If the gun were to catastrophically fail then perhaps more debris might come out the ejection port than the other side. More spit comes out the ejection port when shooting suppressed. That suggests chamber over-pressure will take the path of least resistance into the face.
If however you are loading safely then the chances of catastrophic failure is remote. Chipped bolt lugs will happen when the bolt is in battery so it's not coming out until the pressure drops. Plenty of situations where you might need PPE to operate, but not always in long gun shooting.
