  • Vortex Optics New 1-6x24 Gen II HD

    It's only 10" long too!

At BoomerShoot, I had the opportunity to feel the click values and see the glass quality of a bunch of different scopes in the same conditions.

I made it a point to hit all the higher end rifle optics makers' booths at SHOT this year, and get a feel for some of the new glass on the market as well.

I was surprised to see that several new offerings from Leupold still have very mushy turret click feel to them, while some companies have gotten the message and used positive, clear click values to their turrets.

The new $4000 Leupold Tactical line still has mushy turrets, but the glass is nice.

I was surpised to see that one of my fellow coaches had gone with a Razor HD 5-20x50 on his Savage 6.5 Creedmoor, and I had the opportunity to blast a bunch of boomers with it at 700yds. I don't see any real difference in glass quality between the Razor HD and the NightForce NXS scopes. Vortex has an awesome warranty service and customer support network as well, although I haven't needed it.

I now have a Viper PST 2.5-10x44, and a Viper HS Tactical 5-15x44 on my Grendel and .260 Rem. This new 1-6x would make a great 3-gun and hunting scope for the AR15.

        Agreed!

Vortex: I started to get excited until I saw they list an MSRP of $1599.00 for their 1X4 model. I expect their 1X6 will be pretty pricey. Not saying it won't be worth it, or that the other scopes in that niche aren't even pricier, just bummed that it'll likely be higher up the price tree than I'd hoped....

I saw the first MAP at $1399, then on Vortex's site, I see $1899. I doubt I'll ever pay for a 1-6x at that price, unless it has amazing glass, and I'm rolling in dough.

The Viper HS Tactical is on my .260 Rem now, and is a solid scope. I think I actually miss the field of view of the 2.5-10x44 and the finer crosshair on the PST, since the HS Tactical has a Mil Dot reticle. I was still able to rapidly shoot 6"x8" explosive targets at 400yds as fast as I could index the reticle and pull the trigger with it, so it is plenty capable. I still wish it had a 50mm or even 56mm objective lens, and a fine crosshair.

This looks like a very nice scope. I can't wait to get my hands on one. I'm really glad to see so many new 1-6X's coming out on the market. Between this, the Leupold MK6 and VX6, Bushy 1-6.5X, Sightron 1-7 and the SWFA 1-6HD it's a great time to be shopping for a "do it all" scope. The power jump from 4 to 6X really does make a significant difference at longer ranges.

The only one I've used so far is the SWFA, but I'm anxious to see the others. But after using the 1-6, my 1-4 will be for sale shortly.

In my opinion they're pretty much going to obsolete the 1-4X's which have been the mainstay for so long. For the mid-upper price range, at least. I think 1-4's will always have a home in the lower price ranges, but I think the days of people paying $1000-$2000 for them are long over.

Got one of these bad boys on order, but not sure when they'll release. Gonna put it on my 16" Grendel. I'll be selling a 1-4 PST :-)

Yeah, I think this 1-6x would make an ideal scope for a 16" and under Grendel used for hunting, and intermediate range shooting. The reticle was designed by Miculek, so we know that is oriented towards 3-gun. I'm looking forward to seeing these in-hand later this year.

I had a chance to look through one of these at the range last week:

tactical scopes, benchrest scopes, hunting scopes, scope rings, scope bases, binoculars, spotting scopes

Awesome scope. Very spendy, but 1-10 X was impressive!

I'm going to ask them this week if they are going to do one with and exposed larger windage turret. I think with the ballistic reticle out to 600 for a 16" gun, you wouldn't be cranking the elevation turrets, but windage at 600 would be a must.

hold off for windage; you can't really chase the wind by dialing because the conditions would often change by the time you take the shot
