I'd like to try a carbon fiber handgaurd on my current 14.5" build-in-process. Thoughts, recommendation and/or experience with them? Looking for a 12" with around $150 budgeted for the handguard.
I would check Joe Bob's to see if they still carry AP Customs carbon fiber handguards. AP makes several sizes, Carbine length about $123.00. When I needed one they were not is stock and I had to search the net for one.
I was not impressed with the mounting setup of the AP Customs hand guard, but it was a feather compared to everything else I've owned. With that said they have re-designed it. It might be worth another look.
The improved version is currently shipping from Brownell's, and it has twice the amount of fasteners mounting the tube to the nut. It also has an aluminum cap on the front. It's a great handguard, and is still extremely light at 7.6oz. with the nut. Before, you had to use a standard GI barrel nut. This one is better, with flats, so no special wrenches needed.

Yeah I just installed a Gen 2, it's much more improved. I really like the AP customs handguards, they really made it better with the changes.
I only wish they announced the changes before shipping them. I received mine and ended up returning it because it I thought they sent me their 308 version by mistake.
