    Talk me out of it

    Horde...
I'm about to pull the trigger on a Viper PST 4-16x50 EBR1 MRAD. It's going into an American Defense AD Recon 20MOA mount. This scope is going on my AA Grendel Hunter. It will be used for popping yotes out beyond 500 yards and used during deer and elk season. Am I solid with this scope? I've been looking at the Viper PST 6-24x50 but I'm slightly worried about over scoping when taking shorter distance shots. I figured I could ultimately reach out close to the 1000 yard range with the 4-16. Your thoughts and advice are welcomed.

The 4-16 is a nice balance of weight/length and capable of reaching out to 1000 if ur just ringing steel. While in between builds and scopes I had a shoddy 12x on my grendel and was hitting 8/10 at just under 1k. Not grouping all that well but hits on a 10" plate with regularity. You'll appreciate the smaller scope when carrying for a distance yote hunting.

I would go with the 6-24 if you want to place kill shots at those ranges and to target shoot to 1000. I have a 6-24 on my 308 and have never felt over scoped unless I was stalking my prey in thick brush.

I have a diamondback 4-12 on my grendel and I dont really think it is good past 400.

Just my thoughts hope it helps, more experenced members will chime in im sure.

If you have a Cabela's store available - check out their "Bargain Cave" or such - the one near me regularly has Vortex "refurbs" on sale. I just got a VORTEX PST 1x4 for half price.

I think you will be good to go with the 4-16x50. I was going to put that same scope on my grendel until I got a too good to be true deal on a 6-24x50 PST. I know a lot of guys who shoot regularly to 1000 with less than a 16 max power. With yours being a hunting rig I feel you will be happier with the lower power option for quick shots. I almost never turn any of my hunting gun scopes past 5 unless i'm sighting them in.

Thanks for the input. I just clicked "ORDER" on the 4-16.

When if you find it necessary you can add a mini red-dot to the scope of at a 45 degree later. Great for short shots and close running shots too.

Been a fan of the Grendel from the very beginning and haven't second guessed that choice one time.

              Aim small, miss small!

You'll be happy with the 4-16, I promise you that. I was in pretty much the same boat as you, and opted for the 4x on the low end for hunting purposes. At my elevation (4300'+) I can still go 1000 yards all day long, and routinely push it to 1400+

I like your choice in scopes. If it were a pure target gun, sure go for the more magnification however on a hunting rifle I never want to be over scoped for those close range shots which seem to happen where I hunt more often than the long range shots. My 3 favorite hunting rifles:
The 7mm-08 with an 18 inch barrel has a 2X7 and is deadly to 350 yards
The Grendel and 6.5-284 both have 2.5-15 scopes and with then turned down to the lowest setting when a coyote or small hog has shown up inside 250 yards they have worked on their lowest setting. When hunting I am not trying to shoot half or less MOA but within MOA of the critter I am shooting. Sure aim small miss small but that small point is in the center of the vitals I am shooting at.

My longest hunting shots have been a little over 500 yards and were with a 7mmSTW with a 3-9 duplex scope and it worked on all the shots over 500 yards except for one and that one I was given the wrong yardage by 70+ yards which made a difference in hold point.

Basically saying good choice, have fun and enjoy

I ended up going with the 6-24x50 HS-T moa, going on the ADM 20 moa mount. We will have to compare impressions when we finally get them to the range. Has vortex confirmed your order? I sent the order form in and haven't got a response yet. Also, travis said there's a 2 month lead on the HS-T right now... Have you heard anything different?
