Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Sticks - 10-18-2018

1 ,3 and 4 all look good. Almost kissing the lands on #1. Thank you for the detail. I will have to write that down in my book.

Damn nice shooting. I'd say load up 20 of the two that you like and shoot four, 5 round groups. See which ones runs best.

I plan on testing my 130s ELDs again this weekend. I have selected 3 charges (from a test a long while back) and loaded up 5 each. AA2520 and LeverRevoloution. Two stupid low SD charges (.2 fps on one) and a .6 moa group. COAL is 1.320 (sorry, not doing the conversion today). Mag length for my Howa. I can't remember the ogive measurement. Most of that test session was two holes overlapped and a stray - all 3 shot groups.

I also loaded up 10 rounds of 130 RDF and RL26 for (roo roo) Becky, my 6.5 PRC. Hope that she will like them, if not, then I have some expensive paperweights.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Second - 10-18-2018

I have now got result from 2 different bullets that a longer jump works good.
Its this 130gr ELD-M and the Scenar-L 136gr.

I have the lighter 108gr Scenar also under testing and as soon as I get time for the range, I have the exat same jump-test as for the 130gr ELDM-M. Will be interesting if I find the same result around 1,2-1,4mm jump for that bullet also.

Even if #1 looks good, it just feels better to have a little more room.

My first initial thought to proceed with this 130gr ELD-M was to explore a little more around the #4.
Perhaps test the following jumps:

1,1mm (0,0433")
1,2mm (0,0472")
1,3mm (0,0511")
1,4mm (0,0551")
1,5mm (0,0590")

Maybe an unnecessary test, but this can give a little confirmation on where I should settle.
It should be somewhere in the 1,3mm I think.

And thanks Sticks for the comment regarding shooting! Big Grin
I´m a bit of a newbie and still trying to find a good and solid shooting position with the KRG Bravo and the new trigger. But the more time I spend shooting, the better it feels.
Have also done some minor development on a homemade spigot mount for the bipods so it feel really stable now.
Looking forward to try this out to some distance soon!

You have got really low SD on that.
Is this two powders by any chance double-based? Have started to wounder if I might need to test another powder and see if the SD/ES will gett lower. Maybe not superimportant for me if the bullets shoots well, but it would give a little mor confident if I could get it lower.

Have read that the 130 RDF can be a challenge. And just because from what I´ve read will I stay away from that bullet at this point. (maybe) Rolleyes
Have found some nice prices on the Norma GT 130gr and this can be a possible bullet I will test in the future. Easy to find here in Sweden also.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Sticks - 10-18-2018

I look forward to your next round of testing.

I am pretty sure that the two powders I am running are double based. I am also running at a much higher velocity.

I was stunned when I saw that .2 SD. If it repeats, I'll be playing the seating depth game with you to see how well it tightens up.

We have one member here that had success with the RDF, and he already puts a lot of work into his brass prep. Not sure if that was the key, or he just has a barrel that likes them.

After my early promising results with the ELD, I will stick with it. This is strictly going to be food for the 4 Howa rifles in my clan (Girlfriend and her two daughters + me).

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Second - 10-18-2018

Ok.
I was a bit surprised on the SD figures I got. since I have used this powder for other bullets and got better results. Both the 140gr ELD-M and the Scenar-L 136gr had this powder.
One thought was to try double based powder and I will get a delivery any day now on VV N530. This powder is double based and will probably give more speed and less pressure. Or same speed and less pressure on less powder. Have been on the high end of the stick regarding pressure, compressed loads and full cases. Sometimes hard to even get the bullet seated enough.
So will do a separate test with that powder but I will continue on the thread with the same bullet.
Either way.
That will be an interesting powder. On the published powders for VV the N530 is used on ALL listed bullets, from 100gr up to 156gr. If this works, this can be the powder that will work for all bullets that I plan to use, and even more.
And for me this is a good thing since the N530 can be found in stores nerby.
We have a VERY small range of powders here in Sweden so if I find something that works OK I will probably stick with it.

