    AR Straight Pull Bolt

I figured this is probably the right forum...

A couple years ago when the Democrats took control of the Michigan government, I figured they'd try to pass their so-called assault weapons ban. The bill they proposed (which failed, thank God) would have required registration of privately owned "assault rifles" with no ability to transfer (even to heirs) and there were discussions of "Buy outs". Since I like the AR platform and I'd rather keep mine, I decided to build a 6.5G straight pull bolt action upper to try. I used a 16" Monster barrel in a slick side upper, installed an adjustable gas block (cranked closed) and left off the gas tube. I put a couple hundred rounds through it and ended up really liking it. Accurate, easy to shoot, and no lost brass. A stroke of the charging handle (ambi. because I'm left-handed) and the next round is ready to go.

When the Right took back the State House this fall, I decided to convert it to semi-auto. When I removed the gas block, I found that the gas port had filled with jacket material along with a little carbon. It took a while hand twisting a 1/16" drill bit in the port to clean it out but it turned out fine. After the port was clean, reassembly with a gas tube was quick. It works great as a semi-auto too.

It may be a good option for those who live in the 8 "less-than-free" states.

Has anyone else made a SP AR? Just kind of wondering.

I tried the kali key once, then put it in the drawer b/c it has no lateral rotation to the eject phase, so pulling that big honkin chargin handle was really tough... took the enjoyment out of it.
One of the guys on here lives in PA and did something like yours, since they can't hunt with an "AR."
m796rider has one of those new BC-15 bolt action uppers he swapped out the barrel to Grendel (another thread). I'm thinking of trying that.

Edit to add: Claudia Tenney (R-NY) introduced the "SAGA" law, Second Amendment Great Again, it says any rifle allowed by federal law is automatically allowed in any state. Federal pre-empts state or local. Get your congressmen/women to back the bill.

I just used a standard ambidextrous charging handle and a regular gas key. I never had a problem with extraction. I'm sure pulling on one side only put some side loading on the charging handle but the wear marks were fairly even. Tte scope made finger forking the handle difficult. All the "special stuff" to make a SP bolt AR seems unnecessary to me.

Heh Heh! California would secede if that Bill gets signed into law.

Nonetheless, the advice is excellent for the folks in states whose representatives have even a trace of open mindedness and respect for the Constitution.

And I'll bet few, if any, other states would oppose the secession!

Naw... just relegate them back to a territory, appoint a territorial governor, or even just a part of it as territory... Americans who want to stay in a state can move over to free portions of Calif. Wouldn't take long before - let's see - SF and LA territories, would agree since they could easily be put under a martial law.
It's a shame b/c back in the day I lived out there, early days of the Navy, and it was a great place to be. Now pretty much ruined by marxist policies.

Edit to add: democrats would freak b/c Calif under that setup would be a red state!
