    HELP a noob

Well, I did it, but, I don't know what I did!! I was going to change uppers on my AR but one pin refused to budge, a tiny tap with small hammer and punch got it loose, and all was well. While it was apart I figured I would see if my buffer had any indicator on it to tell me what it is. No marking anywhere but it is very long with some loose weights inside, so I decided I would save that mystery for later. Got ready to put it all back together and I noticed the safety lever was mostly out of the rcvr.........pushed it back in..........now totally loose and the safety does not work, locked on safe and no tension on the lever at all!

What did I do and how do I fix it?

    all help greatly appreciated

Did you remove your pistol grip?

The pistol grip houses the spring and detent that drive captivation and positioning of the safety/selector.

If those parts aren’t installed, the safety/selector will spin easily and fall out.

buffer weights are supposed to move inside. that is normal

as LRRPF52 said, pistol grip is where you need to look if your safety is being wonky. sounds like $8 worth of parts at most though to fix this and 1 tool.

Google and YouTube is your friend, for finding good detailed videos on how to break down and reassemble the ar-15 platform.

Also... get and keep some spare parts in your tool drawer. Like joebob or other sellers, they have "AR15 spare parts" or "AR15 essential parts"... some of the installation itty bitty pieces/parts that seem to get lost somehow.
I try to have most of the various spare parts stashed, even a pistol grip or 2. And a spare bcg, extractor, so on and so on. Plus, like A5, lots of websites and you tubes on how to build/take apart/put together this lil gun.

I keep a good supply of detents and springs for AR-15’s plus other assorted parts. I have extra bolts and extractors plus some different size pins for trigger/hammer.

I pretty much have the major details of disassembly, cleaning, changing fore grips, barrels etc. covered, for the most part. I really don't like this format that much as it just doesn't fit me all that well. That is why I can easily overlook things like detents and springs that are hidden and not a captured part. I have three of each coming, although now, I will probably never need them again. Lack of use breeds mistakes of this sort.

                thanks again

About the "format"... are you talking about adequate cheek weld, or about pistol grip angle? If so, there are parts that remedy that... I have switched over to adjustable butt stocks with cheek and OAL adjustments, and a more vertical pistol grip, didn't like the "stock" setups, the "stock" pieces forced me into questionable ergonomics.
I do, however, still personally favor the bolt action setup.

It seems that the design gets my eye too high without contorting myself into uncomfortable and less than desirable positions just to get proper sight/scope alignment! Does someone make a stock that solves my problem?

                    Thanks

Use shorter scope mounts and use a stock that has adjustable or replaceable check sets to get a better check weld and eye/optic alignment.

Also the AR-15 isn't a bolt action. You shoot a bolt action but you "Drive" a AR-15. It takes a different hold to shoot a ar15.

You have to hold the AR-15 with more of a "tighter" grip both front and rear hand when compared to the bolt action.

I'm lucky, just about any Magpul stock fits me almost perfectly, so that's what I use. Magpul has several "carbine" stocks that have cheek peice replacement parts that allow you to fit it better to yourself.

It pays to put some money into aftermarket parts both external and internal for the AR-15 platform.

It really is the LEGO set of guns.

Post us some pics of your gun and how it's setup and we can probably help you a lot better.

The do-all butt stock is (carbine) Luth-AR MBA3, or magpul has a "PRS-lite" (carbine) that works also.
Which ever one is at the best price for you, google them.
I have them both, they have the adjustable cheek riser and adjustable length like A5 is talking about, all in one package.

If your eyes are too high, your mount is too low. An adjustable stock will only raise your eye level.

Thank you Stonehendge, That is my problem, with a scope, I can always find taller mounts to get where I need to get(probably ugly and questionable for function), But lately I have been trying get my Compass Lake .22 upper with iron sights dialed in and I have to be missing something basic on this format, as I have to look like the hunchback of Notre Dame getting settled in behind the sights.

This may make my decision on what goes first easier as I am no spring chicken.

As for pictures, my computer skills are very lacking, but I will try...............may take some time!! But I think it is a standard A2 stock(might be wrong about that too), so all pictures would just be repeats of something you all know as 2nd nature. I don't know how anything gets away from the straight back buffer tube!

                              Thanks again
