength to resist compression and in doing so resist core and surface fractures that cause lug failures. Titanuim would work fine but the heat treat and any surface treatment has too be top shelf on the jiffy spot or it will shatter like glass. So that leaves us with 2 ways to accomplish what we want. Use steel or titanium that will jack the pricing of the bolt too be so high no-one will buy it. Or redesign the very bolt lug too extention ratio itself. Meaning leave the old lug pattern beihind and drop down too a 4 or 3 lug design, with beveled edges and a .125 boltface depth. Broken 6mmAR Bolt - LRRPF52 - 05-17-2019 Titanium for a bolt? Not gonna happen. That will break. AerMet with a new extension like the WOA arrangement would work if you want to chase pressure with the 6mm AR. Broken 6mmAR Bolt - DRandi - 07-04-2019 Super alloy bolts do exist and have for some time. Lewis Machine and Tool has been using Aermet 100 steel for a long time in their 7.62x39, 6.8, 5.56 bolts. Titanium is a big no go for bolt material. Shock fatigue of Ti-6Al-4V and ablation is the problem. It was the reason why titanium carriers were a rarity for a long time. It wasn't until cnc heat treating and DLC coating became more affordable to make it viable. The solution is actually quite simple and only take two parts, and has already been done. One is the Knights Armament SR-15 bolt. The better is AR15 Performance 800 series, (now discontinued) and 750XD series.