Hope not that case prep is the "must do"-thing since this is probably something that I rush by...
I have some benchrest friends and they look at case prep and barrel cleaning a bit different than me. Wink

Nice to have a clan!
My wife have no idea what I do (thank god).
And the kids are to small for use of any rifle bigger than a air gun. But maybe later. And by that time I might be ready with all testing Rolleyes

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Sticks - 10-21-2018

I can't seem to get the SD and ES low, but the grouping is nice. It is about the level of my skillset.

I did have one set from my 6.5 PRC loads that was a spooky SD of .5 and ES of 1.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Second - 11-05-2018

Finally had the time to perform the second test with the jump on this bullet and load.

Did however a really big mind**** when loading this and therefore there are 7 different jumps tested...
Find out the obvious that if the ogive measure is shorter, the jump is bigger. Lesson learned.

Shooting was performed prone at 100meters, bipods and small bag under buttstock. Bullets firing in a "Round Robin"-style. Beginning form smallest jump going up to highest jump, back from highest jump down to smallest and back-and-forth until all bullets were shot. So each group/jump is not shot complete and then the next one.
About +2 deg. celcius and almost no wind.

4.

7.

Another lesson learned is that I need to take more breaks during shooting. The concentration shifted alot and the shooting was not good in the end.
But the result is what it is.
Was a bit surprised on the #1. An this because the #2 was not good at all. The #4 was also good and this jump was the better one from the first test also. The #3 was good until the last shot that went low right and the same with the #5, last shot low right. So maybe the #4 with the 1,4mm jump is the keeper.
Initial thought is to load up some rounds from the #1 and #4 and shoot them and see if they still performs.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Sticks - 11-05-2018

I kind of had the same issue yesterday my own self. Previous test gave me a nice group with AA2520. So I loaded up 40 and shot a bunch of 5 round groups. All but 2 sucked and the 2 that didn't weren't up to my standards. Back to the board again.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Second - 11-12-2018

On the range yesterday morning.
Test with the 130gr ELD-M and VV N140 and two different jump.
the #1 and #4 from previous test. Loaded up 10 rounds of each jump and shot them in 5 shot groups.
Prone at 100m.

Here are the result on paper:

1.
#1 with 1,1mm jump (0,0433")

2.
#4 with 1,4mm jump (0,0551")

Not that super excited with any of the results.
It felt good on the range, but not that good on the target.
The #1 went a lot better last time. Maybe just luck that time. The #4 preformed better last time, but better than the #1 this time.
Not sure how to proceed from this. Maybe just stick with the #4.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Sticks - 11-12-2018

I'd stick with #4 on this one.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Second - 11-12-2018

You are probably right Sticks.
I have a few bullets left until I´m complete out of 130gr ELD-M.

I will load up all of them like #4 and do one last test on target. Just to confirm.

If I get a good result from that, I will buy more bullets and continue out to longer distances. If the result don´t get better. I probably will put this bullet to rest for now and focus on other bullets and start shooting instead of testing during the winter that is approaching here in the northern of Sweden.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Sticks - 11-13-2018

THe ELDs are looking like they are wanting a long jump.

In my 6.5 PRC, the 147 ELD are .08 (2,032mm) to the lands at mag length and are cloverleaf groups. Might be worth trying a 3 round session going deeper. I'll have to try coming off mag length in my Howa and see what happens. I really need to get my SD/ES consistently low first though.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Second - 11-13-2018

Will see how I proceed on from this.
Have a total of 12 bullets left. And as for now, I will do one more test as the last time. If it don´t looks to work, I will go on with other bullets. (Probably the lighter 108gr Scenar)
Will maybe continue this bullet testing next spring if I feel for it.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Second - 11-21-2018

Tested the last of the 130gr ELD-M this Saturday.

I loaded up 2 runds for sighter/CBS and then 5 rounds of each jump.

Result:
#1 with 1,1mm jump (0,0433")

2.
#4 with 1,4mm jump (0,0551")

With this result, maybe the 1,1mm jump is the keeper.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Sticks - 11-21-2018

Well, I go out today. Looks to be the last decent day for a while.

