  • Sourcing a 14.5" Barrel

Hi guys, I've been thinking about a starting a pinned 14.5" Grendel build. I see that you can now buy 16" barrels off the shelf from many places now, but looks like no one offers 14.5" yet.

Do you guys know which barrel makers ideal for ordering single barrels from? Lilja seems open to new profiles and and short barrels - as long as you order 5 or 20 of them. Also is it typical to request short barrels to be sent straight to third parties like ADCO for a pin job?

BHW also looks interesting since you can specify twist rate, finish, fluting (not needed), bolt type, and have a good selection of lengths and profiles even from the standard selection.

Hmm, looks tempting, I probably would have purchased that 2 weeks ago. I don't want to sound like a special snowflake, but I've recently been reading up on all kinds of drama about the "Grendel II" spec and how it's more than just tweaking throat diameter like .264lbc or 6.5CSS.
Also the 9/16-24 thread, it will be tricky to fit most 5/8-24 brakes on.
I don't mind paying a bit more to have a new barrel made, as long as it doesn't break the bank. Thanks for the heads up.

In this particular case, the "II" designation is simply the bolt type, meaning it's headspaced for the typical Grendel recessed bolt face.

That barrel is old stock, and should have a true Grendel chamber. The 9/16-24 threads are common on Grendel barrels.

Just wanted to share the link. If it's not what you want, I certainly understand. Maybe others will offer additional help.

Interesting to know. I thought type I, type II terminology was unique to BHW chambers. I guess Sabre Defense did predate the Satern Grendel II incident.
I'm not sure if I should even buy that barrel unless I have decided to send it out for pinning immediately. ATF and constructive possession (I do have many spare lowers stowed away for a rainy day).

I think it applied to BHW bolt types, and RXA simply borrowed the terminology.

I just bought one of the ones from Redxarms, it had lots of "shelf" wear, and the engravings for the barrel caliber, twist rate, and the other markings look to have been done by hand or a worn out machine. I suspect these barrels were made in limited numbers. It does'nt bother me as I was going to have it Cerakoted or something similar.

I was told the 9/16 x 24 brake or flash hider should fit, but mine does not. They said its because of the finish, I will probably run a die over it, I've never had this problem before.

Are you sure it's 1/2"x28? That doesn't leave much meat for a .264 bore.

I think you may be getting it mixed up with the 14.5" 5.56 barrels they are selling.

Nice to hear it went well for you. Which muzzle device did you select?

Good news, BHW got back to me and told me they can make barrels of more lengths than listed on their site. You can also modify the order in the comments section for other lengths and profiles.
Randi says that they are waiting for the new website to be ready.

I placed my order with them just now. Is it me, or BHW prices just seem too good to be true?

They are good barrels and the guy who has mine has killed many deer with it. I did not like it because of the weight so I coughed up the money for a Lilja when they became available. They are .264 LBC chambers, not Grendel, but unless that bothers you I don't think they are any more costly, or cheaper than similar barrels.
