No, I don't mean one that has just fallen into a slimy swamp! I have always liked how smooth the action is on Lee Enfield rifles and once even considered converting one.* I am aware that part of the perceived slickness comes from the half-cock on opening, final-cock on closing of the bolt, but nevertheless.... Of the moderately priced actions on the market, which seem to have the smoothest operation? I guess that I should also ask about more expensive actions as well (Surgeon, etc), just in case, well, you know, a guy has got to have dreams.
*I eventually grew out of my WECSOG** phase, though.

Howa, hands down. CZ sloppy, binds, Ruger is shit. Howa needs to get rid of that cheap shit plastic mag system. Go BDL and make a good stock for the 6.5 Mini-Action A2

Ive got a WWII German Mauser action that my dad had sporterized for hunting.He kept it 8mm and drilled and tapped for a scope.It is by far the smoothest bolt action I own. Ive had bolts worked by my gunsmith and theyre still not like that 98 Mauser.

Tikka, then step up a big notch n price to a Sako or Cooper. Customs Borden is another name to add to the above. Dakota for a big $ will also make you a smooth Grendel.
Smoothest actions I have ever had Mannlicher 1903 in 6.5X54, an old Krag is smooth also. Both a lot slicker than the Sako, Cooper and Tikkas that are in the safe. I thought one time about trying to rework and old project MS 1903 that I have to the Grendel but for now will keep it as a good shooting 6.5X54

Krags are smooth because the metal is too hard. They dont make good high pressure guns.

I too have a dream of spending too much money on a bolt action. I wanna take my howa bolt to get pvd treated. I have an ar bolt and damn its slick. Its dirty gaser and the crud wipes off with a rag and its still slick. I feel like the lube slides off. This should be the same process

Tikka and parent company Sako have well deserved reputations - as do Remington 700 and Winchester Model 70 - for smooth, strong & well-designed actions. The military bolt action rifles are smooth because they have much greater intentional tolerance built-in in order to function in less than ideal circumstances (aka takes a lickin' but keeps on tickin'). Howa and CZs are good too but the CZs require a bit of wearing in before they get slick.

There used to be a Sportsmans Warehouse here in Indiana with a CZ 527 Varmint in .204 Ruger(for $479, I believe) that I used to go in and check out just because it was so satisfying to cycle the bolt. It also had some curl in the wood. If it had been an American instead of Varmint and chambered for .223(or a Grendel, but they didnt exist), I would have bought it.
Anyway, that little 527 was the single slickest new rifle Ive ever handled. Any rifle at all would have to go to an old Turkish M98 that looked to have seen some pretty heavy use.

Granted it's not bad but it is nowwheres in comparison to any 700 action I have ever felt and not even close to the howa mini I had.
Maybe it's just my action. But for my first experience with a cz action it's no smooth. Now I will never part with it because it's such a accurate rifle but it's not what I had hoped for after so many folks saying CZ 527's were a smooth action.

The reason I wont part with any of my CZ rifles because they are accurate.In fact,theyre so accurate I dont even pay attention to the action anymore. I just worry about where Im gonna place that shot.
