Anti seize on barrel nut or not.

According to The complete AR assembly guide vol 2. They recommend to put anti seize on the barrel nut. I've seen you tubes that also recomnd it.. and forum post against it. Is this an outdated technique?

What do you do and why or why not?

You absolutely have to lubricate the barrel nut. Aeroshell 33MS is the milspec grease. A lot of people use copper based antiseize because it has similar properties but it is not technically correct. If you don't use a lubricant you will not reach the correct torque spec and will likely gaul the threads. It is also highly recommended to burnish/stretch the threads by going through multiple torque/relief cycles (tighten, loosen, tighten).

I always use it for the reasons centerfire mentioned. Copper antiseize. Did not know there was a special grease, just used what I had lol.

The torque value is different for a lubricated nut vs. a dry nut. Anti seize coumpounds are not the same as some use graphite and are not friendly to Stainless. The best recommendation to follow is what the Manufacturer recommends. If there are no instructions I would go with a dry nut and the torque and loosen 3 times, then torque to the recommended torque.

The correct MilSpec grease uses Molybdenum Disulfide because the graphite in Copper based antiseize causes electrolysis in Aluminum.

The barrel nut installation process changed with the M4 after seeing some weird issues with M4 nuts coming loose that had not been typically seen with the M16 series.

There was one particular M4 in Swamp Phase of Ranger School that suffered from saltwater corrosion over time, and the barrel, handguards, etc. literally fell off.

You'd think a barrel manufacturer wouldn't produce a video demonstrating an incorrect way to install a barrel yet there it is in living color.

That makes sense, I know the old aluminum house wiring had issues when hooked to copper. Over time it might be an issue, but I've had several apart and never saw any type of corrosion. I think if it was bare aluminum it could be much more of an issue.

I use Castrol LMM grease. It's moly-based so it's dark grey/black.
