Failure to eject/ bolt stuck - prudii - 05-25-2019
This is a custom build I built from parts I was told where sourced from group buys here. The barrel is a 20" faxon and the bolt has the monster logo on it. The upper is new frontier armory side charging upper and it has a wojtek weaponry clamp on adjustable gas block. The carrier is a toolcraft I took from another rifle.
When fired the bolt does not move and cases must be mortared out. I have tried e lander, AA, and CPD mags and I can manually cycle the bolt thought an entire mag without an issue.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you know for a fact the gas block is aligned properly?

Sounds like the rifle isn't getting any gas at all. Double check the gas block is lined up, not closed or plugged up with something somehow.

Definitely sounds like a gas issue except having to mortar out the brass. Have you checked the headspace?

The gas system has no gas.
After firing with no gas it is quite normal for cases to be stuck in the chamber and have to 'mortar' them out. Those with an adjustable gas system turned fully off will know this. But you can still manually cycle properly headspaced rounds perfectly into and out of the chamber without firing.

Good morning Klem,
This is all new to me. When you say stuck in the chamber being normal do you mean to just tap it out or is the case really stuck normally? It just seems to me that anytime a case needs mortared out, something is wrong. Maybe to problem is greater with more straight walled cases like the Grendel???

I have adjusted the gas system, I had the gas block flush with the shoulder, I've offset it by .030 using a feeler gauge. I'll take it to the range later to see if that solves the problem.

Not peculiar to just the Grendel - peculiar to the AR. I've used an Adams Arms piston in 223 with the gas set to OFF. The spent case is stuck in the chamber and requires a decent pull on the charge handle to get it moving. I've even see someone put the butt on the ground and use the heel of their boot on the charge handle but that's overkill and not something I would advise. Usually you can get it out by hand but needs more strength than usual.

I just had a similar issue with mine this week. Took it a part to clean it and found the gas key had come loose and sheared the back bolt. In process of fixing it now...

The adj. GB you have has a hole in the top to be able to properly aline it over the gas hole of the barrel, a feature I really like,can't remember the drill bit I use but it works perfectly by putting bit shank thru top of block into barrel gas hole then tighten down. After installing GB I then install gas tube. Hope this helps.

When did wojetk start putting that in their gas blocks? I have 3 of their adjustable gas blocks and none of mine have that.
Newest one is probably 6 to 8 months old now.

I thought about that after I posted so sent email to them to get scoop have yet to receive reply. My 3 are about 2 weeks old so they are a bit newer than yours. Will post their reply when I get one. Funny thing though, I posted a positive review the same time I got their GB's which has yet to show up on their site. In it I commented on the addition of that hole, want to order more yet also want to make sure of what I'm receiving.
PS Hole still not showing in pictures on their site either???

Mine doesn't have the hole on top. I am almost 100 positive i have it lined up properly however it still doesn't work. Its not hard at all to extract the cases but the bcg is not moving at all when fired. Ive tried a different BC and had the same result.

It still not working. Ive really got no idea at this point. Its not the bolt carrier ived tried two different ones. I cant find anything wrong with the bolt itself. Theres no obvious case damage and it will hand cycle a whole 20 rounds without issue. I plugged the chamber with a spent case and blew canned air down the gas tube and it came out the muzzle.
Im at a loss here. Probably just going to take it to a gunsmith at this point.

Before I took it to a gun Smith I would try a non adjustable gas block. All symptoms point to gas issue, a new gas block and gas tube is a cheap double check to identify the issue.

I agree with Hunter...If you have to jerk fired cases out but non-fired cases manually cycle fine it means there's no gas.
Is the hole from the gas key into the carrier blocked? Does your bolt have three gas rings?
