Seems to be about the perfect action/rifle setup for the grendel.
Has any member here built off of one?
Seems like the easiest route would be to buy one in .223 and have the bolt face opened up. You would also have to have a mini 16 extractor installed.

Its been done and PTG sell bolts for the conversion. One issue is feeding whether internal box or detachable magazines.

with the advent of 3 or more mini bolt guns chambered in 6.5 Grendel ready to go off the showroom floor, the appeal of a conversion is significantly less. for most folks, getting a Rem m7 or similar type of bolt gun converted to 6.5 Grendel is more often than not, more expensive than just buying a mini action bolt rifle already chambered for the 6.5 Grendel, even if you have the donor action already and don't need to buy that too. so, while it can be done, and before the advent of the mini bolt guns that was the only way to get a bolt action Grendel, i suspect it is rarely done anymore. by the time you acquire a donor action or complete rifle, bolt face work or aftermarket bolt, aftermarket barrel, and the gunsmithing that goes with a project like that, you could likely buy 2 of the factory mini bolt action rifles in 6.5 Grendel. but if cost is not too big an issue and you have a real desire for something unique, then by all means go for it.

I've been a member here for a few years, and couldn't remember this topic coming up - so was just curious.
I agree buying a Howa mini and going from there is more economical route than buying a Model 7 and converting it.
If a person already had a 223 Model 7 and wanted to convert it the expense shouldn't be too bad.
The internal box mag and follower that comes with the Model 7 should work as is, so the only expense would be barrel, open bolt face, and install M16 extractor.

Its possible, and I dont have any experience with what your thinking about doing but.........I do have the Ruger, Howa and CZ Grendels and all magazines are NOT created equal. Theres a reason why there are 6.5 Grendel and 233/5.56 specific mags!
Ill concede that Im comparing detachable with an internal box magazines but from my experience the Grendel feeding can be a bit finicky. While the OAL may be the same, the shape of the case is not. And Im sure you could eventually figure out a solution if there was an issue. Just think its a bit of a leap to assume that the 223 internal mag should work as is.
If you decide to tackle it, keep us in the loop and let us know how it progresses.

Yes, it came up but so long ago that not even I can remember when. At the time, no one made a bolt for the Grendel so that would take some work. And, not many made barrels, let alone a custom barrel.
I think the Remington Model 7 concept would result is something head and shoulders over what is out there now and the project would be way easier to accomplish today than even five years ago.
I think you ought to go for it.

I was on the Remington website looking around. Message box popped up so I ask about a Model7 Threaded in 6.5 Grendel. To my surprise they said anything was possible. At least I wasn't ignored. At less than $800 it would be nice.

What about sending a Rem M7 in .223 to a reputable gunsmith like Danny Pedersen or Wayne York who could rebore, reset, and rechamber the factory barrel and open the bolt face? In a rounabout way that's how I ended up with a Rem M7 in 35 Rem.

I wonder if the HPK could do a conversion from, say a Savage with already closed box bottom (hog hunter or 12FV??), just rework the innards so it feeds the Grr-rounds..........:confused:

I wish Savage would release a 6.5 grendel already, they did a 7.62x39 and their center-feed detachable magazines feed well enough. The only issue I have is that Savage is how ugly they are...

I could not for the life of me get any 7.62x39 mags to feed for grendel. I had a short action Savage 10 and a custom criterion barrel... but the mag feeding left me stumped and disappointed.
Maybe I was just a klutz!
Shorten up the action and we'd be gtg.

Question WHY a M16 Extractor ? NEVER had a problem in dozens of Rem M7 - M700 rifles i have owned - Just Wondering as i'm thinking of a M7 Build too ! RJ

When a smith opens up the bolt face you cannot use a clip extractor like OEM. So the route is to go M16 or Sako.
Gre-Tan rifles is known for this so is LRI.

You're welcome. I didn't mean for my reply to be so short last night, but I was fallling asleep on the couch while typing.

You being in Canada - if you can do this across borders - LongRifles, Incorporated in South Dakota is well known for their gunsmithing. They do 5 axis blueprinting on Remingtons - with very quick turnaround.
Like you - I have never had any problems with Remington extractors and even bolt handles. However, in the circles of practical precision competitions I have read that Remington bolt handles pop off and extractors fail, but these are rifles that are being worked very hard in a short amount of time.
I personally have used a stock Remington 700 in 2 of said competitions without any problem, but many people are running 10K plus rounds a year out of their rifles which wears out equipment. I don't have the privilege of getting to shoot that much.
I really like my Howa Mini - I just got the bolt back yesterday from having the handle threaded.
If I had a model 7 already and I wanted a Grendel I would definitely consider going with the M7.
