Grendel stalker in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia

Recently retired Navy. Have shot in Fleet Forces competition matches at Dam Neck, so I can hold my own with an AR15. I primarily shoot a custom built A4 configured competition rifle. Also in the safe is a BCM 18" middy with a KMR rail just for fun.

With a lot more time at home now, I am looking to bag my first Grendel soon. I have a Spikes lower that is built already which uses a Wilson Combat TR-TTU-M2 2-stage trigger. I think it will do nicely for a Grendel upper.

I have just started to look at barrels. I am interested primarily in a 20" but would consider an 18". Started by looking at Shilen barrel/bolt combos but also very interested in Lilja barrels.

Any sage advice, words of wisdom and friendly suggestions that members are willing to impart would be sincerely appreciated!!

How tall are you? If over 6ft and wanting to do a lot of 1000yd shooting down near sea level, lean towards the 20".

If you want to hunt with it and do general target shooting throughout the year, get either a 16", 18", or 20".

Your best options for money right now are complete uppers from AA.

Welcome aboard, I bought a Shilen 20" match profile barrel and bolt from Midway. I really like my 20" Shilen barrel in 6.5 Grendel which exceeds my normal shooting abilities. The barrel is not threaded which was fine with me. The Shilen barrel Midway sells is a match profile commonly used in high power/DCM match rifles. The Shilen barrels sold by Midway are 1:9 twist and mine stabalizes 123 grain match bullets out to 1000 yards. I have never tried the heavier 139-140 + grain bullets in my 1:9 twist barrels. If you are planning on shooting the heavier bullets you might look at barrels with 1:8 twist.

I tend to shoot the lighter bullets in the 6.5 Grendel more than the heavier 139+ grain bullets so I'm satisfied with 1:9 twist.
