  • getting in the grendel game

    hey guys,

Ive been lurking for a month or so now just reading and trying to learn as much as possible. I have started a grendel project but am at a stand still waiting on barrel availability. I ordered a Satern 264lbc barrel from midway but now that satern is going grendel again, im going to cancel my backorder and I think order directly from satern since midway says they are only going to do lbc for now. Ive read so much good about the satern barrels that I think it will be worth the wait. I am undecided now as to whether I should go 20 or 24 inch. Ill mostly be just target shooting and hunting deer here in georgia with it. Target shooting will probably be out to 800 yds+, any suggestions on length? BTW Ive enjoyed reading all you guys comments and am glad to be part of the hoarde!

A 20" barrel will get you out to 800yds + a 24" barrel will get you there a few milliseconds sooner. I chose a 24" bull barrel for the weight and a bit of extra velocity for 1200yds+. I don't hunt meat with a rifle so I'm not concerned with packing it through the woods. When I shoot long distance; I'm usually shooting in the prone position from the bed of my pick-up. For me, my rifle is not what I would call heavy or cumbersum; at 14 lbs with scope and a 10 round mag I could easily pack it a mile through the brush, my day pack weighs 30 lbs and I cover several miles during a hunt. I guess it just depends on what kind of hunting you do; drive around till something jumps out in front of you, spot-n-stalk, or sit in a stand or a blind. My 20" bull barreled .223 weighs about 11 lbs w/scope and 10 rnd. mag, so a Grendel with similar dimensions should weigh close to that.

Oh! and welcome to the horde!

I dont have to do much hiking here, 1/2 mile tops, so not concerned with weight. I guess i am more concerned with manueverability in the stand, although I have hunted with a 26" .308 so that shouldnt be an issue. the only time I think I would rather have a 20" is on the polaris riding and shooting hogs.

        Welcome!

You'll get about 100 feet per second more out of a 24 compared to a 20. The 24's tend to be a little front heavy. If you are shooting with a bipod, no problem. I don't know what it will be like in a stand.

If weight is not an issue, you can weight the butt to improve the balance.

From what I have been reading a 20" would do you fine>
I am looking to do a 18 or 20 myself.
You say Satern is doing a Grendel barrel?

yea, satern is starting back up on the grendel barrel. Last I talked to kim over there they were getting ready to start production back on the G barrels. They will continue to do LBC for someone that wants it. I think after all the reading ive done here that the Grendel chamber is way to go being more versatile than the LBC. THanks for feedback guys. I cant wait to get this one going, Ive built two 5.56's but the Grendel has me excited.

Howdy! I have a 20" Satern barrel and have been very happy with it. I shoot 1k on a fairly regular basis at a local range if conditions are good. If it's too windy I stick with 750 and in. I have stretched it to 1140 but temps were high and wind was nil.

I had the same dilemma as you in choosing a barrel length. I went with the 20" medium profile and glad I did. It's just right for carrying in the field and still performs well for long range target shooting. If I were only target shooting with it I would go with the 24"

Welcome. I think an 18 or a 20 would be a good compromise if you are going to stalk the dense woods in your region. I'm not sure what ranges you are able to shoot at that will have 800 to 1000yds, but I do know there are some thick woods in Georgia.

I recently got 24" gun velocities out of my 16" Grendel with factory 123gr Moly Scenars at 2488-2582fps, which really surprised me. Chrono was at least 15ft from the muzzle. You should be able to hit 2600fps with a 20" gun pushing the 123gr bullets with that same ammo. It's the Precision Firearms 123gr Moly Scenar load in Lapua brass.

All of my hunting will be here on the plantation with open fields, longest deer shot probably 550yds. Im fortunate that I get to do all my target shooting here on the place as well and can stretch out right at 1000.Thanks for input guys.

If you're shooting from a stand exclusively, you can go heavier/longer. If you plan to get out of the stand and stalk around some, the 20" makes a lot of sense.

Sound like a 24" barrel would work for you and if you don't like it you could always take a couple inches off. Can't add 'em back on. Welcome
