Give me your opinion on this starter chrono before I buy please. Thanks yall.

What do you mean by "this starter"?
I've been using magnetospeed for well, 4 years or more and wouldn't leave home without it, so to speak.
(for load development that is).

Don’t have a chrono yet. Have some accurate loads I am ready to check out. The first gen magneto is on amazon for $180.

13232:

Do run a search because a very good thread on the Magnetospeed vs Lab Radar was pretty active about two months ago.

I suggest you find this thread and the four or five other threads specifically discussing chronographs and take a look at them.

Starter?

I started with a beta chrony.

I have a Caldwell screen type and the Magneto Sporter. Between the more expensive V3 and the Labradar..Go Labradar one machine does it all.

The sporter magnetospeed was a great improvement over my old sky-screen unit, really like it. One thing about the Labradar that a guy at our local range told me was it didn't work there as there are multiple overhead baffles down range to prevent errant rounds going beyond the 300 yard berm.
The magnetospeed makes getting the data much easier than before. Now if they would just open the range again!

I started out with the original version; nowadays it's usually called the sporter. Either way it's a great and economical chrono. The lab radar might be the cat's meow but either mgspd will do you proud. Develop a routine and double check the lineup on your barrels at home before you go out. For the sproter/ver. 1 you should use an aluminum cleaning rod sticking out the muzzle to check blade alignment with bullet path, in the ver. 3 it has its own flight path rod. The only barrels I had a bit of trouble with, and that wasn't much, were the sporter barrels because of their taper. but I used a small pad of tape under the front portion of the mount to level up the blade under the bullet path.

They are super accurate and you can also get the avg and SD of a group of shots. I record all the stuff in a small notebook and take it all back to my Excel spreadsheets.

Best advantages of the mgspd and labradar are that you don't shut down the range to set up, and they work sun or shade, evening or at noon.

Thanks all, really appreciate it.

I vote on the magnetospeed. The sporter is nice if you dont have a mussle device (ie supressor). I have successfully used the unmodified sporter with my 40mm supressor, its just requires you to increase sensitivity. If money is no object, get a V3. It comes with a better display. But you can upgrade the sporter with new bayonet or screen later, esp if you are in the states and can deal with magnetospeed directly.

bonus over chrony: no setup infront of the shooting possition
Bonus over labradar: price, and it is easier to use. It has issues sometimes with triggering. You also need more batteries and/or usb-battery pack and stand.

I have owned the magneto speed V5 for several years now. I love it, it’s simple to use, and very accurate. If you only want to spend for a sporter, they are good too. I got the V5 because I like the screen display and the attachments much better.
Someone mentioned the labradar. It’s also a good chrono. Different camp. It all depends on your preference. If you know someone who owns one ,try, before you buy. That’s what I did. And I prefer the V5. But, I don’t Chrono every shot. I just do five shot averages with my handloads.

I’ve have a LabRadar and “that guy” is only 1/2 correct! Wink There a 2 trigger settings on the LabRadar, Doppler and Audio. The Doppler is NOT recommended at ranges with overhead baffles, especially if there is any “steel” in them. In that case the Audio triggers works best.

If your only going to use the chrono with a couple of guns, I’d recommend the Magnetospeed Sporter, or the full blown top end model if money is not an issue. If you have a whole battery of guns and want to cycle back and forth quickly between them, then the LabRadar can make a lot of sense. Having said that, the LabRadar can be finicky at times and is prone to being triggered by other shooters at a crowded range and “can” experience trouble tracking really fast small projectiles. Think 17 Hornet, some 204, even lite weight 243 bullets at times.

All in all, I think the Sporter is probably the best “value”, and the most forgiving and consistently reliable to use, IMO. Cool

13232,

Starter?

I started with a Chrony - it still works, but now use a Lab Radar.

They all have their advantages and disadvantages.

question about the magneto speed.
how much barrel is needed to attach it?
i have an 18" hand guard with a 20" barrel
by the tme threads are on i figre only 1-1.5" of actual barrel is available

Considering magneto speed chrono - biodsl - 07-10-2020

You're gonna need 2 5/8".

Considering magneto speed chrono - mdram - 07-10-2020

well that would be an issue, i will contact them and see about things

No reason to contact them. The base of the bayonet for the graph is 2 5/8 inches, so that's what you have to have to mount it on the barrel.

Now since your just wanting to get the velocity data, you can take the handguard off and just let the barrel sit on a front bag and get your data, remove the graph and then put the handguard back on.

i was wondering about requirements for distance from the bore to bayonet, and the offset of the bayonet to the mounting surface
i could always fab something up to mount it to the hand guard, if the dims work out
i remember seeing a dimensioned pic someplace, but cant find it anymore

The range for the R & P club I belong to is right next to an international airport. There are a couple of large radar stations on the airport. One of them is about a quarter mile from the firing line I would use for load testing. Could these large radars cause interference with labradar chronographs? I've never seen anyone at the range using one.

Think it's 1/8 of inch from bottom of bore line to top of bayonet surface. What I have found is you want your muzzle or muzzle device to stop just short of the long flat area of the bayonet.
