Finally got a barrel/bolt coming from the Liberty group buy. I ordered all the parts for the build last week and everything came in Sat & Mon. That Diamondhead VRS-T handguard is nice in the hand. The only thing left to order is some ammo, mags, and thread protector for the barrel.

Checking the site multiple times per day, hoping that XcountryRider will have an update and that the barrels have shipped. But I know it's a while off yet.

This is my first AR build, and I've been wanting a Grendel since the old site was up. Is it always this hard waiting for your first build to happen?

I guess I'll be reading old threads and watching video's on assembling the upper and stock sections. The lower has been assembled for years.

Sorry to say but I'm not involved with it, XcountryRider is heading off the Liberty Buy. Not sure of the status.

They are great barrels though and I'm pushing 1" groups with mine at 200 yards. So they call that 1/2" moa. Well a flyer on the first round but then got them in there.

My SST's are way more accurate too, by a long shot. I thought it was me and today I broke out some SST's for sighting in what I'll use on my hunt, and man what a difference. Much tighter groups. ... first group of 4 then 5 are A-max and then 3 SST's, all at 200 yards.

Tomorrow more testing with only SST's. If it proves what I think, then A-max will sit.

Do you have AR15 armorer tools, like an armorer's wrench, clamshell jaws for the upper receiver, and a punch set? Bench with a vice? Jaw inserts for the vice to protect metal parts from damage?

It's also helpful to have a bench block for doing your gas block installation, mainly the gas tube roll pin.

Remember to isolate the barrel when dong muzzle device installation or removal, don't hold the upper when doing muzzle device work.

Sorry about that, I corrected the post. Those are some great groups on the SST's. The little bit I've read about them in the reloading and hunting threads, I think the SST's are better for hunting. Haven't found any in stock though for reloading or already loaded ammo. Also thinking about the 107gr solid copper bullets. I've got some 120gr Nosler Ballistic tips that I loaded for my 6.5X55, but looking for something better. Got a link to your Liberty barrel build? Just wondering what it is, and what parts you used???

Bought an armorer's wrench when I bought the lower years ago. Also have a 4" bench vise and a set of rubber and UHMW jaw protectors. Got a set of punchs, but really liked the ones that I think you posted with the springs IIRC. Also bought one of the HF work benches years ago to mount my reloading presses on. It has a carpenters vice (all wooden jaws) mounted on one end if needed. I guess I'll do a search for a bench block, if I have too I can always mill one from a piece of UHMW or hardwood.

Thanks for the tip on isolating the barrel when adding the muzzle device or thread protector. Not sure which way I'll go yet. I've read several post reminding folks to measure the exit holes on their muzzle devices. Talk about messing up somebody's day.

Thanks, that looks like the ones that someone had posted picture of in their thread. Now I've got a link to the mfg. I would have never guessed 3500# of force being generated though. Could have used those for driving pins when we used to do repair work on 65 yard dragline buckets and chains instead of those 16-20# sledge hammers.

If you have the means to mill your own tools, then I recommend using the UHMW so that it is profiled to your particular gas block, as the Brownell's orange one is horrible for the task. I modified mine to be able to better fit a standard FSB, as well as circular low-profile gas blocks.

With the low profile gas blocks, you have a cylinder with another spine for the gas tube extending from it, which makes it difficult to secure on a bench block, as well as within an insulated vice.

I also taper my roll pin heads to assist with getting them started in the holes, and the gas tube roll pin is one of the most difficult to get started.

You will also want to radius the face of your ejector with any 6mm PPC-based case in the AR15.

thanks for the pics and link. If I were going to be building AR's regularly I would buy tools. However, this may be my one and only, unless I decide to do a 6X45. I think I'll fire up the mill and make a block. May also fire up the lathe and make a roll pin holder out of some W-1.

What is the purpose of rounding the edges on the ejector pin? Is that one of the things that dings up the brass, that I've read about? I know the other was to put velcro on the brass deflector.

With the wider PPC-based cases, and the angle that the case head is at when it hands-off from the feed lips, the edge of the case can get hung-up on a flat-headed ejector. The Hornady brass has a nice chamfer to it that feeds best, but the other cases are a little more prone to getting stuck on the side of the ejector. By radiusing it, you solve that potential problem.

The larger set with the rubberized jaws are excellent for installing roll pins. The jaws remain in parallel with each other so the pin stays vertical. These are crazy fast and easy to use.

By the way Tedward, where do you shoot? I'm on the other side of the river, but I will be relocating near Fredericksburg or Alexandria as soon as my house sells.

I can't recommend the vice grip method, since you're looking at galling steel on steel with the lugs, so I use the Brownell's tool. It makes ejector removal and installation painless:
