I won't comment on my feelings towards binary triggers.
But maybe one of the ways to diffuse with your buddy is that he broke one of the major basic tenants of firearm safety: "ALWAYS point the muzzle in a safe direction." Without seeing the range, I won't comment on whether the berm or the ground in front of it is a safe direction.

The way I see this is one of our guys telling us about an incident he had with someone involving a safety issue. Keep it focused on the subject, please.

And that is exactly why we as gun owners are in the predicament that we are in......
Childish immature and often vulgar attitudes grown from individuals that cannot resolve the situation any differently.

Maybe OP's description is a little misleading. Only way for us to really know is to visit the range in question. How about it, OP?
I guess I didn't mention that the house is an underground bunker looking place and the only thing visible is the top of the carport. It is also 700 feet higher than the 7' berm. there is a field 150 yards wide behind the berm that gently slopes upward to being 30' higher than the top of the berm. Then as the hill rises there is another 200 yards of thick timber. My neighbor shoots on this range regularly and will be out there Sunday for the yearly egg shoot. I don't think you could actually hit his house but if you tried you could hit the carport roof. On the other side of the hill there are several houses and big fields that if you mortared some rounds up there with handgun rounds you could hit something maybe. If Wes had his weapon pointed at the berm while he played with his safety there would have been no issue. I have seen AD's happen inside police stations and gun ranges many times. I have seen AD's that were caused by airheads that were checking to see if the safety was on by pulling the trigger. Probably the most common AD is caused by jacking a round out of a semi auto, then removing the magazine and pulling the trigger. Beyond this I am now completely against binary triggers, prefer three shot burst triggers if I have to have the capability. Which I don't.

Exactly, can't believe he didn't point the darned thing at the 7' tall by 12 food wide berm while he tested to see if he could put the safety on with the trigger pulled back???????? WTH!

Just be thankful it was a 9mm. I shoot pistol to my 330 yard steel elk. Shooting 380 and 9mm, I'm having to hold over to my half mile tree line, top of trees just to lob it out that far. I'm in a fortunate situation where there isn't a house inline with my property for over 3 miles.

Folks, perhaps the government is doing what they do because we don't do enough to police our own ranks. Political correctness wins because of peer pressure. We should be using the same mechanics to clean up our own ranks. Whether there is some merit to bump-stocks and binary triggers ( to any one except ammo manufacturers ) can be debated until the end of time. And the only ultimate loosers will be us legitimate gun owners. The OP was correct in re-aligning his buddy. We all need to do more of that. How many of us / y'all have proposed an Eddie Eagle class at a local school or encouraged a kid to join the skeet thing at their school. These kinds of activities get kids started off correctly ( with re-enforced training ) and makes a convert for life. AND GENERATES A LOT OF POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE.

And Just_John, agreed. We should remember that the first rule of ownership and use of any firearm is "You are responsible for anything that takes place after you pull the trigger."

Not sure what the max ord is, on a .50 at 1800 yards, but it was either a really thin forest, a really short forest, or murphy was in play.
Regardless, we will never be able to keep the stupid from making headlines. The smart ones already police their own.
My last outing at a "public" open shooting area ended with the group of people across the road from me having not one, but TWO NDs in 5 minutes by the same person. Group of 4, nobody got hurt but enough for me to cut my day short and leave before #3 occurred in my direction. Especially since the "Head of the clan" was getting louder and angrier since he was unable to hit what he was aiming at, and everyone else was.

These types of idiots never shoot near me again.
Around my friends, everyone clears every gun as it's handed over. Yes, you handed me an "unloaded" gun and yes I will inspect it again, and then the next guy does the same. We also require all guns put down on table to be left open and pointed downrange. Well a new friend of a friend actually gets offended that I cleared his "unloaded" gun. Tells me that's disrespectful that I don't trust him just 'cause he's new. Nope, we do that with every gun. Then keeps putting loaded, chambered guns on the table willy-nilly. Gets upset when called out on it. "But it's on safe!"
He won't be invited back.
Oh yeah, he put 20 rounds through my .50 almost rapid fire without any thought to the high cost of it.
