Looking for suggestions on a stripped upper - Mecharius - 10-21-2015
Initially I was planning on buying a DPMS upper, they are readily available and relatively inexpensive. But the more I think about it, the mode I convince myself to seek out quality.
I am working on what is both my first Grendel build as well as my first AR build and am not sure what I should be looking for in a quality stripped upper receiver. I plan on this being my target rifle.

After several weeks of trying to make a decision, that is the barrel I chose.
So, in the opinion of the members of this forum, what would be a good upper receiver for me to go with?

I can get the CMMG MK4 Upper Receiver Assembly for $125. Not sure if that would be much a step up from the DPMS though.

For a 24", I would go billet. Get a Seekins or Mega or PF billet receiver set, and don't look back.

Billet upper for target rifle imo.. Lower forged is fine imo, if it looks good mated to the up upper

Don't discount the Vltor MUR1, it is a very good upper! Gives a superb fit to many lowers, something I cannot say about the spikes SAR3.

I was just looking at that one after my last post. Seems to have a lot of good reviews online. I won't be finalizing my decision until the end of the month. So I will see what else I can find written out this and the other I was looking at.

A Precision Firearms upper will look nice and be true. Plus Mark can set you up with a matched billet set that'll be nice and tight for sure.

For my 18" build I'm going to use the Vltor MUR you can get it around 165.00, if I was going to go with another one I'd choose Seekins Precision, then Precision Firearms only due to a discount. PF has excellent machining and Mark is a class act!

Vltor MUR uppers are on sale at JSE Surplus for $150 + shipping, they appear to include forward assist and ejection port door components. Other than having to sign for packages, they have been good to deal with. www.jsesurplus.com

If your going to order a MUR1, why not order it from Mark? His price is a tad higher but myself, I would rather support someone who supports us! Just a thought.

I use a side charged upper, very beefy, 7075 T6 billet....

If I did go with that receiver, that's exactly what I would do. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra. But I still haven't settled on which receiver I will be going with

Personally, not a fan of the side charging.

For the PF billet upper receivers, what is the difference between the standard and the mod 1? What am I missing here that raises the price by a few dollars?