Revisiting my load workup in .2gr increments. Going to find that sweet spot I hope. Also running some CFE (3 rounds each charge weight) looking for a node. Unlikely that I will have 3 that will give a low ES/SD when #s 4 and 5 would have skewed it...but possible.

This method worked well for me with (roo roo) Becky [6.5 PRC] loading 147 ELD and RL26. 55 total fired rounds (wasted 24 on the low end, too slow) to nail the sweet spot, no messing with jump either. 4.6 sd and 10.2 es. Keeps a .5 MOA at 750y. Really darn good for me.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Second - 03-19-2019

Have started to itch in the head and the interest have now got to the point that I need to try this bullet again :o
A box if 100pcs is on it´s way home and now the planning is to pick up where I left of.

But where was that...

The test with the longer jump ended up with a bit of inconsistency between 1,4mm and 1,1mm jump for this bullet.
But it feels as if I might been too fast to put the short jump away.
Maybe return to the short jump and explore the higher node. Or continue where I left off and use the load of 28,4gr VV N140 and test the 1,4mm jump again.

Anyone tried more with this bullet and different jump in a bolt gun?

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Second - 02-12-2020

Have done some work on my Rem 700 Grendel so I can't really pick up where I left of.
Will do some new test with this bullet and another powder, Vihtavouri N540.

I've also started another thread with another 130gr bullet. The Norma Golden Target 130gr.
I've loaded up exactly the same charges for both bullets and will shoot them beside each other and see what the difference will be.

So for this 130gr ELD-M I will be starting at 29,0gr and with 0,2gr increments up to 31,0gr.
The COAL is 63,47mm (~2.498") with 0,33mm jump to the lands.
Primer is CCI450 and Lapua brass.

Longer jump looked last time to be good for this bullet so since I've loaded close to the lands now, it might be the same result this time.
Only time will tell.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Second - 02-15-2020

A trip to the range to do the first test with the 130gr ELD-M and the N540 powder.
Also with the "new" Krieger barrel.

Shot over the Magnetospeed Sporter.

About -3 Celcius.
Alt: 300 meters over sea level.
Baro: 965 hPa
Humidity: 92%

No clear pressure signs on the brass or primer.
The load 30,2gr looks like a good speed node.

The load 30,7gr also looks like a node, but maybe a spike just before and after.

Have also done the exakt same laddertest with the 130gr Norma GT.
Result for that bullet in another thread if someone is interested with the comparison.

Hornady 130gr ELD-Match - Sticks - 02-16-2020

Second, I for one really appreciate that you post your testing and all your results.

2600 fps for a 130 out of a Grendel is phenomenal. I really want to get my shout out PRC barrel cut and chambered for a long Grendel round. 19# MPA rifle shooting that round ought to be like a BB gun.
The one match that I shoot, the farthest target at 885y would give me 8.16mil elevation, and 1.9mil windage in a 90* 10mph wind.

I'm with second. A 129 grain bullet doing just over 2600 from the grendel case sure is nice. More so when it hits the steel at 600 yards lol.

I'm happy to share my results!
Even if my rifle is not really according to standard with the longer throat. But it gives at least some info what it can do. Big Grin

The speed with this 130gr ELD-M is very interesting, for sure!
But I need to get it faster if it going to beat the 140gr ELD-M that I currently shoot at 2480 fps. This is just theoretical ballistic figures, but this 130gr ELD-M needs to go about 2825 fps when it comes to windage, but that is out to 1200 meters. But out to 600 meter the speed needs to be 2770 fps (If my numbers are correct). The speed of 2770 fps is probably not something that I will reach and at the same time be in the safezone regarding pressure...
Now, the 140gr ELD-M is a heavy bullet and maybe not the normal Grendel weight of bullet. But it looks promising for longer ranges, even if I have a feeling that I are pushing that bullet a bit too fast since I got pressure signs.

But I will do some more loads with this 130gr ELD-M and see where I end up.
The load 30,2gr looks from the first test and in the graph very stable. Will continue with that for the next test.
The other 130gr bullet that I tested, the Norma GT also looks interesting, and also goes a bit faster than the 130gr ELD-M with the same load. More tests on that bullet also. (Info on that bullet in a separate thread)
