Which rail for 6.5G - 45r - 11-24-2013
Thinking about getting a Troy alpha Vtac.They look light and strong.
Will they work with mega billet Upper receivers.
Have a Samson on 3gun model and like it but want to try something different in FDE that uses stock barrel nut.
Any other rails out there that would work well with a 18 inch barrel and billet upper.

I want to be able to reach out farther with more down range energy and less wind deflection than 556 or 300BLK.
Weight is not a big concern as I have a LW 300BLK for close range needs.
It will have a 4x16 FFP scope since the 65G works well at long range with high BC bullets.
I intend to use it mainly for hunting and accurate long range target shooting.

The reason I asked is because I have really gotten into carbon fiber handguards lately. I have a rifle-length version with a quality attachment system for a standard barrel nut that is literally 5.3 oz. With the barrel nut, it is 6.6 oz.
If you will be carrying the 18" for stalking & hunting, sling attachment would be a significant factor for me. I like the Apex Gator Guard, AA's G10 carbon fiber handguards, and this Carbon Fiber unit I have. One of our forum members makes carbon fiber HG's as well.

I have a Fortis Rev 12" on my 5.56 that used the stock barrel nut. Love it. On my 6.5 I'll just be shooting it from the bench or prone so it is just getting an aluminum free-float tube. I had a DPMS I was going to use but found a vented one I like better. Both are really light. Here's the DPMS.

I am going with something like a Troy alpha/vtac, Samson, MI SS G2, or Diamondhead. Haven't figured it out 100% though, but i like the look of the monolithic upper rail and no need for the other 3 rails (ie extra weight). I don't care for the plain tubes, but thats just my preference.

i have the 13.5" Diamonhead VRS-T and like it alot. It's not the lightest, but it fits mt hand very well and if I ever decide to be tacticool, I can add rails.

i run the pri carbon tubes on all my current uppers you can fet the target version without rails for 180

That is light.
The lightest metal rail I've seen is the new MI keymod rail at 8.5 ounces with their barrel nut.
Might get a carbon fiber rail with sling attachment stud.

Haven't tried a carbon fiber rail yet.
I might get one.My lightweight profile 16 inch 300BLK makes my 18 inch standard profile 3gun rifle seem heavy even though it's fluted.
The lightest and thinnest metal rail I've read about so far is the new Midwest keymod rail at 8.5 oz with their barrel nut.
The new SLR keymod rail looks good but heavier.

What type of barrel nut does it have? Does the gas tube have to pass through it?

I just completed a build and used a Seekins MCSR V2. I needed a larger inside dia. To cover the gas block on a .936 barrel. But it's the nicest HG I've owned. Pretty light for the size and solid. And the fact that it can only line up seamlessly with the top rail and cannot rotate is a huge plus. Price is very low for the quality.
