6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - lazyengineer - 03-08-2022 myrifle Wrote:To the best of my knowledge I am the only bolt grendel owner to ever safely get over the 3000fps mark, actually hitting 3300fps with a 85 grain maker trex from my cz 527 varmint grendel. My opinion as well. Don't try to turn a .223 into a .22-250. Recognize the Grendel for what it is: a hard hitting general purpose round with both range AND impact performance that fits into an AR15 platform. If you want to send a 6.5 mm bullet over 1000 yards at the 3000 fps class velocity, then 6.5 CM is ready when you are. Is my advice. And FWIW, is actually cheaper to feed then Grendel. If willing to run a bolt action. The entire point: of an AR15 frame size platform isn't being utilized anyway. So, again 6.5 CM is ready when you are. Just my highly opinionated non-humble opinion - it's OK to have fun liking stuff I don't like That said, chasing this is going to be a frustrating experience and taking things way beyond their design rating, for what again? Rarely does one need the nimble aspect of what Grendel offers when trying to shoot 1000 yards.
6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - LRRPF52 - 03-08-2022 Even shooting the 95gr V-MAX at 3000fps, its still not a 1000yd bullet. G7 BC on it is roughly .187, which is sad and pathetic for long range, but great for within 400yds on coyotes. 1 mil of wind drift at 400yds at 10mph full value wind. Sierra has published data for 85gr Varminter doing 3050fps from a 24 Grendel using 3 different powders, so 3000fps is perfectly within reach of a 24 Grendel with 85gr for a nice varminting load that doesnt suck up a lot of powder per case. 6.5CM is a lot more expensive to feed than Grendel both at the bench and at the store. Brass doesnt last anywhere near as long, needs to be trimmed regularly, eats more powder per firing. Same with .260 Rem. Boxed ammo prices for 6.5CM are out of control right now. Back to the threads focus of 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparisons, you see that depending on the barrel length, you can achieve a wide range of velocities like most other centerfire bottlenecked rifle cartridges. You can look through all of the published data to get an idea of where you will be at with each powder, bullet, and barrel length combination. There is quite a bit of overlap, depending on powder and rifling profile being used. 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - jackRyan - 03-11-2022 myrifle Wrote:To the best of my knowledge I am the only bolt grendel owner to ever safely get over the 3000fps mark, actually hitting 3300fps with a 85 grain maker trex from my cz 527 varmint grendel.Great advice. i own a true speed deamon. A Teka 204 Ruger. Nothing else comes close but maybe a 22-250 I had years ago. Over 4000 FPS pushing a 32 gr boolit. It actually creates a vapor trail on some days. I hit a Pennsylvania coyote that was a legend. Big dark brown coyote. My bro-in-law said thats Big Brown. He was about 250 yards away. I hit him just behind the shoulder. He fell like now and hard. Didnt take a step. We were both amazed. Took it to give to a taxidermist my bro-in-law knew. He called him and asked What the he!l did you shoot him with? Evidently his internals were like mush 3 inches on each side of the wound channel. The 204 boolit was never found. Not even a piece of the jacket. After shooting that rifle, everything else seems slow. I would like to try a bolt @3000 fps. Take care 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - Big_John - 03-11-2022 Looks like 20" or 22" is the sweet spot..... Just like 20" is the sweet spot for .308 Win I have a 22" ............ 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - FLshooter - 03-11-2022 Depends on what you want to do.I purchased my Grendels for long distance shooting .Unfortunately 600 yards is all thats avail to me now.Shortest Grendel barrel I own is 22 inch. Ive been able to hit well out 850 yards with 22. But,my 24 Bartlien does it better! 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - LRRPF52 - 03-11-2022

Advice taken. The 6.5 grendel is truly amazing, but the quest for it to be a consistant accurate round at 3k is for gray beards. Best to move up to a 6.5 creedmoor instead. i have never ever had a max load be the best match load. it seems always to be just a few grains behind to find that tight MOA sweet spot. Thanks for the input. 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - Zeneffect - 04-12-2022 I would think using a bolt to hit 3k would be easier than a semi-auto. Pretty sure 3k is doable with sierra 85gr and some norma 202. Interesting combination, especially in a bolt gun. ![]() 22" barrel ar15, and still way light charge. 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - jackRyan - 08-10-2023 Zeneffect Wrote:I would think using a bolt to hit 3k would be easier than a semi-auto. Interesting combination, especially in a bolt gun. i am always trying to get a little more juice out of my AR-15 using the amazing 6.5 Grendel. After years of testing and trying, my conclusion is that because of the bolt face and the chamber on some 6.5 grendel barrels, it is way easier to just buy a bolt in a 6.5 Creedmoor. The grendel, as much as I love it, has its limits, even with a 24 inch barrel and maxed out loads in a bolt rifle. Better off goung with a 6.5 Creedmoor. instant large gain of energy, power, range, longer more aero boolits, and you can easily do 140 grain boolits at over 3100 feet per second stretching your range out to super sonic 1250 yard range and with a sleek, slipery140 grain boolit. Now you can comfortably shoot an Elk nor Mullie if you want. I have seen a guy get a moose just inside 100 yards with the Creedmoor. Two shots right behind the front sholder, 7 inches apart. You can download ammo to very low recoil at 140 gr at 2800fps, or use 123 gr grendel boolits. You are also not giving up any inherant accuracy with the creedmoor. 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - LRRPF52 - 08-10-2023 jackRyan Wrote:i am always trying to get a little more juice out of my AR-15 using the amazing 6.5 Grendel. So I have owned and loaded for all of them, multiple 6.5 Grendels, .260 Remingtons, and 6.5 Creedmoor. .260 Rem has more powder capacity and even with 26 barrels is not pushing a 140gr to anywhere near 3100fps. 24 .260 Rem does 2680-2840fps with a 140gr from a bolt gun. Youre talking about 260-320fps faster than any published, pressure-tested loads with that 3100fps number. Not even the 6.5 PRC will do 3100fps with a 24 barrel unless you push over max, and 6.5 PRC is a short magnum with far more case capacity than any of the 6.5-08 class of cartridges. 6.5 Creedmoor has less case capacity than .260 Rem, will push a 140gr to 2750fps from a bolt gun. Im not sure where you saw that you can push 6.5CM w/140gr to 3100fps, or download it to 2800fps, because those are way fast for that cartridge. Neither .260 Rem nor 6.5CM will fit inside the AR-15, and the sight picture disturbance is much closer to a .308 Win than a lot of people are willing to admit, which means you often need someone to spot for you when youre shooting distance or game. You can mitigate the sight picture disturbance if you shoot 107gr-123gr, and 130gr isnt too bad either with a heavier rifle fired from bipod-supported/rear bag, but they arent like shooting a 6.5 Grendel. I like them all, but if youre stepping up to a bolt gun, I would strongly consider 6.5 PRC over the 6.5CM. The performance is awesome with the PRC, laser-flat, a lot less drift, and with a properly-built rifle, you can really tame the muzzle climb far better than I imagined. 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - Jake TN - 08-11-2023 LRRPF52, at what distance are you still get reliable expansion with the 12.5 inch with the SSTs? I know my new 12.5 upper likes the SST. Had horrible results with the 95 gr TREX on the first test loads. 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - LRRPF52 - 08-11-2023 Jake TN Wrote:LRRPF52, at what distance are you still get reliable expansion with the 12.5 inch with the SSTs? I know my new 12.5 upper likes the SST. Had horrible results with the 95 gr TREX on the first test loads. For the altitudes where I encounter mule deer, assuming 2350fps mv from my 12 with 123gr SST, my program says 400yds 1817fps, using the Litz G1 BC of .462 for the 123gr SST, not the Hornady BC of .510 G1. If I was at sea level, it would be 325yds. Most guides will stalk their clients into within 300yds, even if they are shooting magnums, because most hunters have no training or experience in compensating for trajectory or wind. If I was hunting mulies, I think I would load up the 129gr ABLR and get some good downrange impact data with it for a while. BC is really high with it, and expansion goes down to 1300fps, since its a bonded bullet with plenty of tail mass to deliver deep penetration. I dont think the outcome would be much different using 123gr SST or ELD-M though. ELD-M expands more rapidly, which would be ideal for the 12. 