  • "Match Grade" barrel on my upper....

Y'all got me thinking....got my upper from midway USA.... The description says Match grade barrel....reckon it's a shaw? Shilen? I am not with the rifle until Friday now I am wondering. I paid 920 for it, the AA site says 780 for the base model overwatch....there is something going on, I just don't know what...will be looking extra had for the "S" stamp tomorrow behind the gas block...if I can see it

I would call AA since they would have supplied MidwayUSA with the upper.

If it is a Shaw, then $920 is too much (imho)...if it is a Shilen, then the price is right.

      Outsider:

It is a Shaw. I do not know of AA ever making an Overwatch that used any other manufacture of barrel.

The term "Match" when applied to barrels means nothing. If any AA upper had a real Match Grade barrel, you better believe the name of the barrel maker would be part of the advertisement.

I had an Overwatch and believe it cost about the same and that was four or more years ago so the price hasn't gone up that much.

AA's website lists the 24" Overwatch upper at $780 for the standard barrel (ER Shaw) with a $220 option for the Shilen barrel (which has always been an available option).

Note: AA does not advertise their $780 upper as a "Match" grade barrel...only the Shilen option is listed as "match" grade.

For 24" options, there appears to be 4 barrels on the Grendel site: two in the Overwatch upper (Shaw and Shilen) and two offered as a barrel and bolt set (made by AA). Correct?

              There are many 24" options:

              1. Overwatch x 2 (Standard and Shilen)
              2. Advanced Weapons System x 2 (Standard and Shilen)
              3. GDMR (cut rifled)
              4. GSR (cut rifled)
              5. 24" Lightweight Upper (Standard button rifled)
              6. Barrel kits x 2 (Lightweight and Heavyweight; button rifled)

Outsider, I doubt you will be disappointed with the Shaw barrel. I had one and it shot extremely tight groupings (when I was shooting good). Just consider it a premium for getting the upper now instead of waiting like everyone else.

It's totally fine with me, I am in te "test phase" with this round...if it turns out good for me, I will invest in a more high quality barrel eventually.

Outsider Check on posts by Hoot. He has a 24" Shaw and has remarkable accuracy with his.

I got my 24" Overwatch from JSE Surplus and this was done last weekend:

A dime can cover that group @ 100 yds.

Not wanting to make excuses, but this was after 80 rounds down the tube, on a worn out $20 bipod...and a Guinness hangover from the night before..
