Finally put the icing on the cake - kiwi shooter - 06-06-2023

A couple of years ago I bought a Howa Mini barreled action off my local gun shop
And brought a jefferson bottom metal of a guy who imports them
I also ordered a boyeds heritage
Walnut stock through the New Zealand agent (sadly we can’t import them ourselves very easily anymore)

Finally finished off with a checkering job and a nice new boom reduction device

Nice! How does it shoot? And does the suppressor show up in your field of view? I've thought about threading my Tikka but held off as I wasn't sure how much it would show in my FOV with a larger objective, and I don't really want to raise the scope.

I can’t see why Howa doesn’t sell a Mini Action like Kiwi Shooter’s. That Howa looks great! A rifle that looks that good is probably a tack driver.

Is this because it's a gun part? Curious why a Kiwi can't buy a piece of wood directly from the United States.

Yeah it’s now considered a gun part 3 years ago it wasn’t so you could just order one
So now you need an import permit which isn’t hard

The real problem is that a few years back boyeds put their prices up (like everyone else)
If you live in the usa you probably don’t know that gun parts under 100usd can be exported out of the USA with no export permit/license before the price rise they were 99usd so under need for a permit

So our end isn’t hard just fill in a form and hand it to the police for sign off
But getting a export permit form the usa is tricky and comes with a pretty hefty cost also

Nah can’t see it
I have owned a lot of suppressed rifles only been able to see it on 2 occasions with very old 22lr Suppressor’s which were massive… they aren’t restricted here like in the usa a suppressor is just a gun part so anyone with a license to own firearms can own suppressors so I think as a result our technology has improved significantly and our nz made ones are as good as any we get alot of imported European ones aswell which are extremely good
But we have 5 or 6 suppressor manufacturers here and they are all top notch
I use DPT (have done for years) nz made very nice modular design

Shoots very nice
It’s all glass bedded
Has a very nice worked trigger

I haven’t developed a load for it yet im still working though some loads i had left over from my ruger ranch
Shoots 1/2” with them and they aren’t even developed for the rifle

Nice one, got to be happy with 0.5MOA out of a hunting rifle.

I hear DPT exports his modular suppressors to Europe/UK.

Are DPT modular similar to Ghost, which also sells on Gun City's website? Wondering if the baffles are interchangeable and if there's any story behind whether it is the same guy with a cheaper line, or a knock-off.

Chost im pretty sure are Chinese made slightly different design aswell
I really like a European brand called sonic
They are very popular here
They are slightly heavier than the dpt as they have stainless internals where as dpt is pure aluminium
But man they are quiet my brother has a sonic on his 22-250 and i have a dpt on my 223 with the same barrel length on both rifles the 22-250 is about the same as the 223 even though its a much louder round without the can

That's interesting, I haven't heard of Sonic but watched a couple of videos just now. - Was the comparison with your brother apples for apples? By that I mean were the cans roughly the same volume and number of baffles, same size bleed chamber?

I know DPT went to a slightly narrower design which he calls MkII.

That spiral spine in the Sonic is interesting.

I like how they both come apart for cleaning.

My dpts are both older mk1’s I haven’t got a mk2 yet
My brothers is the sonic 45 in 7mm caliber he went bigger than needed to he can use it on other rifles if needed
That is meant to have a negative effect on the amount of noise reduction but doesn’t make much difference at all from experience he’s running the standard 5 baffles
My dpt’s are the same a tiny bit smaller.277(270cal) im running 7 baffles (5 is factory)

Both are very similar size suppressors the sonic maybe being the slightest bit bigger but my extra two baffles would give my dpt more volume overall than the sonic

The modular design is good because you can reduce the number of baffles to increase compactness
This will vastly reduce the effectiveness but a lot better than nothing and when you’re hunting your only shooting 1 or 2 shots so its worth having it a bit louder and easier to carry
But you can put more on to get it as quiet as possible if needed

If the seller of the stock offered a price structure change could the stock be ordered direct?

Example stock kit fully assembled or not.

Not sure to be honest I wouldn’t risk it it may work
It depends if the $100usd is per part or per package which I couldn’t tell you….

when the guy that has all the licenses to import etc charges landed cost plus 20% or so
Seem to remember mine being around $500nzd on my doorstep
May have only cost $400 direct but im willing to pay a bit extra and make the paperwork someone else’s problem
