Elk and other big game animals, "will instinctively go into deep water" as it works well against wolves..Not so well with Grizzly bears...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yf6VHH15ihw

There's a lesson here; the best defense is a good offense. The elk could have gored that bear if he's been on land and didn't wait so long to go on the offensive. Once the bear got behind him it was all over. Be aggressive in your own defense!

Bear obviously saw an opportunity and took full advantage of the water limiting the elks mobility. Whether learned behavior by the bear or pure instinct predators surprisingly can take game which are physically larger. There is a video of a bobcat taking a white tail deer. Thanks for posting.
