Why? Shoot it, shoot it, shoot it. Clean the powder residue, and shoot it some more!
A total waste of time to do that cleaning regimen thing. Not ONE person can prove it does anything but wear the barrel out from the cleaning rod rubbing in the wrong places. Lots of people who I respect and who shoot on the National and International scene are convinced the whole cleaning thing is simply a ploy by the barrel makers to make you wear out the barrel faster!
Not needed, not necessary. Clean it from the factory to make sure there is no machining or assembly gunk left, then shoot it, shoot it, shoot it!

Check these threads:
i've been reading about a lot of procedure and a few smiths that don't believe in it. what's your opinion? what has worked best for you? also, which bore guide do you use? i was looking at the Delrin sold on saterns website. what bore cleaner? i've used this on my previous guns http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumb
Just want to get some more opinions. I am new to a lot of things here. I have my first Grendel in a 24" SS bull barell, which is also my first stainless and first bull barrel. Currently it has 3 rounds fired and has been cleaned once. You can prob see where this is going... Opinions on "barrel break in"? It's
"It is the consensus of the High Power National Match competitors that barrel break in is a bunch of huey invented by the barrel makers to allow them to blame bad performing barrels on the shooter not following their documented break in process. This is from shooters who routinely burn up a barrel every year, and do it year after year. I've personally gone through three barrels now on my personal competition rifle. The first one I followed the normal drawn out process of shooting one shot and cleaning shooting five shots and cleaning and so on. On my last two I just shot them to get a good zero, perhaps 20 shots and cleaned and then cleaned after every match or practice session there after, normally 88 shots with 40 of them fired rapid fire. I can tell no difference in accuracy or ease of cleaning. All three of these barrels shot .5 MOA from day one through their life of 3,000-5,000 rounds.

I went 700+ rounds once between sticking cleaning rods down my Grendel throat, and I regularly go 500 rounds. I don't do anything until the accuracy starts to drop off, and thats usually around 500 rounds.
Shoot more, clean less!
LRRPF52 told me at Boomershoot that he's done enough cleaning for a lifetime, and he only cleans if absolutely necessary. I think along the same lines now, and I'm a guy who washes my hands about 150 times a day. (I'm in Medicine and see patients all day long!)
I used to clean everything after every range trip....no more!

I used to clean after every outing, I have since stopped that to some extend. I dont scrub the inside of my barrel because that wire brush can do damage. I run it thru there twice then use the cloth and then a very light amount of oil. Now this may be right or wrong but when I look down my barrels with a light they look clean and that makes me feel good about it.
