Got her put together.... - Outsider - 06-26-2012

Well after all this wait time, I ended up cancelling my AA order last week and ordering an overwatch upper from midway USA…24” barrel…
My first thoughts…Its heavy…real heavy…near 11 or 12 pounds…but when you throw it up it is easy to hold due to the long barrel, it balances very well.* My 30mm tube Leupold Mark 4 with the one piece Larue Tactical One piece mount does not help the weight issue…But its rock solid and that’s what I want.* I like the fit and finish…the take down pins cannot be pushed out by hand, you have to have a plastic object to force them out (which I am very happy about), and the fit with my RRA lower is a spot on match .* My RRA 2 stage trigger is going to be replaced in the coming years…its fine for now but I will be replacing it.* My stock needs an upgrade also, will more than likely go with the Magpul that has those little cheek pieces that stick out to the sides.* I am going to put this round through my own tests over the next few months and I will only use this rifle this deer season…I plan on taking 3-5 whitetails with it this fall I hope to shoot a few varmints with it as well.* I am going to use the 123 A-Max which I have 100 of (well 95 now since I shot 5 of them) I would say that I will more than likely use a 120 Gr. Ballistic tip from nosler as my do everything round…I am not a hand loader, so I am going to have to turn into one…am currently in training (my friend with 30 years of experience is teaching me the ins and outs).** If it turns out that I like the performance and the round, I will maybe order a 22” stainless pipe with flutes and a compensator…Oh yeah, I was surprised that the rifle actually kicks some…more than a 22-250…not nearly as much as magnum calibers, but its noticeable on paper.* Overall I am pleased with the rifle…it’s on the heavy side, but I will take heavy and accurate over lightweight and marginal accuracy.* Here are the photos…

Screw me? LOL yeah, i have been looking at them, i was hoping to get one of the surefire muzzle brakes, but the odd thread size seems to be giving me fits finding one to fit it....Any suggestions?

And did i mention how much scrubbing and how many patches it takes to get that barrel clean!!! I hope all this fuss over breaking in the barrel is worth it...i am at 5 shots and 5 complete scrubdowns...and about half of a trash bag full of patches....

Yep, before...during..and after...I use hoppes bench solivent...I believe it to be right up there with the best out there...I just wanted to be sure that i was getting all the gunk out...The bolt was really greased up, i took a good bit of scrubbing to get all that crap off of there...

Why? Shoot it, shoot it, shoot it. Clean the powder residue, and shoot it some more!

A total waste of time to do that cleaning regimen thing. Not ONE person can prove it does anything but wear the barrel out from the cleaning rod rubbing in the wrong places. Lots of people who I respect and who shoot on the National and International scene are convinced the whole cleaning thing is simply a ploy by the barrel makers to make you wear out the barrel faster!

Not needed, not necessary. Clean it from the factory to make sure there is no machining or assembly gunk left, then shoot it, shoot it, shoot it!

"It is the consensus of the High Power National Match competitors that barrel break in is a bunch of huey invented by the barrel makers to allow them to blame bad performing barrels on the shooter not following their documented break in process. This is from shooters who routinely burn up a barrel every year, and do it year after year. I've personally gone through three barrels now on my personal competition rifle. The first one I followed the normal drawn out process of shooting one shot and cleaning shooting five shots and cleaning and so on. On my last two I just shot them to get a good zero, perhaps 20 shots and cleaned and then cleaned after every match or practice session there after, normally 88 shots with 40 of them fired rapid fire. I can tell no difference in accuracy or ease of cleaning. All three of these barrels shot .5 MOA from day one through their life of 3,000-5,000 rounds.

How do you really feel about it?

I realize there is a small group of people out there who enjoy the ritual of cleaning.....But the vast majority of shooters like to shoot, yet we get bamboozled into thinking that we aren't doing something right if we shoot our guns.

I went 700+ rounds once between sticking cleaning rods down my Grendel throat, and I regularly go 500 rounds. I don't do anything until the accuracy starts to drop off, and thats usually around 500 rounds.

Shoot more, clean less!

LRRPF52 told me at Boomershoot that he's done enough cleaning for a lifetime, and he only cleans if absolutely necessary. I think along the same lines now, and I'm a guy who washes my hands about 150 times a day. (I'm in Medicine and see patients all day long!)

I used to clean everything after every range trip....no more!

My only issue is that every time you shoot its like welding small amounts of copper to the inside of your barrel. Now I will lightly clean after inspecting a brand new fresh from the store barrel to ensure that there are no burrs or other small particles in there.

I used to clean after every outing, I have since stopped that to some extend. I dont scrub the inside of my barrel because that wire brush can do damage. I run it thru there twice then use the cloth and then a very light amount of oil. Now this may be right or wrong but when I look down my barrels with a light they look clean and that makes me feel good about it.

Same here. I might push a patch through the bore but that's about it until a copper scrub is needed.

I don't necessarily disagree with you on the copper issue, I'm just not sure its a problem. Copper and bronze make great bearing surfaces. Bronze last longer because its harder, but billions of bronze bushings have been made. I really am starting to believe that copper in the barrel is not a bad thing. It took about 10-20 shots for my 7mm WSM to settle down after a complete barrel cleaning with the whole copper out idea. That leads me to believe that the copper in there was a good thing. I shot it about 3-400 times between copper cleanings, and it stayed accurate until it had something like 1500+ rounds down the tube, which is more than I was told to expect. Now I clean it with some type of carbon remover, and move on. I have a brand new barrel on the WSM, so I'll see how that idea works pretty soon! No copper cleaning and we'll see.

With the appropriate respect to bwaites and others, my own experience differs.. But then it could be I just got very lucky on the one barrel on which I performed the very methodical barrel brake in.. It is a sub 1/2" shooter..

flk k

I personally like the pri brakes. they are called quiet brakes, but they are a muzzle brake, so... It really just boils down to personal preference, but the lightest brake you can get that does the job is what I would shoot for. Templar builds some nice brakes as well.

The only reason that I stated copper welding as a bad thing is because of the lands and groves. Over time this can and will present a problem. Now I have heard of a process that can take care of that. IIRC it has to do with a certain type of powder that has small amounts of glass in it. I thought it took a min of 20 or so shots to fully coat your barrel though I can not be completely certain. I can ask my co worker who knows just what it is and get back to everyone if you all like.

This is interesting, because I have a Brux barrel ordered through Sin Arms to be finished/chambered in 7 WSM.

I didn't ask at Brux about the break-in procedure, because like you, I think it's overkill. But I did ask their opinion on nitriding and if it'd void warranty. Whoever I was corresponding with (Kelly; IIRC) wrote they though nitriding was unnecessary, but was stumped as to whether it would void warranty or not. I never heard back.

BTW, Midway has Federal Vital Shok 7 WSM 160 gr. Nosler Partition rounds in their July flyer for $24.49/box!
