    120 Pro Hunter

I asked Sierra if the 120 pro Hunter would be appropriate for the Grendel and got this response.

Has this been your experience (for those of you who have used the 120 PH)?

I have not shot any deer with the 120 Pro Hunter out of my Grendel yet but I have shot lots of deer with it out of a 6.5x55 out between 300 to 500 yards where it has slowed down to the velocities that a Grendel would be running between point blank and 300 yards and it performed great. I have a load with it worked up and did use it while hunting but did not see a deer when using it this year. Bullet is running 2550 out of 18" barrel. I did shoot a deer with the 120 Speer Gold Dot doing 2550 out of my 20" barrel and it performed AWESOMELY.

Somebody is lying to you. How is Sierra "Pro-Hunter" brand not a hunting bullet? Not advertised as a hunting bullet? Bull-baloney.

The Spitzer shape of this 120 grain #1720 bullet assures excellent downrange performance and precise accuracy. This bullet will perform well at longer ranges on medium game from the 264 Winchester Magnum and the 6.5x284 cartridges, but it will be too fragile for close-range shots. It is an excellent all-around bullet for smaller capacity 6.5mm cartridges.

While this bullet is generally considered too "hard" for handgun hunting situations, the 120 grain #1720 bullet would be a good choice for medium game at short ranges. It is best used in 6.5mm cartridge cases with powder capacity equal to the 223 Remington or larger and loaded to maximum velocities. This 120 grain bullet gives the handgunner target accuracy suitable for all target applications, including full-size handgun silhouettes.
Interesting that they would not test a hunting bullet for expansion. Hmmmmm.

I get the feeling that Sierra feels that, a hunting bullet has to be going at least 2800 fps to worth a BC above 360. I was told the 107 tmk was as close to a high BC hunting bullet as they would get.

What they were saying was the Pro Hunter was too tough at Grendel velocities. The "not advertised" as a hunting bullet was the 107 TMK.

120 pro hunters do a great job on hogs when placed near the ear. Haven't hit anywhere else YET
                  Haven't shot a deer yet.

For what it's worth, just shot a medium(150, 175 # ish) sow, quartering away about 90 yard just behind right shoulder, no exit and she dropped where she had been standing, very little twitching. Guess it's called DRT..

By the by, seems Sierra recently shipped some of these again. Just about every supplier I had notifications left with, have them in stock again.
So far Midway is least expensive and free shipping over $50.00.

They work fine out of my Grendel for deer , daughter has also shot a bunch of them with her 260 running between 2500-2600 fps. Never had a problem with them killing deer.

Thank you for the post. Good information.

(I wish Speer would get back to me about my questions on the 120 gold dots!!)

I have been waiting for this to become avalible again. I also used some years ago in my 6.5x55 and my 6.5/06. I was able to get four boxes but haven’t done anything with them as yet.
I wasnt conserned with there performance in the Grendel, I remmeber that they held up to 3000+ from my 6.5/06. I want a bullet thet will hold together and still wxpand some, leaving me two holes to leak.
