    A Shot at Redemption

I had been responding to the “end of my rope” thread. It’s time to start my own.

I have been tinkering with a couple uppers that just haven’t been performing. This morning I took one of them apart. While it was apart, I cleaned everything. I used JB Paste until patches came out white. The barrel is a really heavy 24” Lilja. I reassembled the barrel into an older Alexander Arms side charging upper. These uppers are tremendously oversized and difficult to mate with a handguard if you want anti-rotation. The upper to barrel fit was so tight that it took time and a rubber mallet to get them together.

I keep what my gf calls a “scrapbook” with my ladder test data and sample groups. I found a load that had previously worked well. I loaded 50 of those. After work, I headed for the range in a race against dusk.

I got velocities for 20 of the 30 rounds using my Andiscan. The load was a 123 ELD and 27.7 AR Comp. The average velocity was 2,500 fps with an SD of 6.1 for the 20 shot string.

The groups weren’t tight yet and the zero was shifting, but things are much improved vs groups from the prior few days. I was rushing to get done before dusk. In my haste, I was shooting through mirage by the end. I also realized the muzzle brake/suppressor was loosening.

There’s still a lot to clean up, but the barrel seating is clearly critical. What I learned today should help me to properly evaluate the Odin Works barrel. Thanks to everybody for the helpful suggestions. I’ll add to the thread as I get more data.

As suggested by LRRPF52, it looks like I needed a tighter receiver to barrel extension fit.

I was able to head back to the range for 20 more rounds. The rifle is finally shooting groups again like I want with consistency.

I started at the top working down and right to left. The last group is pretty close.

Next, I need to confirm my zero and zero out my turrets. I also want to box test this scope. I’m not 100% on it yet. It seems like there is always more to do.

I tested 2 of those barrels from the Lilja group buy we did in 2014, and those are the types of groups they shot. I could rapid-fire bug holes with them. I built them up with Seekins billet receiver sets, Magpul PRS stocks, Seekins handguards, Geissele triggers, bedded barrels, de-edge, blended and polished feed ramps, and those barrels flat-out shoot.

I still have one of them, but sadly, because I’m so obsessed with short barrel performance, I haven’t shot it in probably 9 years.

These are rapid-fired 5rd groups on a cadence:

          Subtract .264” from the last 2 groups. When I say rapid-fired, I mean: BANG one-thousand BANG one-thousand BANG one-thousand BANG one-thousand BANG.

The only better barrel I’ve seen so far was a 20” Bartlein from Precision Firearms shooting 120gr Lapua Scenar-L loaded by PF in Lapua brass, a factory load.

I started losing count of how many rounds kept going through the same hole.

I tried the same load substituting a 120 ELD. After zeroing at 100, I fired a group at 550 on steel. I was very pleasantly surprised with the results.

That’s one of the coolest things I realized with Grendel that I haven’t seen with other cartridges/rifles.

Being able to just stack rounds on each other on the head of an IPSC at 500-600yds, while self-spotting as if it was a game, and actually being able to hear the impacts loudly.

It’s a very nice balance of low recoil, energy on-target, precision, semi-auto quick succession of firing, and being able to watch it through the scope.
