Old Shooter, New Grendel Owner in Australia

    Hi All,
    A quick intro;
I've been a hunter since buying my first rifle in 1976 with my first pay packet after leaving school at 15 years old. All of my hunting is for feral animal management, but I eat all of the deer taken and as much wild pork as I have room for in the freezer.
I currently work full time in the local gun store and as a range officer at the attached pistol club. As such I get to see lots of new "toys" and manage to resist temptation most of the time.
A couple of years ago I realised that there were no gaps in my rifle complement and couldn't think of any cartridge I needed. HOWEVER, when a friend whose business is manufacturing high quality jacketed rifle projectiles started making 6.5mm bullets I found that gap. I needed something in a 264 cal.
We had a Ruger American Ranch come into the shop, chambered in 7.62x39 and I was impressed with it's weight, fit and feel and it's compactness. That was the catalyst for my hunt for one chambered in 6.5 Grendel. The Grendel has never become popular down here in the antipodes and our national suppliers had none in stock. Luckily the only gun store I could find in my home state with one in stock was only 1 1/2 hours drive from home so I bought it sight unseen over the phone. The Grendel is destined to become my new light-weight carry rifle for hunting in the hills on foot.
    It joins in the safe:
    Weihrauch HW97K - 22 air
    Benjamin Marauder - 25cal air
Evanix WIndy City - 357cal air
    Sportco model 62 - 22LR
    Brno No1 - 22LR
    Ruger American - 223
SCSA Taipan - 223 (Australian made pump action)
    Lithgow LA102 - 223
    Lithgow LA102 - 243
    Lithgow LA102 - 308
    Sportco Hornet - 22 K Hornet
    Sportco 33 - 6mm TCU (re-barreled)
    Howa 1500 Varmint - 22-250 Ackley
    Howa 1500 Varmint - 6mm Creedmoor
    Browning BLR - 243
Rossi Circuit Judge - 44 mag
    Remington 7600 - 308
    Reminton 700 Long Ranger - 25-06 Ackley

    Plus several handguns :-)

How many other Aussie are active here?

Welcome to the forum That_Aussie! From your resume sounds like you’ll fit right in on this forum. There are numerous members on this forum from down under who reside in Australia and New Zealand. Klem is probably the most active and is a wealth of knowledge. I assume you’ll need to reload your own ammo for the 6.5 Grendel since there might be limited availability of factory ammunition. There is all kind of information in the post on this forum. There is a google custom search feature I regularly use with a link below.

        Thanks Vascar2,

I guessed that Klem was from Downunder as he was mentioning ADI powders and one of the local gun stores. I have already been using your custom search, it works a treat.

I'm a tinkerer with loads for all of my firearms, doing things out of the ordinary, just because it makes me happy. Like shooting 30gr Barnes Varmint Grenades from my 22-250 Ackley at 4,515 feet per second. :-)

I have 3 projectiles I'll be shooting from the Grendel. 90gr Speer BTHP, 123gr Hornady BTHP, and 140gr Rexem BTHP. I will have a play with some reduced loads with the 140s too, just for giggles.