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - lazyengineer - 08-11-2023 LRRPF52 Wrote: This is a great graphic, and really points out the remarkable aspect of the 6.5 Grendel in shorter length BBL's. In my own usage and assessments, I run 6.5 Grendel in AR15's. And with that, 20" is about as long as typical. And when looking at the velocity loss from a 20" down to a 14.5" BBL, it's remarkably less than you might think. Dropping only about 100 FPS. Which no doubt is why 12.5" is so popular, because that's probably right about where the inflection point is, where further cuts start getting expensive. And with that, Grendel impact energy out of a 14.5 (or 12") is remarkably good out to very practical distances. It's one of the cooler aspects of this round. From a logic standpoint, this makes more sense the more I learn. The best way I can figure it: after about 3" of travel, most of the powder is burned, and only a little more additional gas is generated. That peak pressure and volume in the casing and little bit of barrel, is basically the "bottle" of high pressure gas that's pushing the bullet the rest of the way down the barrel. with just a little extra gas generation from additional burn. In 6.5 Creedmoor, it's a big reservoir bottle, so can keep pushing down a longer barrel. In 6.5 Grendel, it's a shorter little casing, and so a smaller little bottle. Meaning additional barrel length doesn't buy you as much, as there's less gas in a bottle to keep pushing it. In the most extreme case, I recently discovered, of .22LR, where the gas bottle is a straight walled little .22 Casing of quite small volume, additional barrel buys you very little. I recently SBR'd an 18" .22LR BBL down to just 13", with ZERO velocity loss with 40 gr bullets (within stnd dev.), due to this. Anyway maybe everyone else recognizes that, but to me, it helps explain while shortening the barrel in a 6.5 Grendel isn't all that expensive; compared to .223, which is higher pressure and has a large bottle volume ratio compared to the bullet and barrel diameter. Grendel is a very cool little round. 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - biodsl - 08-11-2023 lazyengineer Wrote:I recently SBR'd an 18" .22LR BBL down to just 13", with ZERO velocity loss with 40 gr bullets (within stnd dev.), due to this. Slight change of subjects, but I've notice as well. Unless you need a longer barrel for iron sight radius, there's nothing to be gained going over 16" in a .22LR. 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - LRRPF52 - 08-12-2023 lazyengineer Wrote:This is a great graphic, and really points out the remarkable aspect of the 6.5 Grendel in shorter length BBL's. From shooter perspective, I just dont notice much difference between 12, 16, and 18 Grendels. I can show you the minutiae with a ballistics program of how they differ, but when Im in the scope, I break the shot and watch the round go-in just the same. That little 12 cranks the Federal 120gr SMK OTM load out at 2400fps, so there really isnt much difference between that and the 18 with the same load doing 2500fps. I can have suppressed and about the same ballistics for less overall length, in a compact little blaster that doubles as a great HD and hunting system, while still staying very lightweight and maneuverable. I cant spot my own hits with a 6.5 Creedmoor or .260 Rem as easily because the sight picture comes off-target pretty noticeably, unless I use an offensive muzzle brake. There are a lot of penalties I have to pay stepping up to the 6.5-08 class of cartridges, especially in a gas gun. For bolt guns, if someone is going that route, the 6.5 PRC out-classes the .260 Rem and 6.5CM substantially. 143gr going 2950fps from a 22 barrel is no joke. The short, fat powder columns with a balanced overbore ratio are really efficient at generating velocity, and I cant think of any that really do what 6.5 Grendel does, especially with its 50,000psi chamber pressure. 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - Jake TN - 08-13-2023 LRRPF52 Wrote:For the altitudes where I encounter mule deer, assuming 2350fps mv from my 12 with 123gr SST, my program says 400yds 1817fps, using the Litz G1 BC of .462 for the 123gr SST, not the Hornady BC of .510 G1. On my last elk trip, I had several shot opportunities on mulies, who must know the season schedule by heart, because they couldnt have cared less about our presence. The elk on the other hand were hyper-aware that they were being hunted, and did an outstanding job of staying as far away from hunters as possible. For Southeast US deer, you can pretty much pick any bullet you like in 6.5 Grendel, including the 90gr TNT, 95gr V-MAX, and 100gr NBT, maybe even just light-load them for no recoil but enough to run the action to bolt lock, and youll be fine. 6.5 Grendel Barrel Length Comparison - FBOldCrow - 08-27-2023 We should all have a nice selection like LRRPF52's to choose from. I'd be at the range more if I did! Sweet spread sir! Thanks to you all for the information as well. I guess I'll bump out to a 20" on the 6mm ARC build when funded. |
