I went through a pain staking task of building the lightest “useable” 6.5 Grendel I could assemble; by usable, I mean not cut/drilled/mangled to reduce weight… I scaled and logged every single component and swapped out various parts/brands for lighter components shaving ounces here and there which all add up to weight savings. I also used a Bushmaster Carbon upper receiver and Plum crazy lower receiver with a Mega single stage tactical trigger… The complete rifle with Magpul magazine (no ammo) weights 5.45 pounds total. This gun feels like a toy when you pick it up, people are always amazed it’s a “real” gun…the weight reduction is really noticeable…only 6.60 pounds with the 3.5x35 Trijicon ACOG sight (not included).

...the mags are just pmags that I have "cleaned" the front were the bullet tip slides out for a little more clearance when being slide into feed ramps; I started using these when I was having trouble getting 10 round grendel mags for bench shooting. The modified 20 round pmags seem to work reliably with only 8 rounds in them, 10 tops; If you load that mag with more than 8 or so, it becomes less pleasant... If you want more bullets at one time, the 6.5 grendel specific mags are needed; They function fine with the low volume and look pretty... If I duracoat a rifle, I usually use 6.5 specific mags and duracoat to match.

Looks like very sweet work. I've thought about a carbon fiber gun using the Bushmaster (Carbon 15) receivers before. That Lightweight would be a nice carry gun for hunting, or a car gun.

Question on the Ultra Lite Grendel. On the Bushmaster upper,
1] was it the older style with the fwd assist and ejection port door, or the newer one that lacks both of those? http://www.bushmaster.com/products.asp?cat=601
2] what barrel and barrel nut did you use? I am looking into using the Bushmaster Carbon 15 upper for a different build and saw this FAQ http://www.bushmaster.com/faqs/afmvi...ghlight=carbon, which seems to denote you have to use certain barrels and certain barrel nuts. The Barrel nuts they used, apparently don't allow for the install of most free-float handgaurds.
