    Painted My First Stock Today

It's not a Grendel, but it was still a fun project. Sometime in the next couple of years, I'm going to be rebuilding an old Ruger M77 my grandfather gave to me before I was big enough to even shoot it. I am strongly thinking of building my own stock and basing it loosely off the JP AMCS Benchrest design. Regardless, I have decided I want to paint the stock myself.

I decided last week that I would do a practice piece on my old Ruger 10/22 that was in desperate need of a makeover. Let me know what you guys think!

    How it started:

    Sanded down:

5-6 coats of rattle can black, sanding between coats to eliminate grain:

I let it sit for a few days to fully cure, then sprayed it with a pearlized semi-transparent white. As soon as it was sprayed I wrapped it in saran wrap, smeared it around a bit, and pealed it off to give it a marbled texture

Next came a light coat of highly reduced iridescent blue:

Followed by another very light coat of pearlized white wrapped in saran wrap, then a healthy dose of candy blue:

Then finally, topped it off with 2 coats of high-gloss automotive clear:

After it cures over the weekend, I'll wet sand it and buff it out to REALLY bring out the shine.

All in all I think it turned out pretty good considering it was not only my first gun stock, but my first time attempting this painting technique period

Might be the first stock you've painted but surely not your first time using a spray gun.
            Looks GREAT!

Thanks guys! And no, definitely not my first time spraying I make my living working in a shop that specializes in refinishing cabinets, front doors, furniture...basically anything wood. I've been spraying for 7-8 years now.

I'm hoping that by doing most of the marbling, applying an iridescent blue, then another marbling, and a lighter shade of blue, that it will show the depth that I'm after. It looked good indoors, but it was dark by the time I was done so I couldn't see what it looked like in sunlight.

DEPTH is the key word here! It's going to look awesome under varied lighting and angles... great work

That's cool! An old 10/22, a perfect project gun, looks like it takes a lot of time and patients for a project like this, especially the plastic wrap part. Nicely done, look forward to pics of the completed gun.

Great work. Just be careful with your wet sanding and buffing. If you cut thru the clear you may have to start all over. Remember, the edges and corners will be thin so stay away from them. Before you cut thru you can always shoot more clear on it and wetsand again.

I was going to say something about being out in the sun. Would be nice to see that outside with the sun on it. Looks very nice and with 2 coats of clear on it should be pretty tough against any bumps and bruises!! Again very nice job. BANG BANG!!
