Steve Scalise (R-La.): "...so many students knew this was going to happen."
That's absurd. This isn't Minority Report. No one knew it was going to happen.
Paul Ryan (R-Wis.): "We believe the best way is to focus on stopping people who should not be getting any guns from getting guns in the first place."
Who decides which people should not be allowed to have guns? And how would it be determined? Should prospective gun buyers be required to pass a psychiatric exam?

This is going to turn into a "Report thy Neighbor" kind of thing.
My GF two daughters go shooting with us, and compete, both are still in High School. I can see backlash coming. Just because a person shoots, someone will be media induced terrified of the fact and report them according to their own delusions.Sticks
Catchy sig line here.

On Jan. 5, the caller left information on Nikolas Cruz's "desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting," the FBI said.
In a statement, the FBI said "a person close to" Cruz called the agency's public tip line on Jan. 5 and left information on Cruz's "gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting."LIFE member: NRA, TSRA, SAF, GOA

Identify Prohibited Persons
In order to stop nut cases like Cruz, Paddock, and others "who should not be getting any guns from getting guns in the first place" (as Paul Ryan said), new standards will be necessary.Last edited by stanc; 03-17-2018, 03:37 AM.

E.g. Numerous domestic violence instances; mental defective
Many of these shooters, like Cruz, should have been Prohibited Persons. The failings are typically with local law enforcement or with lack of reporting prohibited persons to NICS. In Cruz's case, both local LE and FBI dropped the ball on numerous occasions. Twice by FBI; seemingly countless times by local LE.
Additionally:
Gabby Giffords shooter was "known" to local law enforcement over drugs and bizarre behaviors...missed opportunities.
Aurora, Colorado theater shooter was known mental defective.
Sutherland Springs, Texas church shooter already met the definition of prohibited person but failed to be reported to NICS by USAF. (Subsequent investigation found over 4,000 former military members with qualifying dishonorable discharges that were never reported to NICS).
Oregon community college shooter was known mental defective.
Virginia Tech shooter...known mental defective.
Ryan didn't name Paddock...don't think he named anyone in particular with the quote above. But he could have named quite a few that, under current law, shouldn't have had access to guns.
Would it have stopped all? Heavens no...Paddock was definitely a sleeper.
Personally, I'd rather they do a better job at enforcing current laws versus making new laws that won't be enforced.LIFE member: NRA, TSRA, SAF, GOA

Yes. They should pass a psych exam. Or should I say we. I know peoples that shouldn’t have guns and my people and I have taken them away. Not because we think they will go school banging, but because they have no use for them.Member since 2011, data lost in last hack attack
